: how strong are 12 bolts??
Bill4rest 01-12-2002, 07:18 AM Sorry for the retard:question: .
I was thinking about putting in a lockright just for easy to md trail riding like up in Bigbear or for Terra del sol. My Samurai is not done and I need to wheel!
oh and I only have a 4" with 33's
Thanks
scoobydann 01-12-2002, 11:36 AM It will hold up fine in my opinion. a friend of mine has a 12 w/ a lockrite, 35's and a doubler and has had no problem on the trails of Arizona. on the other hand another friend of mine had the detroit e-z locker w/ 35" swampers and broke the teeth on his a week after he bought it. went to the full detroit after that.

Cool thanks, I know the Lockright has a better warranty, that's what I run in my Samurai.
Desertdueler 01-12-2002, 07:34 PM Run a mini spool. Its cheaper and you will be happier. I am running a mini spool in mine and it works awsome. I like it because it doesnt give you the locker weave in sweeping turns. Also I dont have to worry about it locking or not because its always there:) And it wears the tires just as quick as a lock-right.
clreinstein 01-12-2002, 10:17 PM What about the c-clips when you install a mini spool?
Desertdueler 01-13-2002, 10:33 AM Mini spools still use c-clips. They dont make a full spool for the truck rearends(full spools dont use c-clips). If you want to you can use c-clip eliminators, but they will leak like crazy since they are meant for dragracing only (not meant for sideloads). If you are worried about braking an axle just carry a spare. Both sides are the same size.
clreinstein 01-13-2002, 03:20 PM Well i was thinking of getting a mini spool for the 10 bolt in my dads truck. I saw the mini spools that summit sells and it looked like you couldnt use the c-clips with them. Could you explain how the mini spool works and how it keeps the clips. Thanks for the previous info though. It will save me the cost of buying a lockright since i can get a mini spool for 99 dollars from summit.
Desertdueler 01-13-2002, 04:49 PM You can use the mini spool with c-clips. The one they picture is for a ford 9" Since the 9" doesnt use c-clip its one piece. The ones for c-clip are 4 pieces. It has two pieses for where the side gears were and then two that lock the side parts together. Its that way so you can get the c-clips in. FYI sometimes you have to grind down the c-clips to fit in there. It doesnt weaken them though so dont worry.:D
clreinstein 01-13-2002, 08:58 PM I looked and according to their catalog, summit only sells the mini spool for the 28 spline 10 bolt. The 10 bolt in my dads z71 got 30 splines. Does anyone make a mini spool for the 30 spline rear or would the 30 spline out of a 12 bolt fit w/ or w/o modification. I cant give up for unbeatable traction at a cheap price. Id weld the rear but if he ever wants to return it too an open diff this would be easier then installing a new carrier.

Welp I'll just have to shop around then...cuz I will be changing back to open. I take my Blazer so few times I'll just put it in before a run.
clreinstein 01-13-2002, 10:18 PM I emailed summit about possible 30 spline applications and ill let everyone know what I find out. Hey Bill4est how come you make it an open diff then put in the locker when you ise the truck?
clreinstein 01-13-2002, 10:24 PM I just found out that moser engineering sells mini spools for 30 spline 10 and 12 bolts for 100 dollars.

Well I just don't use my Blazer enough off road to keep the spool/locker in it all the time....maybe 2 times a year. My wheeling rig is my Samurai 99.999% of the time
clreinstein 01-14-2002, 05:19 PM So it would be bad to keep the spool in if the vehicle sees any street driving. Ive got a lockright in my b2 and there are no problems with driving it on the street besides the normal locker characteristics.

yea you do get some tire wear and I don't want to "feel" the locker/spool draw backs in my Blazer.....................I get enough of that in my Samurai:(
Desertdueler 01-14-2002, 05:50 PM Its fine to drive with a spool on the street. It will wear the tires out quicker than an open diff, but will take you alot more places you couldnt go before :roxy:
Jeff_Super_S 01-14-2002, 07:27 PM besides the normal locker characteristics.
Well that and the roll-over characteristics of the BII.
Does anyone know of another Co. that makes c-clip eliminators for the 12 bolt that are considered street worthy?
Cheepin 01-14-2002, 08:05 PM I don't like the C-clip eliminators. They will leak!!If your that concerned with the C-clips.Warn makes a full floater kit for the 12 bolt. These are pricey though.I would recomend you go to a 14FF.I wouldn't worry about the C-clips they are strong and don't break too often.I have had no problems with my 12 bolt.Brady
Jeff_Super_S 01-14-2002, 08:22 PM Ya that warn kit is way too much money to sink into a 12 bolt. If breakage becomes a prob. I will build a 60 for this truck. Size and weight are a factor in this truck.
colech 01-17-2002, 01:35 PM I am fairly carful with the throttle, but I have a lincon-locked 12 bolt in my K10 wheeler with 39.5x18 Mickey Thompsons and have had no trouble for almost two years!

With 33"s you dont need to worry about it anyway unless you normally jump it and leave the pedal on the floor so it hits 7K at the tach. Go with the mini spool and be done with it, you will be fine.

I have 33's now, but I'm thinking of stepping up to 36 or 38's:eek:
Jeff_Super_S 01-18-2002, 04:50 AM hits 7K at the tach.
Damn have you seen me drive before? No I don't jump my truck but I'm not afraid of the throttle either. I run a loc-right in my 12-bolt right now, and haven't had one bit of problems out of it. About a bill more than the spool, but I like the fact it can give if needed.
aaronlosey 01-18-2002, 11:50 AM i ran front and rear lockrites in my rig for years, and everytime i took the axle apart, and thought i would have to replace the little guys, they were perfect, even the little tiny springs. they are definately the most bang for the buck i ever put in my rig.
AZ Crawler 01-20-2002, 06:36 PM I run a 12 bolt welded and run it hard. No problems whatsoever. All off road of course.

Alright I'm convinced...... If you AZ guy's don't have prob's then I won't, cuz I have a light foot.
Desertdueler 01-21-2002, 07:01 PM Go with the spool, there are alot stronger than a welded rear end.
