Hello All,

I am new with engines and stuff when it comes to cars. Got a lot of catching up to do..

I am going from a 350 V8 to a 2002 4.3 V6. I need a reference source for issues that are to come - where do I go ??? Is there a manual or a guide like one some offered for other models at www.V8S10.com

At this point I need a source where I can get headers and maybe an engine mounting kit. Attached here are pics that show engine mounts currently in it with the V8. Thanks for your input.

Having a hard time with pics .. Here is the link ..

What is your intent with this swap? Seems like a step backwards to me. If your main goal is to get fuel injection... why not leave the headers, motor mounts, all accessory drives, etc alone and get a fuel injection kit for your small block? Seems like less money and less work to me. Just a though. Luke

Give advanced adapters a call. They'll have want your looking for. You can also check out man-a-fre. I've seen the 4.3l done on another rig, looks and performs great

I fully agree. That 4.3 is a worthless POS in my opinion. Keep the V8 and get a TPI for it.

I already have the new engine. Kinda tired of the V8 - really sucks gas with the hot cam. around 6 MPG. I wont mind using this as a daily driver ..

What kind of miles per gallon are we talking if i get the regular cam in ??? Thanks

assuming a carbed 350, that puts you at 1986-older..the 2002 4.3 is likely to have a different pattern to the bellhousing, so you are looking at a tranny swap. Add in sensors, catalytics and such for smog, and a PILE of wiring fun, and it may end up cheaper to swap cams for $200 and hope for a few more MPG.

I'll bet 99% of people who swap motor for fuel reasons end up money behind...gotta drive LOTS of miles to make up for fuel costs. (tho, 6mpg does suck...lol)

compcam extreme torquer series is nice, no lope, good offidle, and driveable. 800rpm-4600rpm driveability.

Alrady have the new tranny - torque converter and most other goodies ...

That cam is no joke, my bones ache after a half hour drive ... :(
Sitting on lights and stop signs people look at me funny, guess it is funny see a guy bounce .. Then I set off all car alarms and wake up the neighbourhood with it every time
It was fun when I baught it, now the novelty has worn off - I still love the FJ

I would never swap a 350 for a 4.3, however I would not call the 94 and newer 4.3 a POS, I have several cutomers with 300k on them and still going strong, I have one coupled to a T350 deciding on what to install it into now, a buggy or my FJ45 PU.....theyare a very popular swap with Butch Lewis (butchbuilt) and his customers in FJ40's

Just talked to Butch .. I will be driving up sometime this week to get an estimate. If he is reasonable I will use him.

The 4.3 is a pretty good motor. There are quite few 40s running around with them. It makes running an auto in a 40 easier. You can tuck the motor up closer giving you long driveshafts. One guy I know has a TBI 4.3 and he gets in the low to mid twenties for mpgs. Another guy has the newer Vortec 4.3 and he is getting in the upper 20s.

I put a 4.3 vortec in my 1980 fj40 a year ago and used the motor mounts from advanced adapters. No header yet.
I pulled the motor and a 4l60e auto. trans from a wreck and did the swap at home.
I've driven this set up for about 8 months now and am satisfied that it will work well for
most situations. I have stock LC axles with 4.88 gears and 35" tires. Also stock tcase. This motor is a sweet match for my set up. I understand why more folks want the v8 but this is ample power for what I like to do. Good luck.

yeah, I love my Butch Lewis inspired 4.3 swap. Sometimes I wish it had more power going up long grades, but when on the trail, its great. As my daily driver for 7 years with that motor, it was great too. (Daily driver is why I didnt do a 350). Anyway, I dont think you'll be way bummed on the swap. Youre not going to do wheelies with it, but can get damn close when in 4low and gear it through an SM420. I use a half tank or less of gas through the Rubicon.

I'm calling BS on the mileage claims. We had 4 in service here at work, not one ever got about 16 mpg. My wife had a 99 blazer that weighed in less than my cruiser in stock form and once in it's life (Driving to so cal, down highway 5 with a tail wind) saw 18mpg.

I stand by my feeling that the V8 is a waaaaaaay better choice in motors for the little less mileage that it gets in a FJ40

Why The BS on mileage.. If it's geared right and you keep out of the skinny pedal..

Heck I can get 15-16 with my V8J 62 and it's only running on 6 out of 8 cylinders. That's running about 70-75 with 35" tires. And my motors sicker than a dog! I could easily see a 4.3 v6 getting 20+. Specially geared right.
But I would like to hear more.. I'm not totally saying BS to your BS but I know Butch Baker and Eric Vogt pretty darn well.. And they don't BS when it comes to motor swaps.. Both of them have more than their fair share of Cruiser wrenching under their belts.. ..
So.. You 4.3 guys step up to the plate! we wanna hear about your swaps..
Shoot.. THis could be as good a thread as that supra motor swap one! :)

I'm averaging 20mpg with my 4.3 vortec.

It's not just about the fuel economy to me although it is twice as good as my worn out 2f was. The fuel injection is way up on the list. My cruiser can sit for 3 weeks and fire right up now and before with the 2f and weber it was lots of crankin' and hoping my battery was up for it. My idea is that the 4.3 wouldn't overbear the stock drivetrain components like I have seen so many times with the v8s.
Everyone needs at least one machine with lots of horsepower that you can get that special thrill from. Maybe its your car or motorcycle, four wheeler or jet ski or your 4x4.

I'll be at the Razorback Ramble in June and anyone that wants to test drive an FJ40 with the 4.3 is welcome to give it a spin, within reason.

I am thinking I average mid to upper teens (maybe 15 - 18) with my TBI'd 4.3, SM420, 4:11's, 3speed t-case, and 33's. Only motor mod I have is an aircleaner that breaths much better than stock. Also am running my (way lighter than hardtop) soft-top too.
MGP is (obviously) very dependant on how I drive it. Around town and down the freeway I tend to be a little hard on the gas. On the trail though, when I am idling around, I get way better.
