i am doing a 2wd-4wd swap on my soon to be 89 ranger... it was free, so i am going to play with it... it has a 5sp right now... i want to keep the OD... does anyone know if i can just swap the tailshaft off the 5sp i have right now bolt up a case and call it a day??? if not, am i better off getting a 5sp out of the junk yard, or will a aod bolt up to it?? i am not going to be wheeling it hard, just would like 4wd for the snow around here.. thanks..

don't know about the tailshaft, though I've had the same idea before. As for auto to bolt up then an A4LD will be the easist one to find. the 2.9 has the same bolt pattern as the 2.5, 2.8, and 4.0. ford put the same auto behind all of these enigines however for manuals the 4.0 only got m5r1 while there were mazda and mitsu trannys that were avaliable behind the others and in newer years behind the 2.5, IIRC 93 and newer. I'd see if you can get the tailhousing adapter and swap it out if it works let us know

I would not bother with the a4ld.. I hear tell about many a trans goin to shit with less than 40k on them.. even right after a rebuild.
