So. it's an auto. A freind of mine said it wasn't a C4, so the only other detachable auto bell ford had was the FMX, correct? Or is it a C4? I've never dealt with a C4 before, so I don't have a clue.
It is NOT a C-4 bellhousing. That is without doubt. as to what it is :confused: beats me.... :(
I've never pulled an FMX apart, so no help there. Doesn't look like the old style 2-speed Fordomatics.

Are you sure it's an auto :confused: That 4 bolt pattern looks more like a manual trans would bolt on the back. And as far as I know (which isn't a whole lot :eek: ) the C4 was never offered behind the 351W, the FMX, from what I remember, had a removable bell, was cast iron and had a front and rear pump (I heard it was possible to push start ) and was offered behind the 351C........Hans.....EDIT: You really got me interested now! I've been searching all over the internet and couldn't find one picture! I have found out that they were pretty stout transmissions and that they were put behind several big blocks as well.

Well, it has a flexplate bolted to it, with matching starter.. But I suppose it could be for a manual with the flexplate just thrown on??
This engine has sat (VERY well protected though.. it looks like crap but it's under 1/4" of grease) since the early 70s exactly as it is there.. Told it has less than 1000 miles on it, never rebuilt :D
If it is for a manual tranny then it would have the clutch fork hole on the drivers side. No hole, then it is an auto-bellhousing.
I agree that the tranny bolt pattern on the bellhousing looks wierd.

Yea, duh.. I think I would have caught that.. No, there is no hole in the bellhousing.. Don't think.. I'll double check though.

that is a bell for a 3/4 speed manual. it was obviously put on to turn it over to check compression. that is just a manual bell on a motor that used to have a auto

It does NOT have a hole anywhere for a clutch.. I just checked. The other side has some ribs in it.

I think FMX bellhousing too.
Check this page for an FMX pic:

If you look at the side view pic in the link u2slow gave you can see the tranny to bell bolts. It looks pretty damn close to the pic you linked ImNotRight. FMX gets my vote. But hell, I've never seen one in person either.

FMX cast iron Cruise-O-Matic. Most 351W in the '70's came with these;

The C4 has a round pattern. The pump bolts double as bellhousing attachment.

The C6 has the integral bell. Some have reinforcing ribs, some don't.

That's it! Thanks for the help! It's useless, but at least I know what it is now.
