OK, I'm not at all a Zuki guy-Toyotas are my thing, but I've got some questions for a buddy who just bought a Samurai fairly built. It's got stock drivetrain-the 1.3 I believe w/stock tranny, 4:1 case, stock axles, 5.38's, locked front and rear w/37"MTR's and it doesn't seem to be that low. We're lookin into the 8:1 gearset for the transfercase to take his crawl lower. What do yall think about this setup? Anybody else run this? Is there some reason why a 4:1 and 5.38's isn't that low on a Samurai? He's plannin crossover steering and hydraulic assist to get away from the z-link. Also, any real world experience with these birfield cups? Please go easy on me as I know nothing about Samurai's. Thanks in advance for any info/help! Flame suit on:D

Well those stock axels are not going to hold up to 37 inch mtr's, 8.1:1= too low..just my two cents. Throw some toy axels and a 1.6 in it

He's going to be breaking birfields every time he wheels - if he has birfield rings/cups, he'll break inner shafts - I spent all last summer playing this game. As far as crawl ratio, the 1.3 is gutless and needs lots of gearing - that is why you can get 4.89s, 5.4s, 6s and 8s for the t-cases - they are needed. I am running a diesel with 5.89s in my dana 44s and a 6 to 1 in the t-case for a crawl ratio of 134 - with 39.5s it works pretty well.

Shit.. I bust Toyota birfs with 37" MTRs. The Samurai axles do not have a chance. I also would not bother putting a hydro ram on a Samurai axle. Might just bend the housing rather then turn the knuckle.

Might want to sell of those tires and get something smaller or start investing in some better axles (Toy, Dana) with some upgraded parts.

Yea, with the tinny weenie 1.3 motor, 37's and a 78:1 final.. I can't imagine why it's not low enough :flipoff2:

Tell "your friend" with 37's, he needs to be in the 170:1 range minimum. Oh yea and tell him to upgrade the axles too :D
