: flat towing the Serious One - a new problem...

Serious One

I'm driving to SLC this afternoon and I want to flat-tow the Serious One behind the CrewCab. No problem right? I've done it a dozen times before right?

Well, I hook it up and go for the 'round-the-block' test tow, and a new problem has risen it's ugly head.

When I go into a turn and then go to turn out of it, the vehicle being towed wants to plow to the side and won't straighten it's front wheels out normally.

On the Serious One (the vehicle in question), I recently removed the caster-corrected radius arms for some that are not corrected at all. The prior arms that were on the truck were corrected to 3 degrees of positive caster. Now there is no correction and the steering is skittish when driving it.

I am ASSUMING that the lack of caster is failing to allow the wheels to self-center.

In an attempt to rectify the problem I have put check straps on the steering wheel so as to not allow it to turn too far into the turn and start to plow.

I *theoretically* could swap out the radius arms AGAIN, but the arms I took off the S1 are now on the CC, which would, essentially, make it a straight swap across.

I don't have the time (honestly) to do it. Too much other shiat to deal with, so I'm hoping that this won't be a problem.

I don't think it will be that traumatic to the S1, but it does put additional strain on the bulkhead when the wheels want to turn and the straps don't let it.

I'm looking for some thoughts and/or feedback.

Thanks!

Bungee cord the steering wheel straight..

It works and is easy

I did it a bunch of times when I had longer shackles on the front of my cruiser and the caster was all screwed up.

Rent a car dolly from U-Haul. Tell 'em you're towing a VW Beetle.

Use straps to compress the fron suspension on the Serious One thereby correcting the geometry for the tow??

that's a pretty good idea. You could use your winch to suck it down.

I'll come out and do the swap Mike. Airfare, expenses and a stripper for Shop Boy would about cover it!

Maybe the new shoc mounts would help.
