On the topic of these super birfs. Has anyone broken them yet?

and either tell us what did break them or what didn't break them (hardest, meanest thing you have done to them)

THANK YOU

If so, are you involved with the dude who makes them or what? I might be wrong but I dont think they ahve been on the market that long!

TyTy-
apparently, long's been building these birfs for several years, but has not really tried to market them. several people up in WA are running them and have been for years. i guess these are the guys he wheels with. he has just recently "gotten serious about sellig them" according to a previous thread.

lol, ty ty ty ty, he has been making them for about 3 years, and the specs on his truck
85 toy pickup, 440 dodge[440 ci V8] dual 4s[2 4barrle carberators], 727 trans,[auto transmission] 203,[that is a transfer case] welded 437s,[welded up stock gears to make spool efect] 38 boggers[ well they make 37" and 39.5 boggers so I don't know WTF he has for tires. Who knows why he runs dual 4barrel carbs, drag cars manage 7second 1/4 mile times with one carb

I have known bobby for about 5 years. I am one of those guys that go wheelin with him. I have one of the first pairs ever made. He now heat treats the centers as well as the outers. My joints only have the outers treated but after testing they are a lot stronger if you heat treat both. When i start building my 8.34 in the front i will get a new set that have the inners treated. These things are really strong. The dual 4s are just for fun but they work very well.

I am excited about getting these things in but.......

One things makes me wonder. Some where in a post I read that there are some 300 sets of these things out there. And in theory only 2 have broken.

300 is alot of sets of super birfs. I would think that more of us would have heard of them before.

Any ways Bob was super nice over the phone and I hope they are everything they are supposed to be. We shall see:beer:

I read the 300 that are out there are for sami's. He just recently started selling them for toys.

I'm getting a set soon, with a welded front and twin sticks. I'm going this route so when an axle does break, it doesn't take the detroit with it.

Not true he made them for toys first....he has done them for samis and also FJ80's.

Question.....how would you break the detriot from just breaking a birfield:question:

a broken axle will not kill a locker unless your dumb enough to keep driving on it... if the axle breaks replace it, don't keep driving, a broken axle will eventually hurt a locker, but not if you stop right away.. drive a mile or 2, possibly, and whoever told ya sammy shafts were first is :smokin: some good shit....

I thought the when the axle broke and unloaded on the locker, the shock grenaded it?

If a broken axle doesn't take the detroit out right away, how will driving on it hurt it? Since it's broken it's not putting any stress on it at all. It might tear up the housing but not the locker.

It just seems odd to me that he's sold 300 of these and hardly anyone on this board has heard of them before. I'm sure a lot of us have done a lot of research on toy stuff and to just now hear about these? Did he sell these by word of mouth only? So it seemed reasonable that the 300# came from sammi birfs.

280 birfields sold for toyotas,20 for sami's.=300. That's what he said he had sold as of a month and half ago.

Not the birf, the inner axle. This is not first hand experience but I have heard that when when an axle snaps it unloads on the detroit and will cause it to break.

No one can back me up on this?

Can someone shoot (PM, email) me the contact info for this chap.

If he can do sami and toy birfs he might be able to do rover cvs (I promise I will go back from whence I came as soon as I get the contact info)

Ron

PS yes if you snap an axle the detroit will often go with it.

PPS whats the going rate on a 3L toy diesel motor?

YES, a breaking axle CAN cause a Detroit to break! I have done it... This is exactly why Warn does not recommend using a Detroit locker with their :rainbow: ass hub fuses. The "shock" of a violent break can cause a Detroit's guts to break. The locker doesn't fail, it merely becomes a spool. It does NOT unlock under any circumstance. Mine's been this way for about two years now and it's still working.

i agree you can break the side gear in a detroit when you snap an axle or hub i've done it twice from breaking rear locking hubs - i run drive flanges now

I wonder if there are any Redline kits that are still alive.....

I was damn close to ordering on of those kits. Glad I didn't. I am curious though if some of them worked out OK and are still going strong.

I'm pretty sure that Opps is still running a redline kit...I don't think he has had any problems, but don't quote me on that :D
