Can anyone give me pics, or illustrations on how a factory gas tank is mounted in an FJ55??? Somewhere along the pigs life it has had a surgery and some C channel behind the rear shackle mounts...and get this...a ford gas tank...interesting...
I have a long range 53+ gallon tank, an older one from man-a-free I believe, I will get pics...trying to figure out how to mount it, and how it interacts...
thanks

It has 4 mounts. The two in front where on the same piece of steel that the body mounts behind the rear wheels are. The two in the rear where just some C-Channel on the body almost all the way to the back. That is what I remember. I will take some pictures tonight and email or PM you.

I think that Man-a-Fre tank hangs on all-thread that passes through sleeves in the tank. I can take a picture of how my 55's stock tank is installed. So you're going to put the rear frame back on? Are you going to pull the body off? I'd do some diamond shaped patches to weld the frame back together. Good luck.

This is an old-school Man-a-Fre tank and may not be like yours, Evan. IIRC it has pass-thrus for all-thread so you can hang it. Does yours have this?

The MAF tank was from when MAF was in Boise Idaho, date of sale on the receipt I have is 9/23/83. The tank was mad by Custom Gas Tanks in CA. Ben, PM me your address and I'll get this receipt to you. I forgot it in my glove box when we met in UT.

I was wondering what the hell all the holes were for in that tank...
I"ll PM my address ken, thanks
I think I get how it mounts now, not sure how it seals...attached is a booty fabulous pic, the blue being the all-thread, and how i think it mounts..would you just use a washer, stainless and maybe gasket (silicon, plastic, rubber, then cinch it down from the top of the tank? ie nuts on top and bottom of the tank? then make a plate or mounting tabs so that you can sandwich them with nuts/locknuts as well to mount it....would this be a strong enough method??? I guess it's how they made it... :smokin: ....

There was two different styles of mounting pig tanks. The early style bolts directly to the body, and hangs from four bolts. The second (and newer) style is some removeable mounts off the top of the frame. To drop the tank, you have to remove the mounts. On the '73 diesel, the 38 gal tank recently fell because the 31yr old body style mounts rusted away. I'm going to build my mounts based off the newer style and bolt the tank off the top of the frame.
