: The question I hate to ask
xextr3m3 01-13-2002, 12:35 AM ok.....tranny makes gear meshing souds, like bearings(almost like a whooshing/grinding type sound) in 5th gear and just a hair in 3rd....and Ive checked the oil.......I think I already know the answer but.....
how long do you think it will go......cuz I need to make CalROCS in march
this has not been a good day in my life and this is the last thing I need:(
2FNLOW 01-13-2002, 07:16 AM :usa: Well, that sucks
Alot of Toyota trannies knock very loadly before they ultimately die, the knocking
is similiar sounding to a rod knock in some ways.
How far can you go? HMMMMM, I have seen guys get another 200+300 miles out
of them but, they where lucky and didn't care because they had another
tranny waiting for them at home.
"Ever notice parts don't die when you have their replacement at home?"
Keep driving it, listen closely to it getting louder and see what happens.
Also look and ask around to everybody for a tranny. I am sure you can find
one before March and one for a cheap price.
Good Luck!!!:usa: :usa: :usa: :usa: :usa: :usa: :usa: :usa: :usa: :usa:
xextr3m3 01-13-2002, 09:53 AM Damn this sucks....I need to atleast make CalROCS in march because of my senior project Im doing with them.....FAWK FAWK FAWK FAWK
The sound isnt a knock either.......its a constant sound that gets louder(just in 5th) that gets louder with RPM
EricZ 01-13-2002, 10:29 AM I've been running my tranny like that for the last 2 years. It's noisy and makes the sounds you described. I'm not gonna do anything until it goes. I have another tranny sitting on my garage floor awaiting a rebuild but i'm not gonna do it till the other one goes.
xextr3m3 01-13-2002, 10:40 AM ok......see I can live with this......hopefully I can still get the hook up at the tranny shop
and in the words of a wise man....Wheel it till it explodes
Skyetone 01-13-2002, 10:42 AM syncros? How far are you from marlin? He is actually reasonably priced. So are the parts guys here. Toy will run for a long time on it's "last legs" thats why we own em.
xextr3m3 01-13-2002, 11:24 AM Marlins in Fresno right....I think that is like 4-5 hours from me....I got a tranny shop I worked at, Im gunna try them first. I'd like to go all out and get the low geared turbo case but I dont think I have funds for that
xextr3m3 01-13-2002, 12:15 PM does the turbo tranny use all the same hydrolic linkage and cluth stuff as the regular carb trannies?.......cuz Im thinking about the low geared trubo unit now:D
Booger Weldz 01-13-2002, 01:10 PM my tranny has been "whining" in 3rd and 5th gear for a year or so now. i flopped in MOAB and put over 2000 miles on it 2-3 quarts low(wow-- low!), it started making grinding noises on the way to the rubicon and after i added the oil that was missing(duh) it went away, still whines though...:p :p drive it like you stole it:D :D
ToyFord 01-13-2002, 02:25 PM My guess is that in a while it will make noise in all gears except fourth. I've had a couple W56's die on me like this. I suspect a G and L series would be about the same. Most likely the input shaft bearing is going out. Replace it now and you'll save yourself having to buy another tranny (not knowing its condition either) when it busts a gear and trashes all the bearing in the box. I had one go for about 10,000 mile making noise like that, growing louder by the month before it died a nasty death. I had one go for 3,000 miles like that until it got stuck in fourth gear. You can have it totally rebuilt for about $200 labor and $200 parts if you put the tranny on the tranny shops bench, add a few hundred more if you want the shop to pull it and install it for you. May as well do the clutch while its out. BTW change the oil every 500 miles or so until you get it fixed, that way the gears and remaining bearings don't have as much metal running through them.
Chris Geiger 01-13-2002, 03:30 PM Why kill a tranny? Pull it out now and get it repaired before it's FUBAR. When mine started making noise I sent it off to Marlin for a quick overhual and had him upgrade the bearings to the larger 84-85 style.

Im just hoping it aint going to be that expensive.... I can pull the damn thing by lunch so no worries
Im just hoping for the discount cuz I used to work at the shop
GRABBER 01-13-2002, 03:39 PM Mines also been whining in 5th, for awile now. Hasent seemed to get worse yet. Crossing my fingers.:D

Gee what is that sound? It sounds like your tranny is falling out. Well lets keep going and see if it goes away. Wait I know turn up the stereo. See I fixed it.:flipoff2:
miniyota 01-13-2002, 08:20 PM mine whines. i changed the oil and there weren't any metal shavings. i've got 140,000 on it. 85'
just run it till it breaks. the old saying, if ain't broke, don't fix it!
good luck. the only trannys i've broken are on saab turbos. those suck! these toyota trannys are a lot stronger and take a lot of abuse!:D
jfriend77 01-13-2002, 08:42 PM More than likely its at least the front bearing and its very easy to replace but do it now before it tears up the rest of your tranny. I waited until mine quit and had to buy a core tranny at a rebuilders and steal the front input shaft out of it cause mine chewed off the gears. It is easy too fix and a lot cheaper now. Just pull it out, apart and throw it in the vise. Good Luck
DavidT. 01-13-2002, 08:49 PM Mine has been "whining" ever since I bought it. I can hear it mostly in 5th gear. I've put 75,000 miles on it since I've bought it...still whines like the day I bought it, may alittle bit louder. I'm expecting my engine to passout (won't be for a long time) before the tranny does.
Cable Guy 01-13-2002, 08:53 PM I would agree with the fix it now idea. If you let it go you can damage the gears and you may not have a good core. I know Marlin needs a rebuildable core when you buy one from him.
Mr. Yuck 01-13-2002, 08:59 PM if it ain't broke.......
xextr3m3 01-13-2002, 09:03 PM The the whole thing.....I dont have the money, time, or tools/skills to that.. If I knew what the hell was wrong with it, I could probibly fix it assuming no special tools
Wish I could just pull the tranny outta my only vehicle and tinker or just up and send it off somewhere but I cant...
What exactly causes this and what does it take to fix
thanx to whoever said it was easy, no im getting the urge to rip it apart:flipoff2:
Cable Guy 01-13-2002, 09:16 PM The input bearing is relatively easy to get to, my guess is that it is the one at the other end in the center of the tranny. Basically all you need is a good gear puller and a Toyota repair manual. If you have a W56 tranny that 6307 bearing is affordable. Driving around in 5th gear puts a lot of lateral pressure on that bearing. I am guessing you have around 170K or more on your tranny, just wears over time. Pretty common.
xextr3m3 01-13-2002, 10:19 PM nope....got the G54 I think 1987....last year of the carburator:(
164,000 on the odomitor
think Im just gunna pull it and have it rebuilt
