I know there is lots of information on electronic ignition and I have reserached all the options. I have seen lots of posts for people who have tried the Petronix kit, but I have a 77 2F FJ40 and that won't work. Most favor replacing the distributor with a newr LC or GM type.
I am getting ready to get the Mels kit for $99 and just want to hear from those who bought and installed it as to how they liked it?
I personally would prefer the DUI distributor for $395, but thats a little pricey for me.
Thanks

I have seen several posts on running HEI dizzys.
It seems grinding the HEI base to allow for better gear seating is a necessary mod...
I was wondering If the Toyota gear could simply be mounted further down the HEI shaft?
This way the base could remain untouched to provide better seating.

with the mel's kit that JT Outfitters sells, you don't have to do that. They promise a 15 minute mod. I was leaning towards that solution rather than a DUI Dizzy.
However, I believe if you use the Dizzy sold by man a fre or the one made by performance specifically for the cruiser, I don't think you have to grind. I believe thats only with the GM Dizzy

Nothing to a Mels install. Really, about 15 minutes. If you have a 77 it is the semi electronic type. I have no idea if the Mels will fit or if it will give you any advantage. I would buy an early model vac advance and install the Mels or get a late 40 or 60 series fully electronic. The problem with the latter is that you will be using all used parts and the dizzy does wear over time. My choice would be to buy a new older vac advance and install the mels along with a new OEM coil and ballast resistor. I have had excellent luck with that set up.

The difference between the early FJdizzy and the newer, post 1975, is the design of the top of the center shaft. A pertronix setup will not fit on the 1975 and newer dizzy because there is not ledge on the new shaft to hold the ring with the little magnets that the pertronix's kit uses. Mel's kit is the same as the pertronix with a few mods. If you want to run the pertronix, as I have said here before, get an early fj distributor off an F engine and run it in the 2F engine. I have a pre 69 distributor running in a 1975 2F engine in my 1973 FJ40. I also had a pre 1972 distributor on a 2F that was in my 1975 pig. Both run flawlessly!! Whatever you do, be sure and get the flamthrower coil to go with the pertronix setup. It has the correct resistance so you will not have to run a ballast resistor. Spend the $150 for the pertronix or mel's kit and never, never, never adjust points again.
