I've got a buddy who is looking at an 88 Ford Ranger 4x4, 2.9, 6 cyl. I don't know a thing about Fords. Can anyone tell us anything about this truck. Is it carb. or fuel injected?
My main concern is smog in California. I know you'd want to stay away from an 86 GM carbed motor around here due to all the CA emmision and that the 87 and up FI motor would be a much better chioce. Is Ford like that al all?
Thanks,
Eric M.

2.9l= FUEL INJECTED
nothing really special about them. They work good and work hard untill you over heat them, and crack a head. you'll find typical late-80's f/i technology here..

it's got MPFI.....and the 2.9 is a good motor, just make sure the cooling system is up to par, so you don't crack a head....2.9's are known for that if they are over-heated...

Good little engine, but as already stated, it only takes one good overheating to crack a head. A radiator for a 4.0 automatic Explorer would lay to rest most worries about that, and bolts right in.
I don't have smog around here. Is there any reason why you wouldn't be able to get it smogged before you purchased it?

In California you're actually supposed to smog it for a title transfer. I believe the law says its the seller's responsibility.
might wanna check out the transmission if its an automatic, there not all that reliable.
