Hey all you guys that have done power steerig swaps on your 40's here is a question. I went to my local pck a part and found many old gm cars with what looks like a pwersteering box with for monting holes bt it was only bolted to the car fram using three of the holes. will those boxes work or do i need to find something different? they were all mounted on the inside of the frame if that matters.

if those don't work where should i be looking for the right box? anyone have one for sale? thanks tim

I just converted my '71 FJ40 to power steering in November. I used an '85 Toyota 4X4 PS gearbox and an '84 Tercel 4WD hatchback wagon PS pump. This set-up is mostly bolt-on (needs a custom PS gearbox mounting bracket) and cost me about $300 for everything. It works great for me, the largest tires I'll be running are BFG 33X9.50 ATs.

Check out my write up on my web site. You can use any Saginaw 800 series box. I would look for a 4 bolt box rather than a 3 bolt box. It really doesn't matter if they only used 3 of the 4 bolts to secure the box. It is still a 4 bolt box. Next you have to check the input turns to output tunrn to see if that is the correct ratio that you want. Count how many turns it takes to move the pitman arm from lock to lock. Most SWB rigs are better off with 4 turns lock to lock, but those boxes are super hard to find. The boxes usually range from 2.5 to 4.25 turns. I think 2.5 turns is way too fast for a street driven rig. Then you have to count the splines on the input shaft. Most of the older (60s-early 70s) use a 36 spline input shaft while the later models use a 3/4" 30 spline input shaft. This only makes a difference when you go to adapt your steering column. Finally, you want an inside frame mounting steering box. Make sure the pitman arm turns the correct way as you turn the input shaft. You DON'T want a reverse rotation steering box (ie turn input to left and pitman arm turns right).

This won't help you as far as which box to grab but i have a 3.5 turn box (no clue what it is off of). It is also only a 3 bolt box. Im not sure what size bolts the saginaws have but my 3 bolts are 9/16 diameter. Holds just fine.

I also just drove a TJ yesterday and noticed it was about as touchy steering as my cruiser

If you don't have power steering I would hit the junkyard and get the cheapest saginaw box you can and go to town. You won't be disappointed.

Half off @ ecology on the 19th.(end of Lomita blvd.) there's a monte carlo straight inside the gate with the front clip off, box just waiting for you !!
Just put visegrips on the input and count the turns first.

Hey Toytech! maybe you should be a little faster with callin me names. The reference to looking stuff up probably should have been used say......yesterday before the nice people answered my question. You should spend less time drivin people and their stuff to the train station and more time patroling the board for posting violation. Ease back a little and have a  you really need it.:) :) just kiddin hope you know. lets take the wagon but it needs a SOA and some LineX berfore its first real trip out. later
