I've never welded a carrier up before, how does that look? Keep in mind I just used flux core which made a complete mess of things. I didn't bother to clean it up since it's just a junk carrier for practice. When I do one for good I'll be using gas shielded. Anyways, what do you think? Any tips or advice?

i cant really tell from the picture but as long as all of the spider gears are welded together it should be fine. i have heard mixed opinions about welding the gears to the case as well. I personally have just the gears welded together. mine looks like crap(was done when i got the axle), but it works great. make sure that when you weld them together you can still get the center pin in. without that the wheels wont turn no mo. :flipoff2:

Ha! I normally just weld the center pin in with the rest of the crap!

yuk, if I was you I'd weld a piece of plate over the openings in the carrier so when it explodes all the chunks are contained in the carrier and dont wreck the gears or bearings. I've seen 2 welded diffs blow and it gets pretty messy.

Yeah, it looks O.K. but it's tough to tell with all the slag and crap on it... Clean it up and take another picture. :D :flipoff2:

you look like you are welding the right stuff, but it is hard as hell to tell if your welds are worth a shit or not. What was that quote a constipated pigeon?

Thanks for the replies, just wanted to make sure I was welding it up correctly. I know my welds are shit, I didn't bother to clean the slag off between welds. That carrier is junk (it is 35 after all ;) ) I wasn't worried about the weld quality on that one. Just trying to get an idea as to how hard it was going to be.

Eric ---- 8 small welds from the spiders to the sidegears would be better....try to minimize the heat transfer to the sidegears.
