: Hard hitting when starting

A friend of mine has a 78 Cruiser with a stock motor with the exception of a Weber carb. When he first starts it, it seems to be hitting kind of hard, like it's getting combustion in the middle of the up stroke. After it starts it runs smooth. He's replaced the distributor in an attempt to correct it already, and mechanically (timing, flywheel, starter, etc.) seems to be in great shape. Any ideas?

Thanks

Normally I'd agree (I've got a 73), but this just started doing it. It was running good before, even at startup.

i thought 78 would have been a 2F.

78 S/B a 2F. Why'd you dump the Aisen carb? Pretty difficult to diagnose with limited info.... details, details. what have you done to it since it ran good?

Nothing. It was running good when it was shut off after the last trail ride. Next time he went to start it, it started doing this crap. And the only problem is when it starts.

I thought at first that it might be out of time, but it's right on when using a light. The fly wheel and starter are in good shape, and it now has a new distributor as well...he replaced the dist. trying to fix the problem but no good. He also said that all the timing gears look good.
