I'm putting the detroit & spool in soon, and was curious if I should use a different weight? 75/90w is what I used before. I wasn't sure if the detroit needed anything special? Should I switch to a synthetic?
Thanks

hey-

neither a spool or detroit requires anything special, no additives, etc.

you might want to consider using standard gear oil or a semi-synthetic like Valvoline DuraBlend and changing it frequently. I am not a fan of the high dollar synthetics- at around $100.00+ to fill diff's, t'case's, and tranny, it seems to be $$$$ to me- especially since I change out the fluid ever 7500 miles or so (every third oil change) I have also used Lucas Oil Stabilizer (http://www.lucasoil.com/Product_Information/info10001.htm) to increase the viscocity of the gear oil.

Thanks, I wasn't sure what people used, I've been searching around for a while, but couldn't find any direct info.

I've run regular 80w-90 in my rear diff with a Lockright for 10 months with no problems so far. The LR will go up front after the SAS, and a Detorit will go out back.

I also change my fluids once a month - since I go through a LOT of water, and quite a bit of mud, where I wheel. Even with extended breathers on everything, it's just plain a good idea if you're in mud and water every weekend. So I use the cheapest fluids i can find, since longevity isn't an issue. Advance Autoparts has gear oil dirt cheap around here - I buy it by the gallon, and will probably get a 5 gallon bucket next time.

think about running thick 140w gear oil...the thicker the better with lockers...more heat build up in the diff...thicker keeps it cooler

I heard this before so I asked Gearman and he looked at me and said "What, that is a bunch of BULLSHIT" so I just stick with the recommeded gear oil in Dino form.:D :usa: :D

yeah, the cheap Coastal stuff they sell at advance works really well, seems to smooth everything out....

That is as pure a Dino juice as you can get
