: Quick disco widshield?

Has anyone ever replaced the center pin in the windshield hinge (on a CY, YJ, or TJ) with one that can be taken out quickly so the windshield can be taken off really quick? I have heard it can be done but I would like to see pics and get directions. I can't fold my windshield down because part of my exo cage is in the way.

Why do you need pics or directions. Super easy man. Find two hitch pins the same diameter and slightly longer than the hinge pins. Pop out stock pins, replace with hitch pins. done. :smokin: Instant disco window. That's one of those stupid little projects on my list too, I just always forget to look for the pins when I'm near Blue Collar Supply.

Do the stock pins come out that easily? I was wondering if you have to grind the last quarter inch or so on each side for them to come out. I would like to talk to some one who has done it first so I don't end up buying new hinges.

Hahahaha.... mine are falling out all the time! About every mile or so on the trail I gotta tap em back in with a rock. :D

Just grab a center punch and a hammer and tap away. Should pop right out. If not, pop one end out as far as you can, grind it a tad and go back the other way. Should slide right out then.

Just go for it dude. :)

Hahaha. Didn't know they were that loose. Thanks, I'll give them a wack!

I just ground down the outer edges of the hinge where they are welded, it didnt take much, not much penetration on those welds, then drove the pins out with a punch. They still fit fairly tight so they dont "walk" out while driving, but I imagine they will loosen up over time. The hitch pins are a good idea. I also put some quick disconnects on the wires to my wiper motor. Its definately a good idea to take off the windshield frame when wheel'n cause theres always a chance of a roll over when your trying to "Get it!":D

You'll need to grind of the welds on each side. About 1/8", just look for where the weld ends.

Mine were frozen in place. I used a 3/8 drill bit and drilled in 1", then place them in a vice and drove them out with a punch. Or so I thought. They didn't Move! (I told you they were stuck) So I placed them in the freezer and that was all it took. Tapped the right out with a 3 lbs BFH.
Then I ran a 7/16" bit through the center of the hinge to clean it. Then just found a 7/16" by 4 1/2" stainless steel bolt and nut to hold everything together. Works great (double nut it tight to keep the teenager from walking off with your windshield)

i watched a guy try this on a 89YJ and he ground each side pins would not come out... he tried (for an hour) to drill them out ...no luck... he went to 4WP and baught some Steelhorse hinges and cut the end off then replaced with hitch pins... i think that i will leave my factory ones in one piece and just do the steelhorse conversion... that way in the winter and the windshield rattles i can put the factory ones back on...

Ahhhhh, mabe that's why mine are always falling out. I think I have the POS steelhorse ones. That explains it. Yeah, OEM hinges may be a bit more of a PITA. :D

Mine were factory hinges. On Loppy's advice I just beat the crap out of them with a BFH and they came out! There were no welds or anything, they were just pressed in. Just make sure you beat them from thge inside (center of vehicle) out. They are a little bigger on one end. Thanks!

On my CJ-7 I had to grind the ends similar to what Mr.N described. I then went with a cad plated bolt and nylon lock nut. Works fine.

Also while you have the hinge apart you could place a greese zerk in the middle hing, just tap the hole. Haven't tried this just a thought as mine were rusted solid!

Anyone remove the rear tail gate hinge pin? Know the ID size? I need to do them now. Yep also frozen by rust.
