I know you can swap a AC Delco Alt. on a RRC 3.5 but what about a 96 Disco 4.0L? Mine is starting to make sounds and I want to fix it before it stops in a shower of sparks.

Thanks

Justin

Is 96 serp or v belt?

doubt it, you might be able to find something that will work. or just go the Mean Green/PPW route.

Thats what I was afraid of.

I'll check out the Mean Green route too.

Thanks

I was thinking about converting to a domestic alt, but after crunching the numbers and comparing them do the returns seen I figure it is a toss up between putting in a Delco and just dropping the bucks on a PPW alt... I will probably go the PPW route when my 85A explodes (sounds like it's going to any day now-- imagine the sound of putting pieces of glass in a blender, thats what the bearings sound like)

search for volvo alternator.

There is room for a serp belt on a volvo 240 alternator, and it's 120 amp. You just need to finagle a busing for the mount.

Why don't you get it rebuilt? That's probably the cheapest route.

We've had them redone in Portland at about $125.

Now there is a hell of an idea.

I'll search a place out here in SB.

Thanks!

Make sure it's a reputable shop that will actually replace components. I had one rebuilt by a "good" local shop that charged $100, and a year later is was making all kinds of racket. Conveiniently right out of warranty.

It'll just crap out again in a few years.

IMO, save up a few bucks and go with the PPW 160A unit with the external voltage regulator. After having a string of problems with the original Marelli units in the Disco, I bought a PPW unit 6 years ago and it's been howling away ever since !

Everybody will ask you if you have a supercharger ;)

Well Put. Plus the rover alts. have different internals and usually cost a little more to rebuild. I had one rebuilt locally and 2 weeks later it died. He re-rebuilt it and again it died in a few weeks. Finally gave up and put in a 130A Mustang Alternator in my truck. It lasted about 2 years and went out on me, only this time it had a lifetime warranty and I got it replaced for free courtesy of Pep Boys.

I just bought a new 200 amp last week from:

http://www.mechman.com

Pricey, but local (for me) and I think it's my last alternator for the Rover. Uses a Ford case but has rover adapter bracket and plug.

$534 Dollars is more than a bit pricey

i replaced my marelli a few months ago with a rebuilt marelli, and now this one is starting to whine. i know its a crap shoot with rebuilts, it came with a 1yr warranty but i know that warranty won't be worth a shit in the middle of the woods so i'm thinking of just sucking it up and buying a new one. what is a PPW and where can i get one?

What AC Delco Alternator can be used in the 3.5 V belt engines? Is it a drop in? Does anyone have a part number. Thanks.

Late seventies, early eighties Chevy pick-up alternator will work with the v-belt engines. Get one with the optional "R" terminal so you have a place to connect the tach feed. Close to a drop-in with a little fiddling with some threaded rod and flat bar.
