Hey,
I had one (91 3.0 BONE STOCK). I don't know what kind of tranny it had but it was a manual. The sincros went on me at 80K. The blue smoke started at about 110K thats when I sold it. The sad part is that I wasn't hard on the truck at all. Look around, how many 91 Monteros do you still see on the road. The COG is high on those, especially if you have one of those giant moon roofs
Just my 2cents

Workrd on a Montero the other day at the shop. It has a 3.5 in it and you would not believe what you have to go thru just to change the spark plugs.
A complete 60k service costs the customer almost 1800. Plugs, wires, timing belt etc. Takes 4-5 hours to change the spark plugs. You have to remove the entire intake manifold and then some. What a piece of engineering wonder. You will never get me to buy one.

My wife drives a 91 LS every day. She loves it. 3.0, loaded with the moon roof (cables seized up though). The 3.0 is easy to work on (basically the same as the Chrysler 3.0). The COG is a little high, but you get used to it and we have NEVER felt unsafe in it. Visibility is good, it is very comfortable and drives nice. The auto trannies and rear ends (some have a limited slip) are bullet proof. The blue smoke mentioned earlier is an easy fix. I would imagine it happened on startup and hung around a while, the would go away, then come back. There is a hose on the pass. side of the motor that goes from the valve cover to the intake. Plumb a plastic fuel filter inline and your problem is solved.
I did cap, rotor, wires and plugs a few weeks ago. The parts cost me about $50 and it took me about an hour to put them in. I am not familiar with the 3.5. It does have a few quirks but it's only significant problem was due to my own ignorance. Where in OR are you? I am in Beaverton and there are a few enthusiasts here.
