: build it or wheel it
trialjimny 05-04-2004, 02:13 AM hi i am a newbie,
but i think i have been around this site long enough to start my first thread.
i recognize that most of you have fabrication skills that, here where i live, are quite difficult to find even at 4x4 specialized shops.
but my point is, how often do you wheel your samurai, say in a month?
i know that building it is part of the game, but what's the deal if you spend more time under your suzuki rather than driving it on the trail?
don't get me wrong, i am just curios :)
Crab Bait 05-04-2004, 03:22 AM Not that anyone is counting here. But, in a year + you have only now posted your first thread! Get with it, and don't be shy :flipoff2:
BTW, most everyone here has lost count a long time ago :D
DevilJeep 05-04-2004, 03:27 AM There's alot of factors in that, like where you live, here in AZ we can wheel all year long, just fix it in the daytime and wheel it that night, in the summertime. wheel it in the daytime and fix it in the nighttime, winter.

DevilJeep 05-04-2004, 03:39 AM Nope I'm at work :(
DevilJeep 05-04-2004, 03:54 AM Fwkin edit doesn't work...........
Anywho............ when I get off work I'll be in the shop workin on my junk!!
Putting my engine back together and strippin the interior to get ready for spray-in liner shit in
Cahdealme 05-04-2004, 04:24 AM Seems like I work on mine a lo more than I wheel it, but it is still kind of in the build up phase, like that ever ends! But I enjoy working on it when I'm not in a have to get it done now mode.

well, i spent all this time doing some search in the BB :D
in 2000 I lived in scottsdale AZ for some time, and i knew a guy that worked one year to build his zuk only to take part to a single event (zookmelt if i remember correctly)
if i don't wheel my zuk almost every w.e. i get :mad3:
sprtn4x4cw 05-04-2004, 07:05 AM Most of the time on your wheelin' rig will probably be spent under it rather than in it...unless you aren't doing anything too extreme, at least that's what I've found to be true over the years.
SammiGrrl 05-04-2004, 07:20 AM most places to wheel around here take at least an hour of driving to get to the trail, so people who work most of their day only get to wheel on the weekends. but you work on your rig during the week, so I guess that means working on it more than wheelin it.
I have a kick that's slightly modified, and I wheel it a bit, but I haven't done any mods in a long time, so that one I wheel more than work on.
Orionn 05-04-2004, 07:47 AM I work on/wheel mine about 50/50.
Any 'good' wheeling here is 5+ hours away, so its only a weekend deal for me. but til this past season, I have not had to do much in the way of repairs. this year it's upgrades and such. So more time working than wheeling :(
I get out to wheel once a month on average :(
Sucks to live in Michigan, in the city. :barf:
sbutter21 05-04-2004, 11:30 AM I wheel my Sami more then work on it. I find that wheeling it helps me understand what I want to do with it next. I also like to get use to my mods after making them, and the best way to do this is by wheeling it.
I suppose if i were doing something more drastic like building a rock buggy or a diesel swap I'd be working on it more then wheeling it, but those things are down the road a ways for me.
fatkid 05-04-2004, 11:57 AM Before I needed a trailer to get my rig around I used to wheel it aleast 5 times a month. Now that it takes truck and trailer to get to point A to B I hardly feel like going through all the trouble, too much like work.
XJOSHX 05-04-2004, 02:27 PM I bet you miss the 5 times a month days
fatkid 05-04-2004, 02:59 PM I bet you miss the 5 times a month days
You wouldn't believe how much! I miss it so much that I think about building abother Zuk like I used to have, however I can't stand having a ton of unfinished projects taking up space. :)
XJOSHX 05-04-2004, 03:15 PM I think thats why I will always stick to my rigs being streetable. Nothing like hanging with a few friends then jsut deciding to hop in the woods for a quick blast. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have an expensive bad ass trailor queen that is so crazy it amazes you but I think (for me) it is straying away from what I love. They are so bad ass it is tempting though, but street driven is where it is at for me!
316atO 05-04-2004, 05:49 PM Anyone here Daily drive their zuk??
DevilJeep 05-04-2004, 05:54 PM I know several people in az that do.......
sewerzuk 05-04-2004, 05:58 PM I usually get out about once a week, but the wheelin is close...I don't have to drive much of anywhere to find good trails.
I guess if you added up all of the time I spend under my rig, it would work out to about 50/50 wrenching/wheeling.
I would spend more time under it, but my wife limits my shop time  and the $$ I can spend. I've found the trick to getting new equipment though; I just break whatever I want to upgrade, and then she can't argue :D
sbutter21 05-04-2004, 06:47 PM Anyone here Daily drive their zuk??
I do when it's not above 90*. When it's above 90 I like my AC.
Although lately I've been driving my RAM because, well, it's new and I enjoy driving it. :D
I want to keep my Zuk streetable as long as possible.
jerseyzuks 05-04-2004, 06:56 PM In reply to "Anyone here Daily drive their zuk??"
Yup. Whenever I can (read - as long as it's in one piece)
I really love taking it out when it's 75-80 degrees outside, especially those cool nights in the summer. No top, no doors.
rezuked 05-04-2004, 07:09 PM I've had my Sam maybe a couple of months at most, I've taken Suzuki out... I'd say no less than 5 times. I don't get it... I have a lifted Cherokee that will just walk through things that has the Suzuki struggeling..... I'm getting to the point I think it's funny to get high centered with both drive wheels digging air... especially when I make my wife hang on the coners for ballast till I can get traction. The most funny thing is the looks on peoples faces when I make it all the way up a trail in my bone stock sam (down to the p205 whitewalls) that they had to ride a cable to get through.
To answer the question.. thhe only wrench turning I've done on my Suzuki has been changing the spark plugs... and I drive it to work almost every day... mud and all. :smokin:
Wheel that bitch as it is, just pick your lines and keep the rocks away from anything vital!
TheNerple 05-04-2004, 08:06 PM Tiss the season to be buildin'.... Oh but wait tiss also the season to be wheelin'! Such a situation. Get yourself one to build and one to wheel! Works for me!
trialjimny 05-05-2004, 02:30 PM Before I needed a trailer to get my rig around I used to wheel it aleast 5 times a month. Now that it takes truck and trailer to get to point A to B I hardly feel like going through all the trouble, too much like work.
this is the reason i chosed to stay on a 31"/low tcase/lockers set up.i enjoy more wheeling it than building it and repairs:barf:
i also enjoy driving it home after a day on the trail
