the winch mount is done :D
http://www.s-10crewcab.com/hobie/formulatoy/21305/images/winchplate3.jpg

i plated the sides of the frame with 3/16". for plate support i ran a 2" piece of square tube (1/8") across the frame and also "T'd" into the front of the frame. you can see the heat from the welds on the plate and see how it "T's" foward into the frame. The plate is made out of 3/16" steel and it welded to the lip of the frame in the front and to the lower radiator mount tube in the back. i cut the tabs for the fairlead out of 1/4" and made sure the fairlead isnt sticking out. i didnt want it to get all smashed up on rocks.

27spline chromos from longfield

then i got some manual air switches so i can throw away all that arb crap. then i made a bracket to hold both switces on my gear shift.

then i finally have somewhat of front end on my rig. it used to be just tube and radiator. now it looks like this.

i have put the hood and roof and stuff on and i ran the first 2005 formula toy comp last week.

here is some video of the comp (http://www.s-10crewcab.com/hobie/ftoyjambocomp2005.WMV)

the spotter rope was killer. alot of other teams borrowed it. scott at rockstomper made it and it was high quality. he was there too!

in order to do better at the next comp, i ordered some rock talks from roundeyes.com. bruce is a cool guy and very helpful. this system has the full duplex technnology and i am sure tim and i will do alot better with this system

testerday, brandon (misery) came over to help me install the hydro kit. he just did it himself so he knows whats up. also, brandon is the one that fractured his skull on sledge last wednesday night, then spent a few days in the hospital while we were at the jambo. but he is alright, execpet for the fact he cant hear

so we took the box apart
http://www.s-10crewcab.com/hobie/formulatoy/42905/images/box.jpg

then we drilled the holes

http://www.s-10crewcab.com/hobie/formulatoy/42905/images/drillin.jpg

then brandon tapped the holes

http://www.s-10crewcab.com/hobie/formulatoy/42905/images/brandon.jpg

then taked the ram in and ran the lines

http://www.s-10crewcab.com/hobie/formulatoy/42905/images/hose.jpg

good idea. but what you cant see if that the 90* fitting cant go in right there cuz it is next to box, so it wont be able to turn and thread. scott sends the straight fitting just for this purpose :)

1. Weight - What are your plans for weight reduction ?

2. Booty Fab - Are you passing the crown on ?, I'm thinking you should pass it to someone at the Jambo. Make it a tradition.

3. Visibilty - Pretty Hard to beat what you have now, what are the plans.

4. Paint - I really dig the baby blue and the tan dash. Looks like leather :flipoff2:

na, the hose is fine now.

and yes, visibility. i am going to make it where i can see my front diff, also i had to change the fire wall to cover the bell housing for comp legal reasons. weight: well, my x brace was like 140 wall or something thick and then my floor and fire wall and dash was all 1/8". so it i wont shave much, but a little. mainly, i am just refabbing things to look nicer. i was going to pass on the crown at the last jambo but i got it again for my welding cart:(

we hopefully will pass on the crown next year at the next jambo

So when ya comming back out to my backyard?

soon. i put in the floor today and started mounting my pedals. its looking good. once i finish up the firewall, then i just paint/wire/break lines...and then put it all back in. shouldnt take too long. :D

a2b
11-12-2005, 10:14 PM
well i torched out the tube for the hood. it was too high and i couldnt see that well over the passenger front. then i torched out a tube that was above the main cross tube at the bottom of the winsiled. and i torched out the fire wall and floor. the old ideas just didnt work out.
the new plan is to make things simple, neat, with the idea of making visibility the priority. so there will be no fender wells. there will be a comp leagal firewall. the wall must cover the bell housing and clutch. there must be side panels from the wall to the front shock as welll as a hood. basicaly you have to encompass the motor.
trying to make things symetrical on this buggy were just no practical. with the tcase so high in the frame, the passenger floor just cant be the same as the driver so both sides of the floor and wall are a bit different to make due and use of whats there.
the way that the pedals were mounted, the clutch wasnt able to get full travel and would make it hard to shift.
the resivoiurs were remote and high on the chassis. so wanted to make them local but the steering was in the way. so i had remount the steering and pedals.
i also made motor mounts to keep things alot more steady.
the new hood tubes will just go up and over the motor like most of the other ftoys, they wont be mounted high like they were.

here is the before shots.

a2b
11-12-2005, 10:17 PM

if your springs would allow that much up travel, you'll flex into the frame when the axel is at a real steep angle, when the up travel on the axel is parallel to the ground, you wont hit the frame. you have to flexed.

so for this year i thought i would put a tail light on my rig so i wouldnt get run into in the dust clouds....hopefully....

http://www.thebestbuddies.com/pic/brakelight.jpg

i made the aluminum firewall today and mounted msd and other things to it. there will be side panels that encompass the motor that adjoin to the vertical square tubes.

http://www.thebestbuddies.com/pic/firewall.jpg

i am going to fab a dash up with guages and switches....

this year i decided to make handles for my passengers....they keep complaining about hot having anywhere to hold. so i welded a piece of tube on the right side and then i bent a piece of 1" and welded tabs to it and the bolted it to the tcase.

http://www.thebestbuddies.com/pic/handle.jpg

i made my first bends ever and made my 2 new peices for my hood.

i cant stand the stock airfilter. it was so wide that it got into the way of mounting tubes for the hood and stuff. so i adapted the stock plate to a 6.5" air filter that i got from kragen. i will cut a hole in my sheet metal for filter. so it will poke thru it about 1" up.

http://www.thebestbuddies.com/pic/airfilter.jpg

i have lights now too. we'll see how these work. these are the tractor lights for 12 bucks at kragen. if they arent bright enough, i will put some brighter bulbs in them.

I would hug that motor the best I could to gain the most visibilty

you got to take into account the radiator.

right, but it looks to be 4-5 inches above the radiator, maybe its the pictures, but I would drop it down to just above the very top of the cap and gain all that visibilty

your right matt, i could of gotten it a bit lower. but i didnt want to hug it because i have seen where hood tubes, after a roll over, have been crushed into the buggy or what not, so i want them to have some play so they could move but still not hit the motor. eithery way, i can see over the hood in my seat as it is, so i am alright.

for other ftoy people, its amazing how much more i can see with this setup. my other floor was terrible for visibility. i can see my front diff this way and its completely legal. i love it.

well i got my amp mounted...its a 4 channel 75 per channel watt amp. if i need 2 more speakers i am ready. but for now i will try 2 speakers. i got my speakers from best buy. they are out door speakers and weather resistant. i liked them because that had their own box and hangers. they are not for a car amp but a home amp. with the ohm being different, the speakers are only for 40 watts, so they should be getting 37 watts a pieces so hopefully it should turn out good. if so, i will be blasting eye of the tiger at the first comp to help motivate all yall to try to beat me:laughing:  for todd, i will play anchors away:flipoff2:

http://www.thebestbuddies.com/pic/amp.jpg

got my brake lines done today. i got 2 new master cylinders and ditched the other ones that were for remote resivours. another addition for this year is, i added a line lock to the front wheels. i hope to be able to hold my position better on hills when i need it. and turning the motor off and leaving it in gear is not an option when you are carbed. i also added a chrome brake T. this will make me stop much faster:flipoff2:

Hobie, looing good. I know all about the carb fun.

if those linelocks are similar to the ones I had in my old truck you can't leave them on for too long they get real hot. They work good though when you have to try using all three pedals at once on a hill.

I had a jamar manual lock from polyperformance as well it worked ok but it sometimes to locked up on me when I pushed the brake pedal real hard. I would then have to bleed it it to release.

i just did the exhaust wrap. we'll see if it works good or not. i think it will from what i have heard about it.

and ya i know about the jam lock thing and how it would kind of get stuck. thats why i didnt get that one. i have had good luck all last year with my jegs model. but it was only on the rear. so now i put one on the front.

so i got the dash built with 12voltguy.com switch panel. darin makes a really nice product. i tried to keep the dash in the middle and small. i want to be able to see around it. i put the main power switch on top and easily accesible by me or people outside of the rig on either side, per the rule. a piece of aluminum will cover the back of the dash and be a cover for all the wiring. the fuse box will mount underneath the msd on the firewall. i got the hood fabbed on with a hole cut in the middle so the air filter can stick out the top. i still need to wire everything and run my air lines to my shifter that now sports a hand throttle. i am expecting this hand throttle to really help me out this season. the last comp, i let the engine die as i was at an extreme angle because i was using my 2 feet to switch between first and reverse. i couldnt get back started and i ended up on my lid. if i would of had a hand throttle, i would have been able to keep it running.

j/k

no i am shortening the frame. i never liked how it was longer than the chassis on my rig. i am shortening the wheelbase. and since everyone thinks my ftoy looks like a monster truck, i am raiseing the rear spring hanger and shackle hanger so i can lower the vehilce...and at the next comp, my springs wont have sooo much lift on them:D

i will be mounting the 2 propane tanks behind the seat just like the raffle rig and be making a fully enclosed truck like the raffle rig. i have wanted to do that since i bought the thing 3 years ago. i have to remount what was behind my seat. the arb comp, amp, batt, ammo can. i still havent figured out where everything is going.

overall, i want the make the ftoy look more like a car. i want innerfenders in the rear and some sort of rear panel that looks like i have fenders. i will also try to do a full hood and i am compeletly redoing the front...but that might not be till march. - hobie

okay so i finally got everything ground off.

i got the hendrix motorsports spring hangers. i have had problems in the past with my spring hangers tearing out of the frame.

when i torched them all off, i had tears in the frame from the top to the bottom.

never weld vertical lines to the frame!

so i get the hendrix spring mount and this thing isnt going anywhere. i plated the inside of the frame with 1/8" and with a V at each end.

also, instead of sleeving the frame so i can get to the bolt, i welded the tube to the spring hanger then put the hanger up against the frame and the tube went thru the holes in the frame. then welded it all up including the tube on that is sticking thru the outside of the frame. now the spring hanger is pulling from the outside of the frame therefore making the hanger way way stronger.

i have alot more to do:rolleyes:

man, am i the only one up working on my rig. its just 3am:flipoff2:

well, i took her around the block. i almost burned up my coil wire, but for the first time in a year, I HAVE REAR BRAKES!!!!!

also, how long has my tcase been dry? well i have a bunch of new raddles that i have to figure out. this summer i am going to go thru the front of the rig and fix everything. right now, i am still concentrating on the rear.

so here is what is new on my ftoy for the 2007 season:

1. i got rid of my johnny joints and mounted the new hanger on the back of my crossmember. this help lower the COG of my rig some and i lined it up where the shackle when fully drooped, would hit the crossmember using it as stop. that way, hopefully i wont brake any leaves backing into rocks on courses...also, well....nevermind.

so before i got back from vegas, i stopped off at dalton fabrication to hook me up with some propane mounts. just like the ones on the raffle rig. those tanks in the picture are the fiberglass tanks that are somewhat see thru, so you can see the level of propane in them. that setup really utilizes the space on the rear of the ftoy. jerry also put in a seat belt bar behind my seats. i had my shoulder belts mounted to the floor and since that is wrong to do, jerry fixed it for me. for those of you who want a turn key rig or a number of projects knocked out on your rig for you to save you some time, i suggest using dalton. jerry does top notch work :)

i have to honestly say. the trail gear 5" springs work way better than all the other springs i have ran. i think its because the front springs are a bit longer than the rest of the competitors springs. they just seem to work so great. i was just looking at this picture, and i used to never ever be able to flex like that. if you havent gotten springs, TG 5" have proven themselves.

Since Alpine has use of the #10 rig for the 2008 season we felt it necessary to further attempt to un-bootyfab it.

We started by cutting out the steering system. I don't like heim joint steering to start with and this one had beveloped some flex to it. We built a cro-mo column and made delrin bushings for the top and bottom. I added a dished cheapo wheel to replace the bent circle track wheel. No more flex and the wheel is better positioned for me.

Next was the driver's seat mount. It is much better now and has 2 different mounting positions and another could be added. It also has pins and clips now for easy reremoval. I would advise anyone building to spend a lot of time on seat mounts during the initial build as it will make things much easier later.

I liked the idea of the exhaust running into the framerail but the back pressure proved to high and the rig did poorly on the top end. We fabbed a new system that crosses over under the rear driveline and exits just in front of the right rear tire. We wrapped it with exhaust wrap to cut down on heat and made a heat shield for the muffler. While we were at it we made a stronger and easier to remove guard for the u-joint and driveshaft.

After 1 ride the track bar mount fell off:eek: May have had something to do with a motocross track at Flat Nasty in MO?? So we beefed it up and remounted it. A Trail Gear rear housing may be in the works??!!:D

The tranny makes sounds like a rod knocking that scares all the spectators within 1/2 mile of any trail that you're on so another one is one the way.

I had no trouble getting comfortable driving this rig. To look at it you would think that it sits high and would be a little unstable but that's far from the case. I REALLY like the ARBs. Let me repeat, I REALLY like the ARBs. Spend the money and get them from the start. This rig will ride off camber with almost any rig out there. I will be adding a rear winch and connecting the front winch to the front housing to make off camber even better. I also like the turning radius since it will turn inside my rig. It is 4-5" shorter than the 48 rig but that's not all. The front end turns sharper. I will change the 48 to turn this well by shortening the whelbase and working on the front axle. Don't ask me what it takes to make yours turn like this. That's my secret:flipoff2:

I'll continue to update this thread throughout the season as other repairs or changes are made.

Big thanks to Hobie and Matt at Trail Gear for making this rig available to us. It will make the East coast F-Toy series that much better and i'm enjoying beating on someelse's rig.:D

nice patch work on the housing. it looks beefy. too bad those stock housings are so thin. i doubt we'll the same problems since the TG housing is way thicker.
