My friend has a good 2wd 4L60E he wants to swap in place of the bad 4L60E in his 4x4. Is it just a matter of swapping tailhousings of does the mainshaft need replaced too? Anything to know when attempting this conversion?

Yes it needs a new mainshaft, You'll also lose the VSS off the tail, depending on what transfer case your running you might call Novak as their adapter comes with a new VSS already installed.
