With all the posts about lower gears, I would like to share the approach I am taking with my 45 Truggy project. This past weekend, I finally completed the overhaul and assembly of my doubler setup. Shown below is a pic of my SM465, NP203 and NP205. The NP205 has been modified for twin stick operation and incorporation of an electronic VSS.

The assembly is long -- 37" total, but I doubt many would question its strength.

With 5.89 gears in the diffs, the crawl ratio will be about 155:1 My tires are 42" TSLs

Did I mention this is a real fun project:) :) :)

Looks awesome! Plenty bombproof too...

Where did the adpater for the NP203-Np205 come from? I am thinking of a similar setup with a NP203/NP205 behind my NV4500 in my FJ55 crawler project(a bit down the road, timewise)

That is an Off Road Design, GEN-II adapter.

are you going to use a vortec ??

That is so freaking cool!

I think that is THE option, rether than using a Cruiser T-Case...203/205 is an AWESOME alternative.

Hey man, how much $$$ do you have in adapters? I am very interested in the cost of these only since the other items range so much in price.

I have a total of $1350 invested in all of the gearboxes combined. That figure includes $750 for the ORD 203-205 adapter and $50 for the 465-203 adapter that I purchased from a salvage yard.

In answer to Land Crusher, Yes -- the gear boxes are now sitting behind a 5.7L Vortec:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

OK

37" from Bellhousing to Output Flange?

That is not bad at ALL...I need to see how long my Atlas/465 is...

Come on! 293/465 adapter in the junkyard! That is the most elusive find ever!

I bet the average person will get theirs at AA!

The funny thing was that I found the adapter (in a scrap pile), but never was able to locate a 203 that was originally mated to a 465. I finally gave up and just bought a 10-spline input gear ($40) and swapped that during the rebuild.

That is because they only adapted them in '74 Blazers I think...very elusive!

Did you happen to see how much it would have cost from AA?

IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY /CHECK OUT

www.wagonermachine.com

they got 3.6:1 gears for the 203
that really makes the doubler a crawl box

Jack, where'd you get the 10-spline input gear? I got a new one at Drivetrain Specialists in Las Vegas, but it was well over $40, IIRC.

BTW,
NICE DRIVETRAIN JACK!

Wowee!

Wazzup Morgan? To answer your question, I have a friend who owns a transmission shop and he gives me good deals on parts. I think I really got a good one on the input gear.;)

Not much here.

I look at that drivetrain and "the gears start turning". I start daydreaming about putting an NP205 behind my 203, then going to a rear 14-bolt and front 60, then finding some sort of monstrous diesel to put in front of the SM465, running 38x14.5 swampers, then it just gets ugly. :)

Hm...

I looked FOREVER to find a CHEAP SM465/NP203 adapter and finally ended up getting one for $75 from a tranny shop north of me, Beaverbrook Trans. They were the only shop that seemed to know what I was talking about, and the owner says he does a lot of engine and tranny conversions in 4x4s, if I remember correctly.

It actually scared me when I asked for the adapter and he said, "oh, sure, I've got one". I was thinking, "He'll probably send me a coolant overflow container or something...." Most of the yards I called would say "It's a what? And it goes where? Whaddaya mean transfer case? With bolts? Made of metal? Hmmmm.... Ya don't say."

I got the gear from Drivetrain Direct for $75 or $100 I think, although I have since decided I don't really like doing business with them....

Just when I thought you couldn't possibly top your FJ40, Jack, you drop this drivetrain in front of us...sigh! Looks FANTASTIC, I can't wait to see how your project turns out! Love your shop, too, looks more like an operating room! :)

Joining this BBB has been like a glass of hemlock, just when you think you're perfectly content someone else shares a project that you *must* do to your Cruiser...sigh!
