: Almost had my tow rig stolen yesterday
TurboDiesel444 05-03-2004, 09:42 AM 2002 F250 PSD 4x4 CC - Went to a company sponsored crawfish boil yesterday and when I got back to my truck, the door handle had been pryed out and the iginition fawked. Its at the shop now waiting on the insurance guy to get out there so they can start working on it. The door was dented around the door handle and scratched to hell so it will need to be repainted. Needs a new door handle with lock, trim around the iginition and a new ignition. My daughter and I had to wait nearly 4 hours before a wrecker came that could get it on the bed. It was quite impressive watching the wrecker driver manuever the truck and bed around to load my truck. My wheels were slightly turned and since I couldn't get a key in, they couldn't be straightened and it couldn't be taken out of park. By moving the truck and bed around, he got it on straight and only scrubbed the rear tires about a foot on the bed.
I would have love to have caught those fawkers in the act!!!! :mad3: :mad3: :mad3:
KrebsATM02 05-03-2004, 10:16 AM Where in texas was this?
TurboDiesel444 05-03-2004, 10:24 AM It happened at the University of Houston main campus. I backed in along a busy street and never even considered this place a threat. Then again, this is a shitty part of town. They were obviously only after my truck. Nothing inside was stolen except for some loose change. My CD's were out in the open, cell phone in the cubby, toll tag next to the change....bastards! I guess it could have been much worse, as Vincent Vega says "You just don't fuck with another man's automobile!"

Amen brother, I wonder if anyone ever does catch them in the act?
and as Willie Nelson says in Whiskey for my Men, Beer for my Horses, "take all the rope in Texas and a tall oak tree, Round up all of them bad boys, Hang'em high in the street"

mondtster 05-11-2004, 11:53 PM That is a sweet story of a guy getting what he deserves!!!!!
As for your truck, this is a great reason to get a 2 way alarm, so that you are notified as to if someone is trying to break into your truck so that you can catch him in the act...
If I were you, I would show no mercy if I caught a guy trying to steal something from me, no matter how minor it is.
GO 4LO 05-12-2004, 12:40 PM Be careful, though - unfortunately, the laws are constructed so that you are the one who gets sued if you "show no mercy if I caught a guy trying to steal something from me".
That being said, plant a knife on him and tell the cops he came after you :D.

It's Texas...you can do a WHOLE lot more in Texas than anywhere else.
Oh, and I know the area well, went to UofH and did NOT like driving through that area late at night.
BionicCruiser 05-13-2004, 09:45 PM that's why i made a homemade kill switch for mine. if i catch anyone trying to steal mine, they'll get 18" of bicep around the neck. :mad3:
Storm Trooper 05-15-2004, 12:24 PM you really need to get a two way alarm and a proximity sensor, look into the Clifford matrix 3.5 rsx, you can get it for 499 installed at best buy, the proxy will be about another 75. Best part is that it also acts as a turbo timer and remote start if you want it to, so not only does it keep your shit safe but it keeps it running good longer also. in the winter i have it set up to start my truck 5 minutes before i get up in the morning, IMHO the best mod i have done to my truck.
Can drive hard ass shit, turn the key off arm the alarm and walk away, truck runs for a few minutes to cool down and mean while i can be up to a 1/2 mile away and know if someone even stands close to my truck for to long let alone touches it :D

I want one of these. It's all set-up for diesel startups? The cool down feature sounds great too.
mondtster 05-15-2004, 10:01 PM I am actually an installer at a shop where we deal with the DEI products (Clifford, Viper, etc.) The Clifford RSX 3.5 alarm and remote start is set up for starting diesels; as they have a "wait to start" input that can be tied into the "wait to start" light on the diesel trucks. Remote starts are real nice in the winter, however I will not and would not recommend installing one on a manual transmission vehicle. Everyone I know who has installed one on their manual transmission vehicle has accidently started it with the vehicle in gear and ran it into something. Not good.
If you are interested in getting a 2 way alarm without the remote start, you can get the Clifford RSX 2.5 which is just the same without the added remote start features. Viper also has 2 way alarms which are the exact same as the Clifford ones, with just a slightly different remote design, so you can keep that in mind. I have the Viper 2 way alarm and remote start on my own vehicle and it is very nice.
The best thing about getting the 2 way DEI systems (besides the fact that your alarm will page you if someone is messing with your car) is the range on the system. My friend has the Clifford and I have the Viper and we both have well over 1/4 mi. range on them (I bet closer to 1/2 mi. in some circumstances) that the alarm will respond to.
Storm Trooper 05-15-2004, 10:20 PM umm yah i am a professional installer also and anyone with skills knows how to build an anti in gear start mod for manuals :shaking:
JeepinDoug 05-15-2004, 10:30 PM Mine's auto anyway, I shift enough with the Jeep.
ST, the only thing that scares me is some bonehead that makes crappy crimps and I end up getting my sh1t towed to be done right.
Are the installers certified for Clifford type installs. IIRC, VSE used to have a cert program...........years ago.
mondtster 05-16-2004, 08:15 AM Sure, you can build something, but for liability reasons we don't install them at the shop. If you aren't installing it yourself, I don't think you are going to find too many shops around who will put one on a manual tranny car. I know none of the shops around here will do it.

get one that is MECP certified and ask if they are going to solder all conections, i used to install at a best buy and around here they actually take it very seriously, we didnt have any half ass installers and from all the others i met it was the same game at other locations, it will most likely be a more skilled person working on it anyways, because you have to diode isolate the wait to start light. thats not hard but part timers and such usually are scared of newer nicer vehicles.

ever heard of having the customer sign a liability waiver :flipoff2:
ohh and keeping it on file
JeepinDoug 05-16-2004, 02:46 PM I just called installation at our local Best Buy (San Carlos, CA) and talked to the manager. They are MECP certified, they will solder all connections but they will not touch a diesel, liabilty concerns. He said because it has glow-plugs their install could damage my truck, without more detail.
Why do we have so many idjots in this area? The weather is the best in the whole damn world but I swear it stunts brain activity.
I'll check for Clifford authorized installers in my area, it may cost a little more but it would be worth it.
ST, thanks, do you do house calls?
Storm Trooper 05-16-2004, 05:43 PM i would gladly do a house call and as a matter of fact i have a NIB clifford 3.5 instock and i have a proximity sensor in stock, i will be down that way in a fe weeks, that is probably to long for you to wait, i am going to call that store and see what the deal is tho, depending on what they say i will PM you
Storm Trooper 05-16-2004, 06:02 PM got you all set up, just check that pm ;)
JeepinDoug 05-16-2004, 07:07 PM You the man ST!...you the man. Thx
