: d44 or toy axle
chevota 01-10-2002, 02:15 PM I am looking at swaping out the toy axle and installing a d44 or corp. 10 bolt, but can't seem to make up my mind as to do the swap or build the toy axle.
If the swap is the way to go is the wagoneer the best route.
Help me decide what is the better choice of axle. With the new super birf and randy's new kit soon to be out it's tough to figure out which way to go. Talk to randy and his co. says that the toy front will be stronger than a stock D44 and that is the same answer I've got from newfield. And then Mr. super birf is said to be the strongest alterative to the d60 so who are we to believe. Instead of listening to the dealers I want to know what the real world users think
Thanks for any input
AustnJPR 01-10-2002, 02:57 PM They made a 10 bolt front?:rasta:

Wilson 01-10-2002, 03:39 PM Once I get my alloy shafts, my 44 will probably be stronger than I need for a while. Your question is comparing stock 44 to a highly modified toy axle, swap out the 44 shafts (equiv of super birf) and run the bigger spicer ujoint and it should be plenty strong for the same or less $$$. Does Jess still make the 1 ton ujoints for 44's?????
onetoncv 01-10-2002, 08:43 PM i mkae a one ton joint pinoin joint for the d-44- the wheel joint 5-760 x is a good strong joint too- and we also offer a dana 44 flange so you can run oyur toyota driveline - meaning less problems and breakage due to angles and stress- Jess
onetoncv 01-10-2002, 08:45 PM and the d-44 toyota flange we make custom - becuase your toyota driveline is the best to run- don't run the 1310 1/2 conversion stuff its cheesy-this was a test we did to make sure it would hold-hehe that's a 44" swamper curtisy of mr. ladd and a 460 pushing that one tire lock to lock- rear line pulled- Jess

where did you get your alloy shaft from? how much did they cost?
thanks
onetoncv 01-10-2002, 08:53 PM use moser axles there the strongest we found- here's the d-44 to toy flange we make-Jess
chuck-toy 01-10-2002, 09:46 PM I have got a narrowed gm dana 44 that is 62" wide. It has full high steer and uses an fj80 tie rod at the pitman arm. It bolts right in a toyota, everything is brand new with 5.38 gears (works great with my 5.29 rearend) and a lockright. There is a Moser shaft in the shortside but I grenaded the long side moser shaft, just a stock spicer shaft in the long side now. I will take $1600 for it complete and ready to bolt in.
Wilson 01-10-2002, 09:48 PM Jess- I've been waiting to see those pics of Mike's burnout, heard about it last year. How much would you charge to change my front line to a toy u joint with your flange. I currently have the spicer joint at the diff and the yoke is showing signs of rubbing from the angles, I'm assuming. I may need to go with the 80 degree cv, si teh line I just got form you scrapped then?
Deleon87-I haven't ordered the alloys yet. Mike at Bent and Twisted told me that they were available and advised that I get them, since my housing is custom width. I don't know what they cost, somewhere from$150-180 per side, I think. I'm going to use regular stub shafts, they're easy to come by. I'm getting the shafts and a detroit for the front in a couple of weeks. I can let you know what they cost then.
- You're really going to be in trouble Jess once the detroit is in, you'll be seeing some fuel injected ssr action!
onetoncv 01-11-2002, 08:45 AM hey wilson -give me a ring on the pricing your in a special pricing group-hehe- and i can't wait to get side by side in new powder and see who gets it awn more-Jess:D

Hey ToughGuy, don't sell in here, we have a 4sale section, SPAMMER!
NE-RokToy 01-11-2002, 09:57 AM I figure for the price of crossover and a locker for my toy axle I can do the same to a dana 44. And for the price of those super birfeilds I can get alloy shafts (OK alloy costs a little more but super birfs don't get you alloy do they :flipoff2: ) Oh yeah I will get more width, Bigger breaks, and alot better turning radius. But if you guys want to keep your toy axles go ahead. not trying to start the age old argument!
Wilson 01-11-2002, 09:37 PM deleon87- I asked mike about axle prices today and the alloys are $150 per shaft, so for inners and outers it would be $600. I'm just going with alloy inners, stub shafts are easy to find and are cheap. I'd have to break a lot of them to equal $350. I think that that price is less than the super birf's!!!
Jess, I'll give you a ring next week then. How was hte snow run. I'm heading up around 6. Not sure where we're goign to camp yet, but we'll probably drop into spring valley tomorrow night and play around for a bit. I'd apperciate an ice..........I mean snow report. You don't want to go side by side with me again do ya??? you had that chance last time and I passed you by a 100yds or so,before you found my ruts.:) :) j/k
livermore2 01-11-2002, 10:20 PM the Dana 44 came with those stock U-joints for a reason.
because if a part is to fail it will be towards the outside of the axle, thus more easy to fix. if you use a 60 joint on a 44 now your more apt to break an axle or ring/pinion wich is more difficult to fix. just sharing what i learned. bottom line if you have money to beef up your toy or D44 axle, just buy a D60 and be done with it. IM0 a 44 is not much better than a toyota axle
