i tried to do a search but it is not working.

what would be a good gear ratio for 35 or 39" tires?

i was thinking of going with 4.88's or 4.56 and end up with the 39" tires,.
the truck will see the street. i don't really care much about gas milage

Depends on your rig and how you use it. Rocks, Mud, Sand? V-8, V-6, 4 cyl?

My 4500# EB has 38.5's and 4.88's. It's used mostly in rocks.

Most 4 cyl Toy's & Zuki's run 5.29's.

i run 5.89's behind a 318/auto/dana300 on 37's.

i wish it was lower.

Rocks only, no street.

edit: really the only way you can determine what you want is to go wheel/drive around in someones rig that is set up similar to yours.

right now i have the front 10 bolt and rear 10-bolt and 33" with 4" lift.
the 33's i have suck with traction so i am getting some 33x14x15 boggers till iget the new axles,

the setup i want will be 14-bolt FF rear and dana 60 front with high crossover steering. i justfound a 14 bolt for 250 so i am getting that. iwould liek to run 39.5" boggers
the truck will see trails in AZ, some rocks and mud. i just took it on the FR42 and it did good. but i need better flex and some better tires,

what motor and tranny do you currently have? What gears do you currently have and how do you think it runs down the road now? these will help answer your question.

Power affects it too, I ran 5.29's with my flintstone peddle power 4 banger, but 4.10's keep me smilin ear to ear with my 5.0 with 38's :)

motor now is a 305 that is in it. i have a 350 thatis going in it. and than the 305 is getting stroked than going back in. but it would have a 350, tranny is a 700R4, the gears i don't know of , i do know they are stock, and driving down the road sucks, it has no power, ( i think the carb is done) and when you drive on the highway it goes in and out of overdrive, so i just keep it in D now.

first don't bother building a 305... strocked or not better off starting with a 350 but that should be a whole nother thread

As far as gears, since you have a 700r4 you can go much deeper with the overdrive. I would go with 5.38's, you could cruise at about 70mph and a little over 2500rpm

check out www.4lo.com for a gear ratio calculator so you can play with different ratios and tires. Also I'm pretty sure 39" TSL's are just a bit over 37" true hight.

isn't the 305 the same block as a 350 just different bore and stroke?

and the lowest i have found for a 14bolt and a D60 is 5.13
unless i missed someone who sells a lower gear

hands down 5.13s, especially if you have the 700 tranny

the lowest gears you can get for a 14 bolt are 5.13 i believe, so that's why you can't find them lower.

WHY? cause of the tire size? what if i went to 37's instead.

b/c with over drive with 37s it will put you right in peak torque which is were you want to be and if you go with 39s you will want 5.13s

I like my 4.88's with my 39.5's, But I have a built 454 that can turn them and no overdrive. with the size engine your running and with overdrive 5:13's are definatly the way for you to go. And yes 5.13 is the lowest gear set for a 14B FF.

P.S. throw the 305 in a go-kart or something, there is no replacement for displacement.

Red flag here!!!! did anyone realize that he is going to pay $250 for a 14 blt. without a doubt you could get 5 of them for that much here. i think i would look for a cheaper one and save some money for a front 60!

Yeah I noticed that too... if you want to drive to Salt Lake I have 3 in my backyard, I'll give you one! SOme deal, huh? :D

Anyways, I have a 350, th350, 3.8 atlas, 4.56's in a 60 and 14 bolt with 39" tsl's and couldn't be happier. If the gears were free I wouldn't change ratio.
Oh yeah that just my opion, take it as you may.
