Guys, Anyone do this? I want to tear my down to just the essentials...no key, turn signal, horn or anything but haven't attempted this yet....looks like its doable but doing my homework first....

well, just removing the cover, you can unload the ignition barrel and drive the signal lever pivot pin out.

but full dissasmbly, might need a steering wheel puller ( i did not need one on a few i did) then its just bolts, screws and wiring. You could make up a upper bearing pillow and remove the whole section of the column.

cake, two bananna cause you might need the puller, otherwise a quarter bananna cause it is kind of self explainatory on what to take out, once in it. half hr job if wheel comes off easy.

I assume you have everything wired, and not using the column for anything.

I have taken my column apart a few times. Pretty easy procedure as explained above. I agree that the toughest part is getting the wheel off. If you have a HF near you, you can pick up a SW puller for around $10-15. Otherwise, you can rent one from just about any autoparts store.

As far as eliminating the rest of the parts in the column, I don't see why it couldn't be done, but the best way would be just to take the thing apart and start messing with it.

Edit, actually I think you wil be able to eliminate the key and all the wiring associated with that, but from what I can remember, you will have a hard time eliminating the turn signal and horn. That is pretty much an integral part of the column. There should be a white plastic collar that houses the turn signal mechanism. I think you could remove the turn signal lever, but all the internal would still be there. Also, the horn operates off of an unfixes electrical contact that I don't think you would be able to remove. Especially since the horn buttons for it are incased in the spokes of the wheel. HTH
