:mad3: i just bought a jeep cherokee with a "bad tranny" So i got one from a buddies rollover that was a good tranny even after the roll over. I put it in and the damn thing is doing the same fawking thing as before. It is a 87 automatic v6 4.0 that has been rebiult into a high output. The tranny is a automatic "asin" i think. what is happening is it drives great in 1 2 and 3 but in drive it wont kick down or shift up. I think it is something electrical. could someone please list some problems it may be. btw this is my old ladies grocery getter alaska style, 6 inch lift and 33 super swampers, and a good ol system, i drive my nissan hardbody for work and my76 cj with 35s for everything but work. So make fun of the nissan if you will but it saves gas for my cj on the weekends and build ups for the ol ladies cherokee. thanx for any info

The things other than the tranny can cause problems are the transmission control unit (TCU), the throttle position sensor (TPS), or the kick down cable can be out of adjustment. This is pretty simple stuff. Do a search on these items. If you don't find it here, go to www.naxja.org

So you are saying that you can manually shift it into 1-2 and Drive, but it will not shift automatically? If that is correct, I'd say that the TCU is shot.

 No such thing as a V6, it's an inline. 2nd, did the same dumbshit that said your tranny was poached say that they rebuilt the motor to an HO? Hope not, the guy must be a complete idiot. Sometimes, just once in awhile it's a good idea to diagnose a problem before simply replacing parts, especially a transmission. It sounds a lot like a 30 second cable adjustment which is going to make you feel REALLY stupid if that's the problem. There are other sensors that give input to the transmission such as the TPS, but if that were faulty you'd also notice your engine having problems as well. So focus on the cable first.

thanx for the info... and no i wont feel stupid about changing the tranny out because the old one had 200k on it and the newer one is out of a 70k cherokee. Now about the high output.... i was told they rebiult it into a ho... is this not possible?cant bee the deal for 500 dollars though. And i still have a spare tranny, and a set of moc locs for street use.

Take mileage with a big grain of salt, 200k of pampered/well maintained miles or 70k of abused/neglected miles? No what I mean. Anyways, the reason I'd question the "rebuilt to an HO" is for several reasons. First your XJ was a non-HO of course, running a Renix fuel injection system. In 91 when they went to the HO motors, they also changed the FI system, so the electronics of the 2 motors are slightly different. You cannot simply rebuild the old non-HO motor into the HO with the existing parts. The blocks are the same, but they use completely different heads, intake, throttle body and exhaust manifold. Even then it takes some adapting of the fuel rail, TPS on the throttle body, linkage to make it work and you're still using the computer for the Renix system. Look at the throttle body, if the plastic intake hose going to it is attached with 3 screws, it's still a Renix, non-HO. If it slips over top of the TB and is held in place with a plastic clamp, that's a good indication it's at least a HO throttle body.
