Hey Guys..

Found an 86 F250 2WD Diesel for $300, going to check it out in a few hours.

Owner says the body is clean and it runs great..he's owned it for 8 years. However he says it needs a transmission. Questions i have are:

Will a gas engine trans (C6?) bolt in?. Perhaps with swapping bellhousing?

Expensive to have the trans rebuilt? I'v heard that the trans behind the diesels had their problems, do i have other options?

If i get this rig it'll be a daily and tow rig.

Is it basically a bolt in affair to convert this to 4wd using factory parts?

Much appreciated!!

its a c6 tranny and they are very strong. i would just have it rebuilt. im sure the gas ones wont bolt up. i have a c6 in my 864x4 and it has 160000 on it. my dad has an 864x4 diesel with prolly close to 100000 all towing miles and he hasnt had a problem either. sounds like it wanst maintained, maybe it just needs a new filter and a fluid change.

I would do the rebuild, kit cost $130 without converter, and with the shift improver kit. Unless you want to make it 4wd then just get a 4wd c6. The deisels use an adapter plate to to the standard big block pattern. If you want to go 4wd let me know I should have all the parts you need.

It would be possible to bolt up a big block gas c-6 to the diesel. They use the same pattern, but the gas tranny uses 7/16" bolts to hold the bellhousing to the block and the diesel uses 1/2" so you have to drill out the hole a bit. It'd prob be easier and cheaper in the long run to just rebuild the current tranny.
