What about them. I know the difference between R&P and spline count but what about the axle tubes. amc20 tubes are thicker than d44 but are also thicker than d44 m38a1 uses.

Pull the tubes from the AMC20 and press them into the 44.

Or get a 44-HD from an early wagoneer. 76-80 something. It has dana 44 diff with an amc 20 style housing, and larger tubes. The shafts seem bigger too. I have one of these oddball units, and havent got it under a working jeep yet, but I will soon.
I thought it had amc20 gears, so I got a locker for it. Turns out it has 44 gears. At least, according to all the parts stores around me. It has one piece shafts, and bearings at the ends.
Dunno if that helps you or not.

Huh??????

There's no such thing as a model 20 with 44 guts. Waggy/J truck Model 20's were a heavier duty version of the same thing that came in CJ's. They use model 20 parts. You either have a 44 or you have a 20 and your parts guy is :smokin:

I guess I will take option number two. Damn these bastard axles anyway.

Buy a one piece axle kit for the 20 and spot weld the tubes in four locations where they press into the housing and it will be equal to or stronger than a 44. Corprate 20 have a better pinion setup and larger ring gear. The pinion nose is not prone to shearing like on a 44. Just my .02
