Hello, I have a 94 1/2ton Dodge Ram with the 318 and a auto tranny. On my way back to school, the drivers side axle u joint decided to go. Unforuntualy, this took out the yoke for the axle shaft. :( I have 220000 miles on the truck and was woundering how do I identify my axles and or ones to replace it.I was woundering about swaping a 3/4 ton or 1 ton axle front and rear. Which ones will work and what wont? I plan to atleast run 38 inch tires when I get done with the truck but right now I am running 31's or 265/75/r 16. Any help would be greatly appreaciated.

As for new axles (bigger) don't waist your time with anything other than a 60 if you are going bigger than a 35". You can get a kingpin 60 out of any one ton 93 and older. They can be had for about a grand. Fix yours and then when you get a 60 for the front sell it to offset the cost, as you will need coil bucket and stuff.
As for how to id yours, look for a BOM # on the axle tube.

1 ton axles are gonna be the way to go. Don't mess around lookin for 3/4 ton parts. Dana 70, Sterling 10.5 or a 14 bolt in the rear and a Dana 60 or a new AAM axle up front. If your keepin coils, you have to find the mounts for them like rockmup said and you will also have to do research on arms and steering. My truck sits around 13 inches of lift all together including the body lift which I will eventually take off. I have pleanty of room to clear 38s w/ 16x10 inch wheels. My truck also has a 318 and runs 4.88 gears. It does ok but I need more power. -chris

That 60 you mention has the wrong side drop doesn't it? He needs a driver side drop for that 94. The Ford 78-79 HP 60 is what he wants. That wswap has been covered extensively (both talked about and actually done) many times by guys on my site.

Yes it is, but its the right width. so you get the sides swaped and your done. HP's are expensive and they are too wide unless you get both axles

And lose the red font. too hard to read.

what about the hubs... which years are the crappy ones? Gotta admit though, a HP unit would be much nicer with lots of lift.

The HP 60 isnt wide enough for the coil buckets to be mounted at the same width as the factory axle. You have to move the buckets inward 1/2" on each bucket, or raise the bucket to clear the kingpin.

Look for 00 up Dana 60 from a Dodge. Larger shafts and dual piston calipers. Mid 02 Dana 60 dont have a CAD unit

So I shouldnt do the king pin? My truck is pretty gutless witht he 318 and I know Im going to have to go in to gearing and want lockers and all that good stuff. It sounds like a Dana 60 woudl be the easiest. Iam looking for something I can get that will set in place with out to much work, and also be able to make mods latter. I have been told that I can fit 3/4 and 1 ton coils under my truck with no problem, they will bolt right up. Is this true with the axles? If I found a 94-02 axles they would bolt right up? Does anybody know of places that I can find information about this stuff? You guys are helping greatly though. thanks. Also, I read on the site that, I have a 5 link front end , not a 4, is this because of the track bar?

Unless you have been doing alot of work on that truck, probabally alot of it is worn out. My sugguestion is instead of fixing it and making it a wheeler, just get another cheaper truck to wheel. These rams cost alot for parts.

I agree - that's what I did. Got ma a '77 M880 to wheel & kept my "97 ram to cruise.

I have noticed that the Rams cost alot to fix, but I love it. I love showing everyone up with the truck. Is there any place that I can look more information up on axles and stuff? I do plan on doing alot of modification to the truck down the road (after college) but right now I just need to get it fixed cause its my daily driverand tow truck for my jeep. Is there any performance places for the Rams? again, thanks for the help
