OK - I've got a couple d44 rears, and a couple D60 rears laying in the shop. I've been planning on building a fullfloating D44 using a scout rear and some front D44 splindles and hubs.
I was just looking at the 60 floater and had a strange Idea. Any reason I couldn't use the 60 spindles and hubs? That would mean I wouldn't have to neck down the axles on the hub side.
Just thinking out loud, feel free to tell me why this is a stupid Idea.
BTW, putting the complete 60 in the rear is really out of the question. I'd be giving up too much ground clearance, and my flatty only weighs about 2400 lbs anyway.

would be real easy if you wanted to run 8 lug, might be more work to run 6-5 lug. i say definatly go for it.
a 30 sp shaft will fit through a D44 spindle with clearance, just remove the bearing from the inside of the spindle.... the 19sp stub is the same diameter as a 30sp

I'll have to look at some jeep spindles then. The spindles and stubs I was looking at were from a scout D44 (27 spline outers), which must run smaller.

I guess the two biggest questions are:
Do you mind running 8 lug? and Do you want Hubs for flat towing? If the answer is no and no then I sure don't see why it's a bad idea.

I want to stay 5 on 5.5, but redrilling the hubs doesn't bother me. I would like to be able to run locking hubs, but that shouldn't be a problem, they make hubs for 60's - don't they?
If DSI is correct, and a non-necked 30 spline D44 shaft will fit through a non-scout spindle, then that solves my problem, and I can just sell the 60 to one of the local mudders.

I thought the hub was too big to fit through the center of a 5 on 5.5 wheel.

Are we talking about front 60 hubs or rear 60 hubs? They do make lockouts front 60 hubs, but I've never seen or heard of a lockout that will work with a rear 60. Will a front 60 hub (not the lockout) fit a rear 60 spindle? Will a 44 hub? If so, that solves the problem too.

I think that is correct. I have compared the 19 spline shaft with a 27 spline shaft and it's definately bigger.
