: Drove a 77 FJ40 today - Selctro hubs?
sbaker84 04-26-2004, 03:48 PM First off, I'm pre-noob since I'm still looking to own an FJ40.
I drove a 77 today. The current owner reportedly has only driven it 3 times, and I didn't even talk to him today, so there was pretty much zero info about what had gone on previously with the cruiser.
Anyways, it had "Selectro" hubs, which I haven't heard of in my limited knowledge about cruisers. Can anyone give me any info on these? Are they any good?
Thanks,
Sean.
sbaker84 04-26-2004, 04:03 PM OK, looks like there are still sold by MileMarker. Were these ever stock on FJ40's?

cruiseroutfit 04-26-2004, 04:06 PM Been around for along time (30+ years)... I have never been a fan of them, I had a set on my first FJ40 10 years ago, and they actually seemed to work just fine... On a 77', I see no reason why not to run the OEM Aisin Hubs.. they have the hate/love cone washers that do their job... :D
You can score a set of the Aisins at a Pic'n'Pul for under $30 at times..
cruiserbrett 04-26-2004, 04:11 PM Cruiseroutfit: Mini-truck aisins and FJ60 aisins dont fit the early disk birfs. He would need the elusive 76-78 FJ55 Aisin hubs, or swap to Minitruck/FJ60 birfs.

Very true... ;)
Guess its a good time to get some Longs... or pull the mini-birfs from the donor truck at Pic'N'Pul... :D
Or..... I have one set of AISIN hubs in the box.... :D:D:D (not sure what year, picked them up the other day and havn't even looked closely at em')
The Jerk 04-26-2004, 04:19 PM but i wouldnt base my decicion on weather or not to buy a cruiser over the hubs it has.. jiMMy

Thats what I was thinking when I read his post....That would be one of my least concerns.
nuclearlemon 04-26-2004, 07:50 PM one of the guys in rising sun has them and loves them.
osteology 04-26-2004, 08:16 PM I had them on mine until I got Profields and put on Asins. Hard to engage every once in a while but I was bad about serviceing them - no other problems. Someone may chime in but I've heard that they might have been a dealer installed option.
Cruiser4242 04-26-2004, 09:11 PM I have them on my 72. Havent had any problems yet, I have broken Birfs, so they are strong enough I guess for now. I kinda like them actually, you just grab the whole thing and turn it. East to do when its muddy, dont have to get your fingers all wedged in the little holes.

GreenPig 04-26-2004, 10:19 PM Stronger than warns, and they don't stick out that far either....

I won't base my decision on the hubs. I've been trying to learn a lot about 40's, but I never saw these hubs, so it threw me a bit. I'm just trying to get an idea of what may have been changed out from original.
It drove OK, except the brakes were very inconsistent. Sometimes they'd catch pretty well, other times I'd go almost to the floor to stop. I also felt some clunking underneath whenever I went over a bump. Rust was not bad, I didn't see any rot, but there may be some more covered up by the recent paint. The underside looked pretty clean, except for the clunking which I couldn't locate easily (I was on my lunch hour). Actually looked very stock to me, with a very complete and original interior (seats, belts, headliner, dash, etc.).
What I really need is someone who will go out with me when I'm checking out a cruiser to help me give it a once over. I would pay for that service! Any takers in So Cal (Inland Empire, Orange County)? Maybe I'll start a separate thread.
Thanks for the info!
Sean.
