my warn hubs on stock fj40 axle (1970) have no cone washers and get loose after rock crawling for a while. Do I need some different hubs with cone washers or just keep torque them down? Anyone got a set of hubs that use cones???

Locking tabs! They fold one way over a bolt head flat, and the other way over the side of the hub. I think they come in warn rebuild kits you can get ot oreillys for about $10, but check with them on that...Otherwise, locktite blue...

Warn hubs suck. The ydo get loose even with the tabs. Ditch the drum stuff go with a mini disk conversion. You get the hubs and disk brakes too. :D

Damn straight. I've seen so many of those things grenade, it's like they're Birfield fuses.

Better yet get the Aisins, and send the Warns to me.

I would MUCH rather change out a grenaded hub than a grenaded birfield ANY DAY.

How about using longfields and Aisin hubs? I would hate to be climbing some very steep sh!t and have hub break on me. Do the disk brake conversion and get some Aisin. Another thing I HATE about the warns is the allen screws. what a PITA!

well, upgrade to longs and aisins, then your next weak point is the inner axles... Those are even more of a PITA than Birfields are.

On the CM2004 pre run, a J**per broke his rear axle (why he was runninig PSM with a Dana30 and 35's I will never know) and we stopped and helped him fish the broken piece out of his rear diff....MAN what a pain.

I'd still rather my weakest point be the cheapest, and easiest to replace part, in this case, it's the locking hub.

The point is that you can do a lot more shit with longs and aisins without breaking. So yeah with Warns, you may never change a birf or inner axle but you are changing Warns all day long while your buddy with longs/aisins doesn't break all day. The idea isn't to have something easy to change when you break but to not break.

I broke 3 warn hubs before i undestood that they are piece of shit and switched to solid hubs. Nowadays i have longfields + aisin locking hubs from hilux. I never heard that anyone broke those from hilux/HJ6x or newer BJ's... My friends got dozens of broken birfs and other stuff but not a single hub (except my warns ofcourse).

People do break aisins. It seems from my crappy memory that the studs and dowels are what break, and not necessarily the hub, but I've not been there yet personally. Woody did that recently...???
