So put a line lock on it and get a spare..

Now that the line lock is a viable option I would do that.

Cheap and very easy to instal

Hey Cruzilla...

thanks for initiating the thread and for registering!

Actually, I had not started one because I did not want to detract from GSMTR and Cruise Moab... but yes, we certainly needed one.

If you are planning on going on any of the Thursday morning runs, get your registration in! They are always the first to fill up and that is certainly the case this year. Still plenty of room but if you want to be absolutely sure, send it in now.

TLCA has relaxed the Line Lock issue and put these decisions where they need to be, at the event level! If anyone has questions about whether or not their rig will pass tech, please send them directly to me. However, I will note that registration and insurance is required on this trek because the rubicon trail is technically a CA road and all CA laws apply (registration, no drinking, etc). Will Safety check ask for it... don't know, don't care. but let it be known they are required and you are expected to have them.

If anyone would like to volunteer Raffle donations, please contact me directly at Rubithon@tlca.org or tonytwiddy@yahoo.com

We are hoping to have two winches this year, one for the general raffle and one for registered drivers only. Also, volunteers who work in the kitchen will receive a one-of-a-kind limited Rubithon Kitchen T-shirt per Terry. Mr. Ross Woody will be our primary chef again and if you've had the pleasure of his BBQ, you know what I'm talking about... most excellent!

one other very important point, when on your way to Rubithon and you swing into Ice House Resort, SLOW DOWN! I caught a lot of grief from folks flying in there like there was no tomorrow.

Look forward to seeing everyone there, drop me a note for questions and raffle donations.
Registration at www.rubithon.com or in Toyota Trails.
Join TLCA at www.tlca.org (all Rubithon attendees must be TLCA Members).

Thanks!

It is my big trip of the year. It appears my registration made it as I had a question and it was answered in an email this morning.

I'm very excited and anxious and nervous. Wheeling a big whale of a Cruiser that has to get me to the Rubicon Trail and through it and back adds to my anxiety. Oh well, You only live once. And I can prepare my rig the best I can and hope for the best.

If I don't bump into you all at Cruise Moab in the short time I'm there, I will definitely see you at Rubithon.

Tony you can volunteer me for something but I'm not a good cook. I'll bring something to the raffle.

Thursday morning run :)

This will be our first trip to the Rubithon, and can hardly wait to go. I wanted to go this year, since Tom is joining the U.S. Army (Airborne Rangers), and is scheduled to leave in September.:usa:

You should be fine, it is a cruiser after all. Seriously, open diffs and 33's or 35's can run the Rubicon just fine. Wheelin with a group of Cruisers on the Con is an experience that should not be passed up if possible. All of the runs except night and double locker are possible for stock rigs.

sorry about the dates, thougth we had corrected that (another good sign of a well organized run... NOT). ;)

June 16 to 20... runs departing Wed, Thursday and Friday.

Goldenarrow... Rubithon is a great opportunity to run this trail, especially if it's your first time. While it is a very tough trail (hey, it's the rubicon), there are always plenty of folks to lend a hand. The first time I ran it (Rubithon 97), I just fell in behind a very well equiped cruiser and tried not to be too much of a nuisance.

VooDoo... OK, you had me going to half a second... don't do that!

thanks generic and BKcruiser.

Hello cruiser heads!
Last year we took a stock fj80 all the way through with only a small dent in the passenger side rear panal. It did just fine! However, take all the running boards, bumper ends, and other bolt on plastic dodads off.
Stock fj40s run the Con every year with no major problems! Don't be bothered about your rig being up to the task. We get all ranges of rigs and drivers showing up. This will be our fourth year running the 11 Thursday run. We have not yet had a major breakage on our run! Knock on wood. As usual we get a lot of minor breaks, but nothing that cannot be fixed.
Tony is right, the Rubicon is a non-maintained County road. Insurance and registration are required, although we have never asked to see them. BUT one thing we do not allow at all is DRINKING IN THE RIGS!!! If you want to drink and drive on the Rubicon, DON'T SHOW UP FOR THE THURSDAY 11 RUN! We have ZERO tolerance for that crap! One other item that is frowned on, is a bad attitude. Come to have a good time and fun! We always have a blast, with lots of good memories. Like having the weather dump on us big time on top of Walker Ridge! Remember too, that at that time of the year the blood suckers will be out in mass, so bring lots of repellant and maybe head screens. The trail will be wet and muddy, so a good pair of boots is an asset.
It is good to see so many of you showing up for the Thursday run. See you there!

Cardinal Fang, Thursday 11 am Trail leader.

Rockzar

mailed off the reg this am. Hopeing to get into the Thursday am run, camping at Spider. Cant wait!

TRT2
04-15-2004, 09:59 AM
Again, most excellent advice and input from Cardinal Fang!

Yes, expect mosquitos. Last year when we postponed, there were no mosquitos which was a nice change of pace... but it did unload via thunder storms. Caught us off guard in August with shorts and bikini tops. But it is the Sierra, be prepared for darn near anything.

The entire Rubithon Team will not tolerate any drinking on the trail. I don't even feel like we need to discuss it... that is simply the way it is, and it will not be tolerated. Also, TLCA will probably be escorting the forest service rangers at various times. Save it for the camp and campfire. You can do it.

I also want to commend our Trail leaders. These folks go the extra distance to ensure everyone has a Safe, fun time. I literally get registrations asking to be assigned by Trail leader, simply because they did such an outstanding job the year prior. I am very fortunate to have such quality folks involved.

Attitude certainly is important. Unlike many TLCA events where you base camp and do day trips, on this trek, you'll leave point A, camp along the trail, wheel some more into the springs, camp some more, then exit to point B. You'll be carrying everything you need with you and unpacking, packing it up a time or two. Also, the Rubicon Trail is traveled by many enthusiasts and while TLCA has secured the Rubicon Springs Resort, the rest of the trail is open. I am asking for support from the OHV community by choosing other destinations for that weekend... but we will be sharing the trail with others, and when on the trail, we're all out there for one reason, to have fun.

Thanks!

(snipped from PMC April fools newsletter)

Rubithon 2004 – March 16th to 20st

Rubithon has come and gone! ‘It was an awesome event’ was the review given by event chair Tony Twiddy. When asked what happened to the original dates of June 16 thru the 20th, Tony Twiddy was heard to note that its just too damn crowded with all those Toyota’s at that time and he surprised everyone by advancing it to March and moving it to Texas. ‘Texas is a damn fine place to drive a cruiser’ he stated. When asked about refunds, he replied ‘No comment, No refund, and No Bull’

.... OK, OK, it was just a joke! Relax. Rubithon is still in June!

Rubithon confirmations will be going out approx May 7th to 10th.

Yes, I've just returned from Cruise Moab and will inputting the many registrations received while I was away. After I get this batch in, we'll be sending confirmations.

At this time, those who registered early have their run preference.
However, we are also combining the Friday runs into one group so if you registered for Friday at 9 AM, you've probably already been contacted or will soon be contacted, about the small time change.... 7 AM Friday group.

if you have not yet registered and want the Thursday breakfast run, you might be outta luck. It has filled the fasted by far and I am sure that after this week, will either be closed or extremely close to being full. Be sure to indicate your second run preference if just now submitting.

Now I have to say... the TLCA events this year are phenomenal as far as fun and participation! If you are thinking about going to any but not sure, I am here to encourage you to go. The positive attitude towards TLCA has spilled over into the events and they are the best ever!

Also, if anyone registered is riding solo and 'might' entertain the idea of sharing their passenger seat with someone they do not know, let me know as I have folks who are interested in a ride.

thanks!

I think you're correct Jim...

this is going to be an awesome Rubithon!

Thanks to Jason Keene of JK customs, we have a complete FJ40 front bumper with hoop and new Warn 8274-50 as a grand prize for Registered participants. That's right, to get a single ticket on this prize, you must register. We also have a Warn M8 winch for everyone else in the raffle.

Georg Esterer and Gary (Mudrak) Kardum have teamed up to provide a completely rebuild 3 spd transfer case!!

We have an on board Elect air compressor from Extreme Outback and another set of custom made Alcan Springs. Other vendors such as Marlin Crawler, Rock Buggy supply, Longfield, High Angel Drive line, Cruiser Outfitters, Energy Suspension, Budbuilt, Bushwhacker Hella, CV Unlimited, Cramer-Decker, Hi Lift, A.O.R., Metal Tech, Roundeyes.com and Fault Line Fabrication have either provided or committed to providing raffle prizes in support of our event.

Garie Chavez is attempting to assemble shirts with various advertisers on the back in which each attendee will receive free just for attending.

Last year we had Rubithon license plate frames, this year we have caribeaner key chains with TLCA Rubithon engraved on them provided by Performance Promotions and PMC!

Individuals such as John Evans, Roger Brown and Eric Hassett to name a few, are also providing raffle prizes directly out of their pocket in support of the event.

And even the famous Mike Trathen (prior Rubithon chairman) will be there!

Roger Theurer and friends are transporting their trucks from Tennessee!

Our truck count is currently at 70 and confirmations are going out this weekend. There is still room on all runs although #4 is close to filling, although we might extend the limit on that run due to its popularity.

Fridays runs (6:30 AM and 9 AM) are being combined into one run at 7 AM.

Marlin Crawlers entire shop will be coming on Friday as our special guests this year and our Mog Crew headed up by Phil Pasciak (VooDoo) will be doing trail sweep again on Friday to ensure everyone gets into the Springs by Friday night. If you break hard, they will literally drag you in behind the mog!

Harry Wagner from 4x4Wire will be providing journalistic coverage of the event and TLCA Truck Tech Roger Brown will also be attending the event.

The official event shirt is being developed and I can assure everyone it will include nearly every Toyota model present! Thanks to Peter at APLE shirts.

and of course, TLCA will be represented with our first ever 2004 Event shirts, free TLCA memberships and free access to other TLCA events as provided.

Matt Peitak will be organizing the horseshoe tournament on Saturday and Terri Henle is coordinating fantastic meals again with our own Ross Woody working his magic on the grill. If you were there last year or have had the pleasure to experience his BBQ, you know what I'm talking about!!

I am also working with Devon Johnson who created an awesome DVD of Death valley to do the same for Rubithon... this ought to be pretty cool!

so far, the only unfortunate issue is that my own wife Cindy will not be able to attend. Bummer...

Okay, if I make it to the rubithon again t will be a banzi run on thurs night to loon and then the friday morning run. Get to the springs, stay sat, and leave potentially very late on sat or VERY early on sun so I can get back to vegas easily.

a. I am not going to bring much stuff with me. Anyone's campfire that I can crash?
b. I doubt that I will have a passenger. Anyone interested??? it should be a fun ride. But I am not going to have much room for baggage.

Ray... on average, the friday 7 AM group usually hits the springs between 3 and 6 pm, depending on how long they stop for lunch.... or incur breakage.

There are also late folks coming in Friday on their own. And once our group gets in, their will be the usual folks on Friday going in to Spider and the little sluice.

There is one group of jeeps coming up big sluice on Saturday, running towards their property at Loon. This should not affect our formal groups but will catch anyone coming in late on Saturday.

3. Crushed my rear driveshaft but it held together just fine.

I do wish I knew the pair of trucks that were running the trail on that thurs, one was a beat to crap blue (I think) chevy pickup and an old powerwaggon. They got a killer pic of me that I never saw.

Also, Tony, do you happen to know who is leading the 7am run to Rubicon springs?

JasonM I'd be up for riding along or Cardinal Fang. I'd like to ride along with someone. Trail bitch, spotter, whatever you want to call it, fine for me. I've been trying to get back there for two years. Got to make the raffle again. That was my first year on the Con, driving, and I won a winch. What an awesome time! I owe Tony for the tremendous favor of giving me his spare gas so I could make it out without worries, also for the awesome upside down cake. :p

I can be at whatever side on any given day so just get back to me so I can figure out what I need to setup for going. I'll pm both of you jsut to cover my bases.

Jason... sure do: Geoff McGuire, Big Jim Adams, Mike Trathen
should be excellent group judging by the names signed up for that one.

Joey... jog my memory... did you come in with Jason and Patricia two years ago? showed up late Friday... left Sunday with the winch... I might have paraphrased your entire experience in 3 short sentences (and it was funny).

No, name wasn't Joey, you must mean last year in 03?

Close Tony. Names David Miller. Yah, Jason and Patricia met up with Steph and me in 02 after they moved to California from Oregon. We first met you on the McGrew in 01.I think it was the first run. I had the red Tacoma then. '01 Rubithon tried to run Rubithon but vehicle fell apart while on tow dolly about three hours from home. Came down anyway and found a super nice J@@p owner who brought us in from Tahoe Friday night and left Sunday-walked/rode out. Made it back to Rubithon '02 with vehicle and ran Thursday Ice House run. We camped just above you, Ross, John, Dave & crew. We had a little "experience" with some kid about parking at the springs and I was totally frustrated(fired up really cause he was talkin/yellin at the wrong guy) but later at the raffle I won the winch and it paid for the previous years carnage. I couldn't have picked a better group of guys to have been there with. Rubithon event was awesome, minus the little guy with the big tude. My FJ40 was primer grey with 37 Boggers then.

I really want to go, driving, but no money so I need to bum a ride. Steph and baby are going to hang out at my cousins house in Rescue, so I have the time just need ride. :D Somebody help a brotha out :grinpimp:

David , I would gladly offer you a ride. PM me if you want it. I think the parking experience you refer to was with us. If you mean the group that was camped right at the top of the wall across from the PMC camp then bingo. As I recall we set up camp and then someone came by and told us we were campin right where he just drove , we were campin in the road . If you guys had a mustard yellow fj40 with no front bumper and ps then you camped next to us. We thought that little perch was cool cause we could watch the traffic and talk to people as they went by. Never meant any offense and I hope you are not holding grudges. The little guy you refer to will not be there this year , he is a good cat , just a misunderstanding. I will make it up to you with a ride if you are interested . thurs . a.m. at 7:00 loon spillway

Joey
05-13-2004, 05:56 PM
I'd love the ride! The "incident" was due to where someone I was with parked and where I stopped and started unloading. I didn't have the problem, the bean eatin' big tude guy did. Could of just gone about it so differently. :shaking: No grudges. I'm only 5'11" but a big fatty(230lbs--it's really all muscle) so the guy probably wasn't all that small just lacked tact and carried a big chip on his shoulder so it made him appear smaller.

I will sure take you up on the ride if you're sure? I'm always up to meeting new people. I'll pm you my info so we can talk it out over the phone.

ya, I thought your name was David!

And yes, I summed up your experience in three sentences, ending with Rubithon is Great! (right after you won the winch). Too funny.

ya, hook up with a passenger seat and get your butt in there!

The ironic part, when I first started going to Rubithon in 97, we camped in the granite bluffs because frankly, that was the only space left as the springs were full. last year, the granite bluffs continued to be packed full of people, and the springs themselves were a ghost town!

We also hope to see you again on McGrew! Stock trucks welcomed and encouraged...

and when folks ask me about flat towing with drivelines attached, I share your story about complete and thorough grenading of the drive train.

This by far has to be one of the best trips Those Guys have been on. It is going to be a shame to miss it this year.If anyone is on the fence about going, I would recomend do it. Mod truck, stock cruiser, doesn't matter with the right attitude. This event is not what you got, it's you all got there. Everyone is equal at the springs!

Maybe I should look into airfare?

At least five will arrive for the Wednesday run, all 40's. Rob and Roger Theurer in the 6.2 diesels, Spanky in the coilover boinger, Briggs Evans and me in commonish rock idol rigs. There's room on the transporter for two more rigs, so holler at me if you'd like to join us: Nashville to Sacramento to Moab via Denver to Nashville.
Can't wait to do the 'Con, and we're heading from there to Moab on the 23-26: come join us there, too!

how funny Lizrd... I was just getting ready to post this...

We have folks flying in while their trucks arrive by transport. These folks could use a ride from the Sacramento airport to the trail head where their trucks will be patiently waiting.

While I do not yet have specific arrival times, if anyone can swing by the airport and give them a ride, that would be great!

If someone from the Sacramento area who is Not going on Rubithon but wants to help, can help shuttle them up the hill, that would be great too and I'm sure the TN folks would express their appreciation with hats and shirts, as I will do also.

More to come on this....

I am sure there will be the usual crowd Friday night at the Little Sluice and there is a Jeep club running the trail backwards on Saturday.

My personal thanks to everyone who is steering clear of the trail on Thursday and Friday morning in support of our event!

Brandon, I need the trailer towed around to Tahoe before the event, so we can hook it up behind the mog for additional hauling space. I found out last night it does have issues... no tires. oh well. I might have to take a trailer to get the trailer...

<blush> What this old thing? Oh, ok... Started life as a 63 SWB PU. abandoned on a ranch in Montana for many years then rescued by a Napa Valley wine maker's son. He had the original F rebuilt and swapped out the trans and T/C for a 4 speed set-up. He also had Butch Lewis fab the flat bed, headache rack and front bumper. That man does some nice work. The side rails and bed boards are made from old oak barrel staves from the winery. When it rains you can smell the burgundy. I can't part with them, even tho I want to build a tray back...

I bought it in 2000, with no top, no wiring, no dash controls, guages or knobs, no windows, no wipers, no interior, no brakes, no clutch, no lights, no t/s, no charging system, no linkage, (steering or t/c) rattle can paint, fair rust, ball peen body work and leaks in every lubricated system. I took it down to the frame and sheet metal and brought it back from there. I added mid seventies axles, Mudrak improved, with front and rear ARB lockers, ARB compressor, F & R disks, OME springs, shackles and pins, Rancho 9000x's, new TREs & bushings. It gets about two inches of lift from the springs and another 1" from a slight body lift. (necessary to fit T/C linkage under the cab) It has a Wilwood manual tandem master cylinder and new clutch master and slave as well as new brake, clutch and fuel lines. Ever try to find 11 mm flare nuts? Marlin rebuilt the '78 T/C with three speed gears. (Transmission needs it too. Next on list) New fenders and aprons and windows and weather strip and paint and emblems and lights. BMW 3 series leather sport seats, new headliner, floor mats, tuffy console and CB round out the interior work. And the 250 other things needed with any restoration/rebuild...

But enough about me. What do you think about me? Teach you to ask for details...

In my estimation, you'd better allow about three hours to get to the airport from Tahoma on highway 50. Figure a little over two hours if you go out the I80 side. So if you leave Tahoma at ~~9:00ish you should make it easy, with some airport time. The Springs to Tahoe won't take long, and it's light at 5:00AM now, so no problem. Can't Fawk around or break, but it's doable. See you there.

I've become denied, big blow as I've been planning on this since May 2002. My son is going in for surgery next Wednesday, we did his pre op visit today. That is the day I was supposed to be leaving Idaho for this great trail in California called the Rubicon. Pretty hard on me, he is only 17 months old and he doesn't know what is going on. He knows he hates places that have paper on the beds and people in lab coats. I feel so bad for him. So I'm staying home. My big wheeling event will be taking him to and from the surgery in the Cruiser. Which I guess I can be thankful for. I'm hoping to get out there in August as there is an 80 series group doing the Con then. But only time will tell if I make it or am denied again. I'll probably be broke by then. I'm trying to get a raffle prize sent out. I was going to bring something big, but I can't ship it. So,I'm looking to get something unique and small that I can get shipped out. So I'll be there in heart and mind :)

Stran, sounds great. Looking forward to wheelin with you guys. As long as traffic isn't too bad you should make it with an hour to spare. (hopefully)
So far our group seems to be pretty experienced, so if we get moving at 4, we might be able to make spider lake before dark.

by the way..........i've got a set of rocker gaurds that i used to run, that bolt on using the stock running board step holes. they also tie into the fender like the step does. they are available to anyone that has no protection.

every year there is at least one 40, even with mild lifts, that folds those steps into the rocker pannel. and i always think of the extras i have ........at home

a couple years ago there were two of them with big bites in m' by the time we got to the bowl......(gate keeper victims)

i will deliver them to loon lake ,i hope to be there by 8 or 9 thurs mornning. , and i'll help put them on :D

they fit 77 40 step holes.....3/8 bolts

My son should be fine. That is what they keep telling me. He has a piece of skin that needs to be removed to prevent urinary tract infections. I'm just not too wild about them knocking him out to do this. He's only like 28 lbs. It seems like it would be real easy to screw up with only 28 lbs to work with. He is seeing a specialist and we don't have a whole lot of urologists in Idaho, so getting an appointment has been a bear. We've been waiting since January to get in and this is the best they could do.

On a positive note. Gabe and I took the Cruiser out for a test drive yesterday. Our 91 has been down since Cruise Moab. We burned up a wheel bearing and a spindle on our way home from Moab. I'm not sure why this happened. I'm blaming it on the type of grease I used but that might not be the whole culprit. It now has all new knuckles, wheel bearings, a new roller bearing spindle, new seals and gaskets. Then we took the Cruiser in to get rid of the red mud from Moab. I believe our Cruiser might have some permanent pink spots. That red mud is a PITA and when you let it sit for a month it is worse.

Is anyone travelling on I84 through Idaho to the Rubithon? I'm going to send a raffle prize but shipping might not work in a timely enough manner. If not, maybe I'll have Tony make a coupon to raffle off and I'll send the prize direct to the winner. Not a bad idea because then they wouldn't have to pack it in or out.

Have fun, drive safe, and take lots of pictures!!! Maybe 2006 I'll see you there?

Tony

I will be going in on Wednesday at some time. Not sure of the exact time probably trailing all the Wednesday runs. But just thought I would let you know and everyone else know that there will be what an additional paramedic out on the trail. I will be there for the duration and will be in a yellow FJ40 towing a black trailer through. I will be followed by a purple FJ40 with an orange roll bar. Can't miss it. I just need to know what channel on my CB to monitor and I will try to listen up for any one with trouble. Will be bringing along of the advanced life support toys I play with on a daily basis.

Sounds like you heard before I did! I was in Atlanta all weekend and my phone went flat. Anyway, Roger emailed to say they left noon on Sunday. They'll have to haul a$$ along with the trucks, but they should make it. Those of us flying aren't changing our plans- it'll just be the other half of our crew cutting it close!

Thanks Jason for helping Phil and the mog crew... there really is a lot of stuff.

My apologies to Carlos Castillo, dropped the ball on his reg but he's covered, and apology to Alvaro Rodriguez who did not receive his confirmation but we got you covered Alvaro on run #4.

All groups (except the breakfast run #4) meet at Loon Lake... that's you Stran. Loon Lake and its a bit of a jaunt of Hwy 50 (35 miles worth of jaunt).

Try to arrive early to allow time for trail head activities, etc.
