: Who runs 38 and up tires on toy axles?
Skyetone 01-10-2002, 09:42 PM I know it's been run to eath. I'd look up 38's but need 4 letters so I will just ask.
I got a toy axle. I will put a spacer and will like my toy axle. Can wheel (sorta) with my toy axle. will keep the toy axle. Run 35 muds now, gonna throw on 36swamps, but have some 40-17 hawgs that I get to screw around with here and there. GAWD I like the look of BIG tires and big axle clearance. My point goes like this, I know several push 38's and now with the "super birf" or whatever could you run 38's for a while without much breakage? I will need big tires soon and for the what 300$ extra for strong birfs it still is cheeper than dana swap.
fullywrecked 01-10-2002, 09:51 PM I ran 38.5 SX's on mine and loved the added ground clearance. If you buy the superbirfs you should be fine.:D
Skyetone 01-10-2002, 09:57 PM How much hell did the sx's give the birfs?
mudtruck44 01-10-2002, 10:15 PM I ran 40" Gumbo's on my '89 when it was still IFS and open front. It looked awesome and went everywhere in mud but didn't break the front end for a few months. With a locked front, probably won't last too long though.
Skyetone 01-10-2002, 10:21 PM I played in some dirt hills the other day and no prob. I drove on em with IFS way earlier. How'd you get em ballanced?
Skyetone 01-11-2002, 06:15 AM BTTT for the work a day guys :D
MattS 01-11-2002, 09:12 AM I'm gonna buy a set of super birf's for this summer and see what happens. I don't have the time to build a set of d60's right now and have been looking at mog stuff. I still have not decided about the T-case yet but I might buy an atlas. Right now it's just a 203. So it's not geared real low.
I will be thrashing my Turbo 4.3 (330 hp) 700R4, 203, toy axles with 5.71's with 39's. :D Will let everyone know the damage report.
Shake 'N' Bake 01-11-2002, 09:12 AM I originally had an 83 pick-up that had 39.5 TSL's on it for 6 1/2 years. It was wheeled constantly and the toy axles held up just fine. I did break a few gear sets but no birfields etc. This was back in the late 80's and early 90's and the gears were much more suspect then than they are now. Now I have an 85 4-runner with 39.5's again. I hav only run 5 trails with them since this set-up went in but no problems. The trails I have run recently have included Iron Chest, Holy Cross and 3 in Montrose, Scratch and Dent, Cactus Ridge and Topless. So it can be done and done well.:)
Brian Ellinger 01-11-2002, 09:23 AM Been running the 39.5/15/15 tsls for a little while now, 6-8 months I think. Keep them out of the body, if they "rub" they dont clear! And keep them from hitting the springs and youll be alright. With one of our front WIDE kits, the steering stops are only turned out a little. Its got an ARB, which helps a lot, but from what people tell me, Im not driving it too nicely. Some guy in Montrose said I was driving like I had 60's. I didnt think I was being that bad, but it did play pogo-stick a few times.
4cyl, EFI, 4.88's, and it'll do 60-65 on the speedo (70/75+)sometimes more, has zero shimmy/shakes, mileage is about 16 or 18. Oh and that's above 5000 ft.

2FNLOW 01-11-2002, 09:58 AM :usa:
I run 39.5 Swampers on 15x12 rims on Toyota axles w/ a 3.0 Toy
V6 engine. I like this set up because of the low weight of the
axles and the axle clearance.
I knew a guy who ran Chevy Dana 60's and 14 Corporates in his
rigs. The next year I saw him and he had a new rig with 1/2 axles
under it. He ran alot of mud bogs with 40" Swampers.
So I asked him what happened to the 1 ton axles you like to run
He said to me with a growl. I rather break than drag! So that was
his argument for mud running. (Take that as you will)
There was a guy in the late 80's/early 90's that used to run
a 83 SB with 13" lift, 3 shocks per wheel, 5.71 gears, detroits
front and back, w/the header and 2.25" exhaust w/ 42's!!!
He would air down his tires and he could drive really well over
most terrain (keep in mind this was 12 or so years ago so his
wheeling was kinda old skool compared to the mag pics we see
today) But, they say he used to rock crawl with it. (I dunno
I never heard of him even breaking a gearset of a birfield. The
locals talk of that truck like it was a legend with tales of
tying trucks that where lesser and couldn't make it over the
terrain to the rear bumper and the "Dirty White Boy" -that is what
he called it, would pull the truck with him through the terrain.
That truck died though in 99 when he drove it off a cliff doing
what they termed "cliff diving" when the ground gave way before
he was ready to go off the edge. (That is a matter of discussion
all by itself) It landed on it's roof and thanks to the roll cage inside
the cab it didn't kill him but, the impact broke the truck in half
And get this ( it was a Smittbuilt show bar at that)
Good luck in what ever you choose:usa:
MattS 01-11-2002, 10:00 AM LOL your not funny. :flipoff2: :D Yeah I will take a set. I need to send the cores in to get them as I understand. You can come and watch. As soon as the motor is running I am going to try a wheel stand up the street. My friends figure I will toast the rear and then break the front trying to get back in the driveway. The camcorder will be running!!!

JackA 01-11-2002, 02:22 PM Slap on the big meats. If it breaks. Fix it. You can't wheel with the fear your junk is gonna break. Just hammer it and have fun.:D
As long as I can get it back on the trailer to get home.
Skyetone 01-11-2002, 05:19 PM WTF IS A TRAILER? no seriosly!!
I LOVE the wheelie idea. gotta let me know.
Hell I may go big and see what happens. Gotta ballance the 40's right now,
JackA 01-11-2002, 07:56 PM Looks like you need to bust out the groover and do alittle work to the Hawgs. That solid center section has got to go.
Skyetone 01-12-2002, 10:05 AM again not my tires :D
ron gosser 01-12-2002, 07:46 PM Ok here are the stats. 440 toy pickup, toy axels, 38.5 boggers, welded both ends, auto, 203. Built 2 years ago. Many mud bogs and tuff truck events and couple dozen wheelin trips.HAVE BROKEN, 5 rear ring pinion, 3 front ring pinion, 4 trannys, 2 203s, 2 rear axle shafts, alot of dodge starters, Many alternators. I used to run a ramcharger with dana 70s and a 440. Those rearends were strong but to much drag. Toyota is way faster and less drag. I even beat bobby long out of first place at a mudd bog a couple years ago with my toy but he is runnin 60s on a old bronco with 38.5s. Never have broke a bobby long front axle. Dont no how many stock ones i broke.
Lil' blue Yoyo 01-13-2002, 12:16 AM Hey Ron, what kind of R+P do you buy? Any special kind? I've got a few buddies who were blowin' em up and are now running precision stainless and haven't had one blow up since. And that's a dodge 440?
Skyetone 01-13-2002, 10:45 AM Surprised to hear of the rear shafts breaking. Must be the HP? :D When you gonna throw me some good pix so we can throw them up eh? oh and I want your birfs(or so we call them here) when you get your "new ones" :D whata ya think? Drop me a PM.
