: Tube Fenders...PICS

I finally got around to making some tube fenders. They're not done yet, I am still adding a few more pieces. I still need to cut out the rest of the fender also.http://pics.montypics.com/Jason861/2004-04-20/1082476590_IMG_0631.jpg

That's not where I usually rub. I usually rub the quarters, or else higher up on the fender...

If I were going to exo, which I am not, I would run something about even with the middle of the fender/quarter.... That seems to be where I get the most contact... Of course, if I learned to drive, I might rub a bit less... Actually, until two trips ago, my fenders were fine, but I slipped sideways on a log and crumpled that passenger fender while trying to follow Binder around some ugly stuff ...

is it just me or is the bottom part of that tube fender welded sideways flat to the rock slider?? if so thats ugly, you should have notched that tube and welded it to the top of the slider. Also a lot stronger.

Pat, You can't drive!!! :flipoff2: It took years to get my right side beat in and it doesn't look that bad! :smokin:
On a side note I did a Photo shoot with 4 wheel and Offroad in Moab over on the sand hills at Proving grounds during the heep Safari.. :grinpimp:

LOL. Very true. Most of that damage I have gotten is from trying to follow folks with much bigger tires and much better setups. Pretty rare when I wheel with folks running anything smaller than 38's, with the exception of Rusty, and then we both are usually following the 38's around.. :)

A halfway decent driver would have made it unscathed, but, well, that tells you something.. ;)

Trying to remember my first real dent... but can't remember it.

But, I do remember I stopped taking dents out 3 years ago... <chuckle>

Actually, for a while the only thing you "massaged" was the last foot of the rear quarters... where all wheeled scouts take it. And it wasn't that bad at that.

Lately pat has stopped learning how to drive and just plowed his way threw... rather than assess his situation and line up better (or save it for another day ;))

Lots of fun when he tries an obstacle to the point that he gets total out of position, blows a u-joint and has to drag the side of the truck against a tree to get out... and still doesn't make it :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :D

I wisely went around and didn't break anything :D

You took the 2wd line... wisely, considering the driver. :D :D :D

I, on the other hand, took the tough line and gave it a real run for its money. Of course, it has taken me 3 months to put my truck back together, but, remember, I wheeled for another couple hours after I blew that joint, so it wasn't *that* bad... ;)

I used to give up and go around obstacles if I thought significant body damage was likely, but more recently, I have been working the line, even if I end up sideways against a tree.. <chuckle> I'm still a bit edgy if I think a roll or flop is likely though. Ask Binder when we went up Sack Up, and I got light going around one corner. I was pretty tense as the driver side went light on me... But that would have been a NASTY roll.

And, I think you will admit I try to finesse the lines, rather than hammer them..

That was a fun rock though!!

You just like your truck pretty!! ;)

Hooper ~ If my Scout looks anywhere close to that ~ it'd be a buggy within a month or two!

In fact, my Scout looks better than that and will still become a buggy in a month or two.

Yes, but you can't run around town in a buggy!! I can still DD mine. In fact, it is sitting in the parking lot right now :D :D :D

And, most of the time when folks comment, they say things like *Now that (insert incorrect vehicle manufacturer) gets used the way it was meant to be used* or something similar...

Maybe you west-coast guys can't ~ but when police officers drive around in tube buggies ~ and tubed Toys and Zuki's are running around town like it aint no thing ~ then I do. Heck, as long as we have a plate on it, and it's not posing a serious danger to others, cops let us drive anything around.

Heck, we'd drive TC (Project 2) around on a second's notice ~ we drove it to a couple in-town shows, get lunch, not to mention the owner driving to us for any modifications he wanted to do.

Now if I had one of those Rice-Rocket Honda/Toy/Nissan/Mazda slot racers ~ THEN I'd get pulled over.

And, most of the time when folks comment, they say things like *Now that (insert incorrect vehicle manufacturer) gets used the way it was meant to be used* or something similar...
My big thing is that the 79 Scout I *inherited* from a past employee turns out to be a little more rusty than I originally thought ~ so its going to be easier to turn it into a rear-buggy tube job w/ Scout quarters fastened to it than having to replace the rockers (inner and outer), floors, bed, quarters, etc....

DK all the laws out here. But, windshield (or else goggles), mud flaps, bumper size, height restrictions, lift restrictions, plus the challenge of getting a license plate for a tube buggy to begin with, state patrol inspections, etc, etc, etc... It can be done, it just is not easy, nor is it usually practical up here... Not to mention, where do you put the groceries? <chuckle>

Not bagging on tube buggies. But, mine is still multi purpose... not ready to give that up.. yet.. ;)

True. I came pretty close to making it over, but the last 12 inches beat me. Tried a different line and went sideways, the second video. Tried a little momentum and blew an axle ujoint, ended up leaning sideways against a tree. I was very happy the tree was there!!!

There are no annual (or ever) inspections in Montana.

And as long as you started with a licensed "something" and modified it, you just keep the same VIN tag and plates on the modified tube-chassis rig as you did on the parts donor.

So you could build a tube-buggy using the Hooper parts, and continue to license it as a Scout II.. er.. I mean SSII.. no, wait.. "Station Wagon"

There you are.

I already have a Scout I can only drive in the summer, and it's far from a tube buggy still.. but a tube-buggy would be worthless during prime wheeling season unless I built a fully enclosed cab for it. Even with the old hardtop on, -20 was just not too pleasant.. I can't imagine going topless and doorless at -20. I'd have to retire from wheelin'.

I think Hooper's just showing he's not a shallow web-wheeler / mall-crawler.. he doesn't care how his Scout *LOOKS*.. it's about how it WORKS. Mark me down in that category with Hoop. :D

As for you weenies taking the bypass.. what fun is that?

I need to spend some time wheeling in WA.. Hooper and I can see who can do the most tree-rubbin' on one run.

What's the fun without some body damage?

I can remember a couple years ago when patty didn't care for dents.... Even used to pound them out to an extend (he's NOT a body man). Now they have gotten too deap for him to pound out :D :D

Actually, I was on the trail, HE was on the "bypass" :flipoff2:

I wheel... honstly I do... I got the dents to prove it... it take a REAL man to wheel a Scout throught the trees WITH OUT dents (or atleast too many).

So sounds like I need a front Lock-rite and were on for a re-match patty??? Ahw heck, I'll do it with the front open so you'll HAVE to flog your junk to submission to follow me :flipoff2:

Hmm, anything smaller than a dime doesn't count as a *dent*. Those are door dings, from the grocery store.. <chuckle>

it take a REAL man to wheel a Scout throught the trees WITH OUT dents (or atleast too many).

Or, at least, it takes someone who isn't afraid to skip an obstacle and thereby avoid almost certain damage. Although, truth be told, if I hadn't broken the axle, I probably would not have had any damage last trip out...

True, that is a very nasty spot with good reason to get tense. Hooper handled it like a pro. :D

:yeck: Remember when we got near the end and had the option of that nasty off camber that tipped toward the big tree with certain quarterpanel damage for me, or going back through the trail.... I opted for the body damage. Going back through sounded like no fun at all... I was happy to escape that trail relatively unscathed... thanks mostly to your excellent spotting.. ;)

and who's winch line pulled your sorry ass off that tree?????

Kevy made it, sure. But he had to work at it and couldn't make the line he wanted. You were working the same line he ended up taking and couldn't make it and broke.... I didn't feel like breaking my junk that day (and I WOULD have popped a front joint just like you did, they were pretty dry when I changed them ) So I decided to save it for another day. But if you want me to spank your ass just to bruise your ego... I suppose I could.....

so since when has taking "almost certain damage" been a requirement of running a line?? You been hanging out with tube buggy guys too much. Body damage happens, and I usually don't cry about it, but I don't go looking for it either.... Isn't part of the challenge of wheeling to make an obstacle WITH OUT dents, creases or breaking sh*t?? Let me know if it isn't, cause obviously I have something wrong...

Touchy, touchy... ;)

Yep, Kevin didn't make the right side line that day either. Did the same as I, sat and spun, although he made it much farther up than I. His advantage is the big axles. He could go for wheel spin and momentum to get him up the left side...I broke when I tried that...

I'd opt for not breaking anything, if possible. But, as I said that day, Isabelle Trail is my nemesis. I have yet to take that trail without breaking something..

Some lines you know you are going to take damage the way we are set up. Just the way it is. So, we can either go around, which we do sometimes, or take the damage, which we also do sometimes...

No, you have never gotten upset about a dent (haven't seen you crease anything since that front fender way back when), you just like to take the dents back out again. Although, I don't think you have dented since you got married, so we have yet to see how married life plays into it.. :D

And, yes, you know I would rather not dent and crease. I still care, but I just care about it a little less than you do. :)
