Huge Bummer!

Exactly why I have a hard time with the Klune and the Rock Box that are coming for Cruisers.

YOU STILL HAVE THE CRUISER T CASE!!!

Ouch...sorry that happened.

What is your plan now?

Couldn't agree more, Nolen, I really doubt that the 3-speed transfer cases are going to survive the addition of a crawler box for a long period of time. Bruce Miller turned a 3-speed t-case into slush at Moab last year.

Of course, you can opt for a billet t-case housing, but $$$$$$.

Split transfer-case, baby, all the way!

It was a 4spd tcase. (http://www.birfield.com/~morgan/tech/Bruce_Millers_dead_tcase-med.jpg)

I have been thinking about what I'd do if I broke the 4spd tcase I've got now, behind the NP203. I will line up a spare. I am thinking about a split tcase, but I wonder if it would really be stronger naked versus the 4spd tcase I've got now with Don Anway's saver plate across the top and John Pardi's saver plate across the back.

It would give me lower gears...

You can see pics of both Anway's and Pardi's savers here (http://www.birfield.com/~morgan/tech/GRB/) .

That sucks! I've never seen the front output housing break off before! Put that on the wall in your garage!

I am hoping the 38mm split cases are a lot stronger!!! I broke a non split 4spd case driving on pavement with a mildly built 2F, and stock '76 FJ40 gearing... It split in half and landed on the skid plate. I am sure people will disagree with me on this but I firmly believe that the three speed cases are stronger housings than the non split 4 spds. I have tossed out about 4 or 5 broken 4 spd housings over the past few years(I did not break them all myself) and havent broken a 3 spd housing. Maybe it's just luck, but that's my experience... I just jinxed myself, but I yanked the non split cases altogether in favor of a 38mm idler split t-case.

Been there done that with a 3-speed case. Parts fell to the groud when I removed the skid-plate. Snapped the rear pinion at the same time.:(

It seems to me that all these x-cases snapping have one thing in common........Small Block power plants.........Just another reason I love my stroked 2F. I don't see the need for that much HP in a Cruiser.......:flipoff2:

I believe that Bruce Miller was running a 2f  :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

If it wasn't happening behind 2F's then why would toyota have seen the need to keep increasing t-case strength throughout the years?

now a 20r might keep you from breaking t-cases:eek:

I broke mine in half as well as I was tooling down the freeway. The case did not come apart, but started grinding like a mad man. Came home, tore it out threw a new one in and blew that one up a few months later. SUCKY

I am considering a split case swap but I am not convinced on the strength as of yet. I know it is stronger.....but how much stronger....marginally?. So, I ask the question

has anybody broken, or observed the breaking of a split style transfer case?

Especially an 1985 and later case?

I am also interested in the answer to the question posted earlier...is a split case stronger than an early case with steel reinforcement brackets?

Appreciate any input so I can make up my damn mind:smokin:

I only went wheeling 3 times this summer and witnessed three 3-speed cases cracking right up the idler. Two rigs had the t-case saver. All trucks had 36+ swampers. One truck had a sloppy 2f.

Spare tcases are too heavy to haul around.............

Ok, something I know the answer to. Up until early '71 - '73... some 3 spd T-cases were brittle, also called a soft t-case, like pot metal. '71 through '73 they mixed manufacturers, so some are good and some not. The easy way to tell is to look at the drain plug, if it is flush then its a soft case if it has a "raised ridge" around it then it's a better case. Newbie for life....

yes I have broke that piece.

I was climbing a sand dune locked
front and rear full throttle front
started bounceing and it was all over.

what amazes me is that the shaft in that houseing
holds up.

after rebuilding a case I felt that the front
out put shaft was under size.

i'm pretty sure danny (warden's) sells a billet front output housing. he showed me an example about a year or so ago. anybody tried that?!;)

In a few months there may be another option. That Cast Iron case which is not EXCLUSIVE TO MAF may be getting a 4:1 gear set and an option to mate to a split case. All prototypes so far. we will see......

(and that's all I heard, not who, what, where, how, why...)

this is an offset case isn't it?
look into a rover lt-230
bomber case and 3.3 low range stock!
not to mention 1.2 high range which makes bigger tires and 4.10's work real nice

This is the first timeI have heard of any one
recomending a Rover case.

any pics ? any one seen the inside of one ?

as far as the cast iron case wardens has claimed
to have one for sale real soon for at least
a year.

Did I mention that wardens lied to me 5 times
in a row.

the rover cases are pretty darn big and burly
makes a dana 300 look like a toy
and they have the offset you want
trick would be bolting it to your tranny but a buddy of mine is working on adaptors to most truck 4 speeds
what tranny are you running?

There's always the SPicer Model 18 too.
think it's 2.52 low and you can get lower gears sets - correct offsets...
