'Environmental Victory Project' Plans Unprecedented Grassroots Effort in Four Battleground States to Defeat Bush and Elect John Kerry
WASHINGTON, April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Leading members of the national environmental community today formally launched at a press conference rally the "Environmental Victory Project," an unprecedented grassroots effort with the singular goal of defeating President George W. Bush and electing John Kerry in November.

The Environmental Victory Project (EVP) coalition includes the Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund, Friends of the Earth Action and the League of Conservation Voters (LCV). This is a unique coalition that demonstrates the extent of the political coordination inside the environmental community in 2004 and the unity of purpose among environmentalists in the effort to defeat George Bush.
The Environmental Victory Project will target four battleground states -- Florida, New Mexico, Oregon and Wisconsin. In each of these states the campaign will target independent, swing voters and conduct an ongoing conversation and dialogue -- both at the grassroots level and through media advertising -- in an effort to convince voters to reject the failed policies of George W. Bush and vote for John Kerry.
The effort will be built around an extensive door-to-door campaign, which intends to mobilize 25,000 volunteers to knock on the doors of 1.5 million households. Town Hall meetings, traditional voter contact programs, including phone banks and direct mail, will also be employed. Finally, much like the primary campaign effort the League of Conservation Voters waged on behalf of John Kerry this winter, the Environmental Victory Project intends to run an aggressive television advertising effort in markets where environmental volunteers will be knocking on doors.
One of the hubs of the Environmental Victory Project will be the campaign's website, www.envirovictory.org. The EVP website will serve as a recruitment point for environmental volunteers, voter registration information and offer a "Personal Campaign Headquarters" that provides voters and volunteers with the tools to run their own campaign to defeat George Bush.
EVP was launched because over the past four years, President Bush has compiled the worst environmental record in our lifetime, earning the first- ever "F" on LCV's 2003 Presidential Report Card. From clean air to safe drinking water to preserving public lands for future generations to enjoy, President Bush has consistently put corporate interests over those of the American public.
In sharp contrast, John Kerry has been a champion for the environment. Since helping to organize the first Earth Day in 1970, John Kerry has been one our nation's premier environmental leaders, and his voting record has earned him the highest lifetime LCV ranking of all the presidential candidates who competed this year with a 92%.
"When it comes to the environment, the current administration has routinely put polluting special interests before the public interest. At a time when 40 percent of our nation's waters are still too polluted for fishing and swimming, when 30,000 Americans die prematurely each year due to air pollution and when hundreds of toxic waste sites threaten our communities, our nation simply cannot afford another four years of George W. Bush," said Brent Blackwelder, President of Friends of the Earth Action.
"Involvement in the political process is new for us, driven by the Bush Administration's unprecedented attack on our environmental legacy," said Rodger Schlickeisen, President of Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund. "It's no contest. John Kerry as president means cleaner air and water, and restored protection of our public lands and wildlife heritage."
"The Bush Administration's approach to the environment demonstrates a clear bias towards the interests of corporate polluters at the expense of the health and safety of the public," said Deb Callahan, President of LCV. "In a year of escalating energy costs, special interest meddling, corporate subsidies and the inability of a pregnant woman in America to eat more than one helping of tuna a week because of mercury contamination, it's time for a change, and the Environmental Victory Project is our agent of change."
The nonprofit League of Conservation Voters (LCV) is the political voice of the national environmental and conservation community. LCV, which is not a partisan organization, is the only national organization working full-time to hold Congress and the president accountable for their environmental actions. This year LCV is launching the Environmental Victory Project, its largest effort ever in the presidential campaign, due to the unprecedented assault on the environment by the Bush Administration.
