: SOA and Tolerances
GOFER 01-13-2002, 03:57 PM I have never really heard anyone talk about tolerances concerning suspension geometry.
I just got finsihed this weekend doing an SOA Leaf conversion on my TJ. Now it's straight front to back but I'm sure I'm about 1/8" to 3/16" off to one side. I'm going to leave it that way for now, it measured in but once everything was said and done it looks off. I'm curious do new trucks (leaf sprung etc...) come out of whack like that I know they have huge tolerances on body panels and such.
"The nagging little perfectionist part of my brain which is very small is wondering"
Is 1/8" or 3/16" off to one side going to really matter I'm thinking not but perhaps a little reassurance would ease my mind.
Thanks

Wtf is CA always needing to be greased and or have bushings changed. Biggie is the rear steer because of the high angle of the CA.
Also add sagging ass passenger side coil because of the torque.
And just too many damm things moving back there.
Prelim measurements on the leafs show me with about 12" to 14" of travel just as much with coils. Leafs are sturdy low tech ad durable as hell.
Me and my wife both have TJ's dealing with the CA thing is about a pain in the arse, I don't want to run some sort of long arm setup so leafs it be.

Let me get this straight, Your TJ has rear steer AND you swapped leaves under it?!?!
That's the first time I've heard of that being done

Are you familar or heard of all the handling quirks that come up with a lifted TJ suspension?
It comes down to this I wated something back there that's simple reliable and won't gimmie no fuss.
Work in progress

LOL...
Gotta agree, seems like a lot of work, but hey, leaf springs work too
so is there a complete TJ rear susp in the for sale section now??
JEEP_TJ_FREAK 01-14-2002, 07:54 AM I am doing the same thing to my TJ, it really is the cheapest and easiest way to swap rears. You also don't have to do a bunch of other stuff that prohibits going back. Mine is an interim thing as eventually I will figure out where I want to go then change to that.
My SOA conversion (3/4 elliptic) uses all stock junkyard YJ crap and so the complete cost is about what the joints for the 4 link plan are.
It sounds to me like your thrust angle got jacked up, go get an alignment and see what they say before you start torching stuff off. You need to be precise when welding up the perches and spring hangers, if not you will wind up doing it again.
It looks to me like you put the shackle in the stock YJ location, how much height did you get out of yours? Which coils are you running up front? Regrets?
Scout Dude 01-14-2002, 08:00 AM I totally understand what you mean...my buddy has a TJ with 4" coils...it sux on the street...feels like you are riding on slinkys. If I had one, I would put leaves under it...or coil overs and a better link design..and new axles...and a new...:flipoff2:
krcruiser 01-14-2002, 08:14 AM As i understand it as long as the drivetrain is square to itself, other than athestics, it really doesn't matter if the drivetrain is square to the body. I'm in the process of finishing my SOA and I figure that if the axles are with in a 1/16 square to each other and the motor than if the whole body and frame are shifted off a little it doesn't really matter. With that said I still am trying to get it to look centered.
One oy my friends teaches collision repair and he says that it's not unheard of for drivetrains of new cars to be off 1/16 - 3/16, but the wheels are always square in relation to each other.
aaronlosey 01-14-2002, 08:46 AM he he, i think i'll go post in the rover forum now, cause this is just plain wacky
aaronlosey 01-14-2002, 09:07 AM to do list:
build TJ
smoke crack
:flipoff2: :flipoff2:
DAVID 01-14-2002, 09:24 AM $20,000 TJ + TORCH + :smokin: CRACK = YJ

That's the GOSPEL truth if I've ever heard it.
Look everyone I've got a limited edition post '97 YJ
Don't get me wrong I think it's very cool and looks well done.
i dont see why youre busting his balls so much, lots of people have been doing it the past couple of years....kinda a direct copy of the XJ setup from the factory. and if he's getting his desired flex and preformance at a fraction of the cost.....who's :smokin: crack then? the guy getting perfomance at low cost?
:flipoff2:
DAVID 01-14-2002, 01:12 PM LOW COST? DID YOU FORGET THE ORIGINAL PRICE OF A TJ?
LOW COST IS FINDING A YJ ALREADY WITH LEAFS!

Cost?
11 grand out he door bubba.
I could have bought a decent YJ for what 5 or 6 grand and it would have had how many miles? Most likely not the 20 K that I got the TJ for it now has 60 K so it's got lot's of life left.
Plus my wife drives a TJ and it saves cost on buying spare stuff.
If I went the YJ route it might have been cheaper but not all that cheaper after I got done replacing everything that was wore out.
I aint bitchin about road manners we have been wheeling the TJ's for almost 3 years now, it's just time for a change.
BTW my rig before the TJ was a "cheap 83 Toyota" that most likely cost more than I care to think if I were to add up reciepts.
You don't like Leafs on a TJ:flipoff2:.
It works for me get a TJ lift it drive it around, if you like what you feel then enjoy.
You got an answer to my question or or you just gunna bust my balls an make crack jokes?
3/4tonYJ 01-14-2002, 04:06 PM i hear ya about TJ rear steer, i call it "torque steer" and if you got lift with factory lenght control are and V-8 horsepower your TJ will have some. i know someone that wrecked because of it........
anyway, are you talking about your wheelbase is different left/right side? if your wheels are straight, i'd say 1/8" is fine.
post some pics if you got some...........

Ya passenger to driver side that is what I was asking about, front to back it's dead on according to the tape. I'm hearing that 1/8" is better than most so I guess I did otay.
I have brakes, shocks, wrap bar all the little goodies etc left but it's sitting on the leafs now, here are a few of the pics
