Any of you guys run dusty trails without the windshield? What kind of eye protection do you use? I was thinking clear ski goggles or?

Mark has no windshield in his Runner. He has been wearing motocross goggles and a dusk mask.
I think when I tube out the Runner, I will not have a windshield either. No glass seems like a good thing. Except for the dust factor. It means you always need to be the leader.
Thinking about alittle more wheeling this Saturday. See the Toy board.

I'd be there but I am leading a run for the AZ Rough Riders on Saturday. I'd really like to try lightenning up my rig even more and the windshield is pretty heavy, that and I could try harder stuff without worrying about breaking the windshield (not that it has stopped me before).

When I drop my windshield I use a set of close fitting safety glasses from work. You can get them in clear, or yellow for night and dark tint for the desert southwest sun. Some of them look pretty good to. Just get a set that fits right into the face. They are cooler (temp) than a set of ski goggles.

I wear Spy goggles, much better than ski goggles(cooler), Spy makes ski goggles but there mostly known for their supercross stuff. My wife works there so that helps.....:smokin: www.spyoptic.com/ (http://www.spyoptic.com/) :smokin:

i have been running with out a windsheild for about 9 months. it is great on the trail, he dust can be a pain some times. but it truly sucks on the road, this year in colorado a froze my ass off. i will be making a plexi glass wind sheild that just pops in nice and quick but will fit in the back. texas doesn't require a windsheild and my is tagged and inspected with out one. but i would carry one if you do any stret driving. mike

If you are worried about weight, have you thought about acrylic (Plexiglas) or polycarbonate (Lexan). Eventually it'd get scratched up, but till then you have the dust protection of a windshield. Tim Hardy apparently did this in the "Ultimate Adventure"

Weight, and I'd rather roll onto the cage than the windshield frame. We are getting ready to run some hard trails in the next month or so, body damage is supposed to be mandatory on some of them, we'll see. Not concerned about onroad, I got the best mod you can get for a ZUk..... a trailer :p

I would love to chop mine off also, but I am a little hesitant to do so up here in washington cause I heard it rains every once in a while and I don' t want to mess up my hair:smokin: But, who knows maybe I will just say fuck it and get out the sawzall. WOuld you be chopping out the windshield frame too?

Sawzall? Uh, my windshield was bolted on. Different story if you have a hardtop..... you'll need the sawzall then.;)

Theres stuff called "Speedglass" that was featured in Petersons a few months back, light as lexan but guaranteed NEVER to scratch.
I have run with no windshield on the trail & street with no problems other that cops dont dig it. On the trail I thought it was better, the majority of the dust goes past you, where with the windshield it seemed to suck everything in and swirl around your face forever.

Softop. I just undo a couple bolts. Trust me, the glass will be back on by summer so I can use my A/C.... I just need to trailer it to the trailhead, ride for 20 minutes (most of the time I am leading runs anyway). Then nice and slow trailride. Without all those pillars I would think visibility would be better too.

mine folds down.:D but i think when I'm going to be really getting it I'll just pull it off. maybe rig some quick disconects like the removable toy door trick.

Chris

do what I did, get a pair of "Scott" dirt bike racing goggles from Southwest....get them to match your paint, like I did....

also if ya tell them your picking them up for me..they'll give ya a discount...like Rick got on his winches...lol

your lucky..you lead most trail rides..if you were in the back like I am...you'll need a big hankie.....you will look like a Bandit..but ya won't get those nasty AZ trail booger's.....lol

I run without a windshield, it's not so bad. I wear Scott goggles, the saftey glasses just don't do it. :)

Last run we did, I drove about 30 miles on the Highway with no glass. It alright untill that night, the temp drops a little at night. It reminded me of Dumb and Dumber when they were on the mini bike.:rasta:

I was thinking of running a plexiglass windshield.
I have had my hood fly up 2 x in the last few months . (Dont ask)
I have a a few Qs.
Does the windshield flex in the wind? how do you seal it up?
Anything else you can think of to help me out.

I thought of some of the same questions. However I thought I would put the plexi/lexan inside the front hoop so that it doesn't get in the way when I'm driving on my side. If I do that I could put some little tabs in the conners and maybe one in the center of the top and bottom of the front hoop as well. You could even use some of those handy Zues fasteners to hold it to your tabs so that its a kind of quick release. As far as sealing it, I think it work well enough as a wind break for me, but for the most part I might even keep it off for the Summers. The cold air in your face at 60mph for long periods of time is intense...:)
