: Locker vs spool

I'm thinking about switching my Lock Rite thirdmember to the front and running a spool in the rear of my toy. It is not a daily driver and will be trailered to all distant trails. Will the toy rear axle hold up well with 35" boggers and a spool?

Yes they will, after all it is a Toyota...... And as long as your spring hangers are welded properly.:D :D

Save your money on the spool and weld the rear. Typically the same thing is accomplished for a fraction of the cost.

move your rear diff to the front and weld the front and slap it in the rear.....done. :D

welding is a fine option if you don't mind the "when is it gonna break" factor.

spools are cheap and foolproof.

your rig will be fine on 35 and a spool. i run 38 and a spool with out much problem related to the spool.

But if you weld it right - it shouldn't fail - right camo?

I ran a spool for a year and loved it, but I just switched to a detroit and sold the spool. I couldn't afford buying new tires all the time. I really like the detroit, my turning radius has increased, and it isn't chewing up tires.

i guess i have seen to many welded diffs fail to belive that. sure it works for awhile but i consider it a tempeory locker cause it is gonna fail sooner or later.

buy a real spool :D

I don't have spider gears in either thirdmember to weld. I'm selling my true trac, and moving my lock rite rear diff to the front, then putting a spool in back with my front third. I'm a good welder but don't want to go through the hassel of finding a stock carrier to weld etc.

Buy the spool, when my welded rearend went in my "55 doorslamer" it not only took out the carrier and gears but also the housing. I really saved money welding the rear end huh!!!! Of course side stepping the clutch at 6 grand had nothing to do with it:D  :usa:

I run a spool in the rear of my '85.
...and its my daily driver.
Other than the excessive tire wear that I am experiencing. I dont mind it at all.
One thing is for sure, I am not worried about it breaking on me.
Just my $0.02

I'll second this. I'm about to rotate my tires for the first time after putting the spool in. The new tires came a week later. I probably have about 2400 miles on them and the wear difference isn't that drastic, especially considering that I haven't babied it at all. The tire bark still sounds cool!!!!!!!!!
