whoohooo!!!! after almost selling it, putting it back together and watching it sit next to the garage for another year there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Ok heres the dillo...

85 cj7 laredo... 258 5 spd d300

friend of mine who runs the shop just swapped another 360 into his waggy, he thought the motor was completly blown, but he stripped the gears on the oil pump and the distributor. culprit seems to be whoever had it before him did something witht he dipstick it was out of the block about an 1" that means he has been puttin too much oil in it for a few years. too much is just as bad as too little. anyways he is givin me the motor. he had a guy give him a couple waggy's. both short motors, but good axles and tranny's and tcases.

SOOOOOO here is the plan.

take the 360 rebuild it bigger cam, bore it out, new pistons, yadda yadda yadda high torq basicly. and get this.... FUEL INJECTION BABY!!!!! gonna get my hands on a hi rise intake with a fuel injection kit from a later model 360.

one of the waggy's has a 400 auto in it, im gonna try to get that. if not i gotta figure out waht the others have and if they are usable. john said he thinks one of them has a d20 tcase. if it does im gonna use that and just gear the hell outa it. and flip the 300 from teh cj into my TJ. (always thinkin man always thinkin)

now here is the part i need some help with. ... SUGGESTIONS. things to look for, things to do or not do, just give me some wisdom. i guess the first thing i need to do once i get the engine tcase and tranny together is figure what cradle and stuff. im kinda fuzzy on that.

can you guys point me in the right direction. like writeups, pics, personal accounts.

thanks

well you will need to get the right frame monts for you motor. You can use the ones out of a cj that had a 304 in it. Also if I was you I would try to find a 727 that way you can use your 300 case on the back of it. If you are going to use the wagg axle you will need to out boad you spring here is a web page that show that http://www.dreamwater.com/ironpines/techcenter/outboardsprings/outboardsprings.htm
I would up grade you stock axle for the money you spend on building them up you can buy a lot of other parts and just use d44. I run a 360 with eldb can and intake and that is more than enough power to take me any were and can run cheep gas in it. Just food for thought before you build a big old motor.

HA. if you were told this is a "cheap" swap...it is all a lie! i got my motor free (AMC 360) and found a good TF727 for 600 bucks. AMC motors are about the most expensive to rebuild (in my area) good luck getting one rebuilt for under 900 bucks. ifn it needs rebuilding. i would go with Chevy power if i had to do it over again. Its cheap and has more bang for your buck. they also have a larger aftermarket following. i could have put Chevy power in my jeep for 1/2 what i spent on a 360. if you break on the trail what are the odds of a hillbilly parts store or a buddy having parts to a AMC 360? (you could carry a parts depo with you i guess) I would also go with a mild mill, it will be cheaper and run cooler if you are doing rock crawling any v8 will have more than enough power. as far as the axles go unless you want to go outboard with your springs i would find a Chevy 44 and narrow it (VERY EASY) what’s in the rear? if it is a AMC 20 HD trash that and get a scout 44.

yeah i know where your coming from. Heres the cool thing. we just got done rebuilding johns(shop owner) 360 and he is giving me engine tranny tcase the works and will help me do the work. so basicly im out parts and machine work and straight up my time.

i figure the amc 360 was a strong motor not high hp but torqy. its an excuse to get the project rolling again.

now i just have to figure out if that tcase thats under that wagyy is a 20.

oh as far as axles ive got a pair of waggy 44's and i know where some full width 60's are sittin. so im not worried bout that aspect... right now we just need to get the engine tranny and tcase bolted together and seated in the jeep and be able to turn the key and make it run. then im gonna pull it all out and reubild the motor and such. i just dont want to fool with dealing with dropping all this stuff in at once and having problems when i should be breaking in the cam and such.

thansk

your going to have to come up with another plan for Fuel injection, the AMC V8s never had it from teh factory.

Holley projection (blech)
Howell ( good but $$)
or custom GM TBI setup

it easier to go carb unless you REALLY need FI

that crap posted above about teh amc20 HD being trashed in favor of a scout D44 must be coming from someone who obviously doesnt know dick about FSJs
