Guys, Need some help, I want to keep the stock style springs but get longer ones in the range of say 56" or so does anyone know if a 55 or 60 springs would work and what the length and width are? Or shouls I just order new springs from Alcan or others??? I currently have Old Man Emu and love the springs design just need them longer...don't want to change my front mount but will move my rear to fit the springs...

60 rear springs will work, they're wider so you need to use bushings with a thinner flange(OME),they will stretch your w/b about 3", you may need to move/reverse shackle hanger to get a good angle. 55 springs will stretch w/b more, but use bastard bushings, they're wider, but use a small O.D. bushing

Run the 55 rear springs they are 3.5" longer than the 40 springs
It will relocate the axles 3.5" from where they are right now. Unless you relocate some axle hangers...
The 55 springs work great. they flex like mad.

:D

How wide? and what's the difference in bushings....

The 55 and 60 springs are 1/4" wider so you need a bushing with a thinner flange to fit a FJ40 spring hanger. On the 60 you can buy bushings, on the 55 you need to modify them yourself.

Not true, 55 springs are the same width as 40 springs. You would just need to adapt some 5/8ths bolts to the spring hanger... Pretty easy actually. Just take your old spring pins with the wierd indexing head on them and punch out the bolt. then drill the wierd indexing head out to 5/8ths. Drill out the opposite side of the hanger and bolt it up!!! And you will probably have to move the rear shackle hanger back a bit too...

the 55 spring eyes are bigger but that is taken care of with the stock 55 bushings...

Couple more for ya...aren't the rear shackle spring 5/8's bolts? And can someone provide the measurements from the center pin to the front and back....

Stock 40 shackle bolts are less than 5/8ths (I can't exactly remember how much less, probably 1/2) However it is very common to have 5/8ths bolts on a extended shackle... On the length of the 55 springs, each side is the same length as the long side of a 40 spring. The 40 springs center pin is offset by 3.5". Measure the long side of your stock spring and that is both sides of the 55 spring...

Hey guys I just Fucked around with this swap. Its not as easy as the write-up (sorry woody) the bushings are different and the bolts are different. So after a week of fucking around this is what I came up with........

BUSHINGS

55s are bigger than a 40 but equal to a mini truck
they also have a larger pin diameter than a 40. ( 11/16 I think)
stock 40 bushings are a 9/16 hole so you have to make a shim to fit in the larger 11/16 hole.

BTW stock replacement 55 bushings are hard to find so use the ones from a mini truck.

So now I'm all confused...it would seem that a 60 would be easier to use then just redrill the spring pack about 1" or so. I am still trying to find a slightly longer spring...anybody know if a FJ45 would work with a 40 and what the length would be.

Thanks for the help....

SOR has FJ55 bushings with 9/16" ID, 5/8" ID, and stock ID (metric). I used the 9/16" ID since the shoulder was thicker on these and would last longer....the original 5/18" ID bushings I purchased lasted less than one season with the thinner shoulder. Stock 40 bushings are metric as well...the table on SOR.com does a nice job showing bushing ID, OD, and shoulder.

direct link, for those with search-challenged computers... http://www.sor.com/sor/cat289.tam?xax=6133&page%2Ectx=cat289%2Etam

FJ55 rear springs are the same width as FJ40 packs, however the spring eye and double wrap are larger. They are a tight fit in a stock FJ40 hanger. I have not tried FJ60 springs.

FJ55 rear packs are 3.5" longer with a centered pin. The long side of a FJ40 spring is the same length as both ends of a FJ55 rear pack. Installing FJ55 rear packs in the rear of a FJ40 will add 3.5" to your wheelbase. Installing FJ55 REAR packs in the front of a FJ40 will add another 3.5" to your wheelbase. Installing FJ55 REAR packs in the front of your FJ40 with a shackle reversal will not add any wheelbase.

FJ45 rear packs are about 9" longer than FJ40 packs and would require major mount work to install.

I just put 55 springs on the rear of my Cruiser. I had no problems with the bushings fitting in the spring hangers. I did need to reverse the rear spring hanger to get a better angle. Overall I thought it was pretty simple to do. Still trying to figure how to mount my shocks so I can keep my gas tank.
