What application chevy HEI will go in a 258? I want a little help getting through emissions and I think my curve is a bit off rather than spending $$ to get it curved I want an HEI rather than points.

the ford TFI, aka Team Rush upgrade, is easy. Just change the cap and rotor for a L6 ford one. I used MSD 8.5mm wires for a '93-'97 Jeep 4.0L and 45k volt MSD Blaster 3 coil. Stock '89 4.2L coil is only 20k volts. It doesn't have the 3k RPM brick wall anymore although the engine is very loud over that and I only like reving that high if I need to scoot :rasta:

The Team Rush ignition upgrade is in detail here on the Pirate BBS. Use the search button and you should find it a heck of a lot faster than hunt and peck. You will NOT be disappointed!!! :D

If you have the money, you could go with the Davis Unified Ignition Distributor. It adapts the HEI style of distributor to almost any popular engine. The timing curve is also customized at the factory to your engine specs to ensure the greatest performance. Everyone that I have ever talked to loves this unit if you can afford the $350 price. However, since this does take the place of all other ignition pieces, this ends up being less money than buying a complete MSD ignition or the equivilant. Plus its waterproof. :) Damn now I want to go get one to.

If you can afford the DUI setup, I would do so. If you do want to build your own HEI, get the distributor setup from a late 70's GM 250 I-6 and the distributor drive gear from a (non/pre-chrysler) Jeep/AMC V-8. Put the drive gear on the HEI and pop it in your 258. Make sure to get the white power plug and brown tach plug (ones from any GM HEI will work), run key switched power to the BAT terminal (white plug) and and the tach wire (the one marked tach on the OEM coil) to the TACH terminal (brown plug) on the HEI. Set your timing where you want it and enjoy.

I had the the TFI upgrade before I had this and the performance is similar. I have slightly smoother idle and slightly increased gas milage with the HEI. The HEI cost me $30 at the local boneyard (I put the gear on it there and test fitted it in a 258 before I paid for it) and I ran it for a while with the existing cap/rotor/coil/cover before I bought new ones.

Good Luck.
