I imagine that many people must think this is dumb question, but I'm just curious.

I'm a newby, never had a Jeep before, never have even done any REAL off roading before. Unless driving around a farm is considered real off roading. I have lots of 1/4 mile experience since that's what all my previous toys have been based on. I recently inhereted a 1976 CJ7 with an AMC 258 and a three speed. It's top speed is about 60 mph. I'm really curious about what it would run, hopefully not everyone will think I'm a dork for asking. :D

I'd like to build the Jeep for off road and take it. It looks like it would be lots of fun. Hopefully in the spring I can find some places in the Atlanta area to go to.

Also, what off road race organizations exist? Can anyone point me to an organization and/or web site with classes rules?

Thanks!

There are actually racing organizations...

http://www.jeepspeed.com is a XJ racing organization (downsized Cherokees) - think Baja style stuff

There are also a number of off-road type of races... mud, sand, hill climb and ice

1/4 mile however...

actually, www.jeepsunlimited.com has a speed-freaks (http://forums.jeepsunlimited.com/cgi-bin/ju/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=Speed+Freaks&number=8&DaysPrune=2&LastLogin=) forum, though I think that it's aimed more towards the Grand-Chickerees not CJ's

I had a friend calculate a 1/4 mile ET for my rig, using tire size, gear ratio, and RPM.
He estimated that in low range, 1st gear, and aired down to about 3 psi (which usualy slows my idle down to about 550 rpms), I would run the 1/4 mile in 3 hours and 12 minutes, without ever touching the brakes.

Of course, I would need to deploy the chute at the end to stop:flipoff2:

My mechanic used to race his CJ's in hillclimb and sand drags. He said even on the street he could smoke a lot of cars. He eventually quit because he claims he was winning too much with that Jeep. Unfortunaly he got rid of it before I could get my hands on it.

why not take your jeep out and actually clock it? i thought this board was more hands on than this. :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

another item for thought is to not take a vehicle that rolls on streets for fun with stock tires and try to race it. start with something else. narrow track cj-5s are scary to drive stock, let alone running quarters.

next you should ask what spring wrap is.

I raced my Jeep in the 1/4 mile !

Fawking Jeep won and I was out of breath.

They're faster than you think.

I really think you should review your questions before the post button is pushed.
I did however install a 327 in a 46 2a for a friend and he really got off on pulling wheelys until his 3rd tapered axle d44 broke, and he got one with 4.27s instead of 5.38s and broke the d18.The jeep sold shortly after for less than 1000 bucks.

During Dry Season one year in Panama (Dry Season = No Rain = No Mud = No Wheeling) a bunch of us got bored and took our 4x4's over to run 1/4 mile drags against the locals. It was pretty low budget so there was no clock. There were 7 classes: Stock 4 Cyl, 4 Cyl Modified, 4 Cyl Super Mod, 6 Cyl (Just one 6 cyl class, not enough 6 cyl to run multiple classes), Stock 8 Cyl, Mod 8 Cyl and Super Mod 8 Cyl.

I had a CJ-5 with a 258 T-176/D300 and 4.10's running 31x10.50 BFG MT's. They put me in the "6 Cyl" class. I aired my rear tires down to about 15psi, left my fronts at about 28. There were only 3 other cars in the 6 cyl class with me. A Mazda RX-7, and older I-6 Camaro and a newer V-6 Camaro. I beat both of the Camaros (I think they were both stock) and then lost against the RX-7 (he had mods). We guestimated the 1/4 mile time somewhere in the 15's and my speedo was hitting close to 80 at then end of the Quarter. I was shifting into 3rd gear about 60ft from the start line and shifting to 4th about 3/4ths of the way down the track.

A couple of the other 4x4's had V-8's, and because they were running Headers and aftermarket Intake Manifolds they were classified as "Modified V-8." Of course they were no match for the Modified V-8's in the Camaros, Mustangs and Corvettes that were there. But we guestimated that they were running somewhere in the 14's at getting close to 90 through the traps.

When I came back to the States, I put a 327 SBC in my CJ-5. And that was my daily transportation for awhile. I still remember some kid in a riced out Honda Accord trying to beat me at the light. Funny thing was is that I wasn't even getting "on it." In fact I was just driving and wasn't aware of the Honda until he chirped his tires going into 2nd next to me.

I took my 97 4.0L that had 500km on it and 30inch tires, 3.07's to the track to try it out for fun.

Well seeing how my 5.13's and 3-speed auto dont let me get past 55mph I wouldnt be much of a draggin machine :D My bro's got a bad ass YJ with a 450hp. 383 stroker, mass mods on it. Does the route 66 burnout contest in it every year :D His jeep is by far the fastest car ive been in. I personally dont see the point of a speed demon jeep though, i like mine for slow crawling :D

Ditto. My Jeep starts to get a little scary around 80 or 85... And what's the speed rating on most mud tires anyway... I'd hate to blow a bogger at 90 mph.

*I* don't think it's a dumb question.

Racing Jeeps is FUN! More so when I win and they lose. :D

Check with United (http://www.ufwda.org) and see if your local club is into racing.

In GA I'd expect you'll find more mud-drags than obstacle races..

We usually have 100-yard mud drags and "sand" (dirt) drags. Don't usually run the 4x4 all the way out to the 1/4 mile. :)

You'll see anywhere from 5 to 10 second 100 yard times.

Before I joined the club the "local" (80 miles?) dragstrip invited the 4x4 club out..

We haven't been invited back. :D

One of my buddy's rigs is called "Crazy Horse" - a sub 2,000lbs mud-rail. Mid-engined Alky blown 460 Interceptor, 2spd 'glide, 8k stall converter, open chain single speed t'case.. D44 front, spooled 35sp '60 rear and Bigger Diggers. :D
He put on his drag slicks from his Mustangs and went to the strip..

I don't think he really ran all that hard.. something about being afraid to hang on to it for a full 1/4 mile..

But he DID succeed in leaving a big muddy mess the entire way down the dragstrip. :D

..Might be why our club hasn't been invited back..

http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/mikesbogger/image1.jpg

Check with local clubs. 4x4 drags and obstacle races are a blast.

Also a good way to use up that pile of spare parts you used to have.. :D

So what's wrong with racing a Jeep? Sure it takes a bit more to hold on towards the end, but this sport isn't for wusses :flipoff2:
I built my CJ to go froadin, and to maybe go sand dragging.
Here is a picture I took when I was running a borrowed AMC 360, and had slicks on the rear.
Too bad I blew 4 pistons at the 1/8th mile. Even after that I still ran a 15.3 sec 1/4 mile.

My CJ ran a 14.5...i bet my buddy i could smoke him in my jeep. (he has a 96 Chevy with 350 v-tech) 36's 4.10 (have a "pop"right in the rear...or then i did) and a little 360.

In the future, you may want to put on your nomex suit before posting like this :flipoff2:
Come on, leave the pro street in the past and WHEEL that Jeep.
You won't be disapointed.

If you don't think I go froadin in my CJ, you have another think coming.
It has 35" Boggers for now, but after breaking a lot of crap with my new motor, it has been sitting for a little while. And the motor has been used in other Jeeps.

I plan to built a 454 and pop in in the jeep with proper drive train. It wil be set up for off road crawlin, but i also would like to be able to bring it down to the local strip and show those 4cyl imports that there is no subsitution for raw displacement. Hell I bet with the set up i have in mind I can smoke most cars with 35's on.

And also at the same time be able to take it off road and rock there too

I know alot of guys that build their Jeeps for the Dunes and the Rocks. I don't know how they'd do on the strip, but running in the dunes the way they do, I bet they'd do real well in the 1/4 mile.

3 Jeeps in particular:

An old "flatty" with a twin turbo 400 small block...
A newer CJ-7 with a 454 and Nitrous...
and an older CJ with a Blown SBC...

All of these do extremely well on the rocks as well. The key I think is the very moderate use of the "go" pedal in the rocks.
