Im using the rear from a 72 ford f100, its a 9" 28spline and i have to use a 3/4" wrench to remove the axle retaining plate nuts. I was under the assumption it was a large bearing but i bought some large bearing wheel bearings off ebay and the inside ring was too small for my axles. I ended up just getting some from autozone by my year model but was wondering. Thanks, i searched and haven't come up with an answer. Hope it hasn't been covered over and over and im missing it.

I've got one out of about the same year (i think mine is a 74, 28 spline) and it's a BB..
what do you mean by the inside ring was too small? it wouldn't fit over the axle or it was too small for the housing?

Sorry i said that wrong the inside ring was to big, im thinking the bearings i got were meant for a 31s axle and they were to big for my axles but the right size for the housing. thanks for the help

OK, first off let me give you my disclaimer. This info is from a site (which I now can't find) that had lots of 9" info. Since I can't find the site, I'm going from memory, but I'm pretty sure my facts are straight.
Basically, there are three different bearings.
First is the "big bearing" housings which use a 3/4" socket on the axle flange nuts and have the large OD and large ID for 31 spline axles. These were mainly in the mid to late 70's and 80's F-150s, and a few of the land barges.
Second was the "mid-sized" bearing housings which used the 3/4" nuts like the big bearing housings but used 28 spline shafts. These were found in some F-100s, EBs, and some of the land barges. I guessing this is what you have. Supposedly the axle flanges for these are tough to find since it uses the oddball combo of bolt size in relation to axle diameter.
Third is the "small bearing" housings which used a 11/16" (could be 5/8", not sure) socket on the axle flange nuts. These were pretty much all 28 spline units with the small OD bearing. Mainly found in Mustangs, Cougars, etc..
I hope this helps.
For anyone who knows any better, please feel free to make corrections. Like I said, I'm going off memory here.

Ok so my housing is actually considered a large bearing though? Ill be going with probably a 33spline spool and axles sometime soon and wanted to know what bearings to get to go with them. Thanks for the info. I had read the 3/4" denoted large bearing but they left out the different 28 and 31 versions so thats what screwed me when i bought the bearings.

here is a site on 9" axles.

Thanks for the link kwspony. That's very similar to the site I got my info from.
That's a cool little tidbit about IDing 28 and 31 spline shafts without pulling them.
