: Anyone in california go to carnegie?
CheepJeeper 01-13-2002, 02:20 PM Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone in california has every gone to carnegie in livermore. I know it is mostly for dirtbikes but havce 4x4 stuff too. What is it like and is it worth an hour drive to go there? thanks everyone:D
M.Martian 01-13-2002, 02:53 PM I live near there. It's about a 20-30 minute drive from my house to get there. It's a ways off of the freeway on a semi-windy road so it takes a little bit to get there.
I only use it as a testing ground pretty much because there's not much for four wheelers there. You cannot go on any of the hills and are pretty much limited to the valley floor. There is a little obstacle course there with a really easy frame twister. There is also a section of boulders which is pretty extreme (I haven't tried it - rig's not ready for it). The motorcycles are pretty irritating there. You have to really watch out for them because they don't.
If you are in the area and want to mess around then it might be worth it. Usually I go there if I want to get a quick break in and don't want to drive 2+ hours to Hollister.
CheepJeeper 01-13-2002, 04:02 PM That is the closest "legal" place to me,would it be good for me? Im just starting out. Anyone know of any places in clayton,ca?
The Joker 01-13-2002, 04:18 PM I live close also. If you like mud it is ok after a good rain. I use it to check out stuff on my Runner as well. The motorcycle loading ramps make decent RTI ramps and the rock area is short but worth it if you never have tried the playing in the rocks.

Yeah, it would be a good place to get started out in. It typically gets used by some of the people here because it is the closest "legal" place to go for those of us in the tri-valley area.
It's funnest after a rain though.
CheepJeeper 01-13-2002, 04:49 PM Ok, thanks everyone. What are the minimum things I should have to go there(if anything at all). Like tow hooks, are those even necessary for that place?:jeep:
The Joker 01-13-2002, 04:58 PM If you go after a rain you may want to bring someone along with you in case you get stuck. The mud is very slick. The rock area is narrow so if you get into a bad spot you should be able to drive out the side of it.
CheepJeeper 01-13-2002, 05:40 PM ok thanks

You should always have at least one tow point front and rear. If it has been raining, then mud tires will be better, but you should be fine with anything.
I have some pics on my websites from Carnegie that you can get an idea of how the terrain is there.

jdjanda 01-13-2002, 09:23 PM Where you at in Concord? Drop me a line, I'll let you know when we go on another run to Frank Raines or Hollister.
Joe
CheepJeeper 01-14-2002, 03:13 PM I live over by De La Salle(high school) and I go there too....thanks for the invite. What kind of rigs do you have(might have seen you around)?
I am from Pleasant hill. Carnegie ain't worth the drive.
CheepJeeper 01-14-2002, 04:20 PM So then where do you go?
For longerish trips we goto placerville, and for shorter trips (10 min max) we out to martinez, lafayette, moraga and P Hill. Most of these spots we don't goto any more because they ain't legit any more. There have been trails in these places since before the 70's and no one cared that we wheeled there but now all the damn politicians say we can't (legal BS about liability). It has gotten really bad within the last 2 years. Your best bet is to get freinds with property (where i go now in the bay area). And just hold off till you get a bad enough urge and go hit the con or something.
CheepJeeper 01-14-2002, 05:05 PM Is there even one place around here worth going to(less than an hour)?
CheepJeeper 01-14-2002, 06:49 PM Also do they have air stations there? I dont have a compressor for if I had to air down my tires. Thanks

CheepJeeper- Hook up with Joe. He'll get you into plenty of trouble!
hehehe- j/k!
But really, Carnegie is for bikes! I rode there for about 15 years and the only place you can take a 4x4 is at the base in and around the creek bed. You'll get board fast.
You might also want to consider going to Prairie (sp?) City out near Rancho Cordova and Folsom. It's an OHV park (like Carnegie) but it has a much larger area for 4x4's. It's only about 1.5 hours from you and you'll probably meet up with others from the BB on any given weekend.
Sounds like you're new to the sport so let me give you some advise- make sure wherever you go, make sure it's LEGAL. We all need to work to help clean-up our image with the general public.
We'll be making a snow run up to Iron Mtn near Pollack Pines in a couple of weeks. You're welcome to join us. Keep watching the Gen 4x4 forum for updates.

Hollister has air hoses at the lower ranch entrance
Carnegie has 1 air hose over at one end of the park, opposite side from the 4x4 course.
Me and a buddy are going dirtbiking there sunday

Who me? That's why I need you along to keep me out of trouble.
CheepHeep (SP), you’re pretty close to me, you'll see me running around in a gold/white Scout.
Carnegie, is like everyone says, bike city. The 4 wheel drive area is usually full of little kids on bikes, plus their parents giving you dirty looks. It's a crapshoot between HH, PC, and Raines. They are all about 2 hours out. There is also another up by Lake Berryessa, Knoxville. I would suggest taking a trip to Carnegie get your feet wet, then a trip to HH or PC for an extended day. Do as Rubi suggested and learn and live Tread Lightly.

I'm not in any clubs, but would be willing to go out there and give a hand making it better. I know there was talk a while back of someone talking with a ranger there about making it better but haven't heard anything since.
I live over off First and would love to see things change for the better there. Usually I will go there if I need to test a mod or something.
LOPPY 01-15-2002, 01:24 PM Hence the reason I refuse to live anywhere near the bay area. I gladly left Santa Rosa for the same reason. Every inch of land is fenced off, gated somehow off limits. Very sad to see this happening to our world. :(

Yeah, I think it'll make it, I should have a couple of runs left before the auto lets go :D Almost done with the OBA, but I'll still be running the SUA. If Josh C is not done with the SOA I might be able to use his 35's, else I'm run'n the 32's. How does Feb 2 work? Anyone else up?

It would be nice to have a reason to go there. I'd be willing to put some time in, maybe twice a year we all head over for maintenance? Couple of things I'd like to see, an improved obstacle area, with some type of rules regarding bikes in the 4wd area. I don't like the looks I get from the parents because I'm driving a rig around in the 4wd area, never mind that there are at least two areas for the kids. Second, maybe a 'built' trail that runs the length of the valley, or a loop around the park with obstacles throughout the run for a mini trail run through the park.

CheepJeeper 01-15-2002, 02:48 PM Sounds like you guys have some good plans for the place:D Im up for helping too

1uglyranger 01-15-2002, 07:50 PM Hey Cheap heep, drive your cute little YJ out Morgan Territory, and try to get lost...... Just watch for ranchers with shotguns!!!!:mad3:
The one time I went to Carnige(I know I spelled that wrong) all the bikes were following me around, watching me run over everything, it was kinda fun....it was like they had never seen a 4x4 before!!! But I got bored really quick, and the motorcycle loading dock was a cool RTI ramp, till I got closer, and realized how short it was:( , They need to make one twice as tall.:D
Last I heard they had just purchased about 1000 acres(a year ago) and they were going to expand the 4x4 park....not gonna hold my breath.
Welndmn, shoot me an e-mail if anything changes with that place, and the park, if you need an extra set of hands, or a vote, I'm here!!
Brian--
CheepJeeper 01-15-2002, 08:56 PM wow there is alot more people in this area than I thought! Yea I will probably try carnegie lack of any better places to go, but hopefully this fixing it up idea will get off the ground

Yeah they have new land (i think 2 years old is still new) but they never did anything with, its right by the 4x4 course, between the 2 hill, in a valley, but no 4x4's are allowed back there right now
And yes part of my plans were to make an RTI ramp and give to them after i am done with it and my friends are done with it
that place sucks holister is way better dont waste your gas or time:smokin: :smokin:
