Alright, I just came across a 1989 Jeep Wrangler 4x4 with 144,000 miles for $1,890. It looks like it is in really good shape, and runs good, (a foreign exchange student is selling it) What should I be looking for in this vehicle to decide if I should buy it? Or should I just buy it, and sell it again??

I know absolutely nothing about Jeeps, so I would be interested in some info on what a 5spd Wrangler in 89 would come stock with, and if it would be worth my time

Thanks

Misty

Hi Misty,

It depends, the price is not really that great of a deal, but fair for the year and mileage. Let us know if it is a 4 or 6 cylinders, 5 speed or auto. Since you did not mention anything about it, I will assume it is a 4 banger 5speed.

Areas to look for aside from usual areas to look at when buying any car (i.e. leaks, engine header, belts, overall wear and tear, body, steering, brakes, how it shifts, etc)

1- Rear main seal - between rear of engine oil pan and trasnsission - check for leaks
2- Jeeps before 91 are notorious for head gasket leaks on the rear of the engine
3- Frame and undercarriage - check for beat ups, dents, bends.

I think if the jeep is in good shape mechanically and body you can offer $1500 and it would be a nice score with doors, and a soft top.

Good luck!

Thank you :)

I really thought that was a good deal, but I guess not- Ive never really seen one for under $2,000. I will look at all of the stuff you mentioned before I make a decision.

Now the headgasket leaks at the back of the engine, are those visible from looking under the hood or only under the Jeep??

You should be able to look at the engine gaskets by opening the hood. For the rear main seal, you can easily spot by looking from underneath (just bend down by the driver side door), and look at the back of the oil pan. A bit of oil is kinda ok for 140K miles, but it the rear main seal is leking as well, that is a biyt of work to fix up.

To really check the seal, fire the engine up and let it warm up. Shut it off and see if it drips.
