I just got a Jeep w/ a 350 Chevy, a 3 speed, and a ??? transfer case.
The 350 is not injected, and has valve covers with the bolt in the center. What engine is it?
All I know about the tranny is that it is a 3 speed. Any ideas?
The transfer case looks fairly small and has the standard shift pattern 4high, 2 high, N, 4 low. Again, any ideas?

I have only had the Jeep for a few hours and have not had time to get under it and really look at things for numbers and distinguishing marks

This should help you identify the tranny .. provided its a GM tranny ... http://www.nastyz28.com/transid.html

The engine could be just about anything from a newer crate with vortecs to just any old 350 that had some FI heads installed on it ..

If the t case is a GM it might be a 205.

If the t/c ic small, it's probably the stock Jeep one.
up through '71 = Dana 18
'72 - '79 = Dana 20
'80 - '86 = Dana 300
Wrangler = NP207 or 231

Get the casting numbers off the back of the block, and the numbers off the heads (under the valve cover). These numbers will tell you what you need to know, check them at www.mortec.com . The heads being center bolt shows they are '87 or newer. The engine is most likely a crate engine.

Well, the transfer case ended up being a Dana 20 mated to a T-150 :( :( 3 speed bolted up to the 350. So, now I have more questions. I like the Dana 20 and from what I have read is fairly strong. But, the transmission is ..... :barf:..... So, I want to put in a new tranny, preferably a 4 speed. Will the NP435 bolt up to the 350 and DANA 20 and how much longer is it than the T150?

Also, I am planning on doing a SOA swap on this Jeep within the next two months. What axles should I run ($$$ is a big issue) if I only plan on going up to a maximum of 36" tire on this Jeep and go wheeling in Tellico. Would Dana 44's holdup. I am running 33s right now and Dont really want Dana 60s with 33" tires. No ground clearence. But, I also want to put axles in now that will work with the 36" tires so that I only have to do this once.
