okay,,,,,, so i started over. here's the old build thread (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=217569) after the jambo i went and got a STRAIGHT frame from jca. thanks for the hook up jc! its an IFS frame with loads of brackets and what not on it still...

http://www.thebestbuddies.com/pic/frame.jpg

so the last 2 weeks (with the help of dave (cragrat)) i have cut off and ground down and welded up all the holes, i am going to sand blast it and then paint it....i also learned that my welder was smitten with problems and thats why i could never get a good weld....now i am a pro :D

http://www.thebestbuddies.com/pic/frameclean.jpg

http://www.thebestbuddies.com/pic/lepor.jpg

dave came over today and we put the frame and motor on my trailer. i am going to continue to build it there so it will be mobile. saturday i am taking it to his house and we are going to fab up the motor mounts and tcase crossmember....

http://www.thebestbuddies.com/pic/trailer.jpg

even though i started over i am glad i did what i did cuz i learned alot and now i can do it right espicially since dave is officially on my team!!! and is pretty much leading the project..thanks Dave!!!

Your old project wasn't that bad - was it??? Granted you got a little side tracked on that peddle assembly but you took care of that.

You might be careful on how many rigs you try building although you have a long ways to get to BoogerWeldz record......

BAWAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHHAHAHAHA Thats too funny....I didn't realize it was that bad. Sorry bud, but I was at the Jambo, and was wondering what the hype was about. I don't know how I missed that :D

Wish ya luck in the future  and P.S. don't weld on painted, oily, or contaminated surfaces, not matter how quick you need to finish. Its just going to jeopardize your safety in the long run ;)

For the record ...
Booty Fab and repairs...
1. Bent frame ... passenger rail was 1" higher than the other. (replaced the frame with a IFS frame from JCA, all brackets have now been removed and all the holes have been welded up and ground down for that "clean shaven" look)
2. Welding ... Proper assembly of the welder would have helped. If you can see "O" rings at the connection point, that is not good. (Repaired) I made him practice on some scrap before touching the frame. The welds that were made before the welder repair where basically without gas, no penetration and would have failed.
3. Pedal assembly ... Using the stock pedal assembly could have worked but removing the pedals from the cowl section would have been a good idea. (A Bling-Bling pedal assembly has been purchased and will be installed properly)
4. Transfer case mount welded to the belly pan ... :barf: A new transfer case mount and motor mounts will be fabbed up 5-15-04 moving the engine assembly back 8" and down 1".

I will help and guide him in his quest to be a "Formula Toy Player"
but, I will not build the rig for him.

so last sat. i took the rig to dave's house and we had a blast. there was about 5 of us there and i had some cool pics, even a pic of a 1/10th scale rc rock crawler, but the camera was jacked and none of the pics came out.

we built the motor mounts out of 2" tube and just welded the end to the stock plate. we moved the motor back 8" exactly and down only about 3/8". this is an ifs frame thats why the motor mounts look high up off the frame.

dave also fabbed up the cross member to hold the transfercase. its 1/4" steel and it sits flush in the side of the frame and doesnt hang out the top or bottom. it bolts into the side. we will run a flat skid plate underneath the belly.

evertyhing is just tacked in...it needs to be full on welded and cleaned and painted. once i get everything together i am going to have the whole thing sand blasted and then we will finish the welds and paint it.

as you can see in the pics, i actually have a straght front cross member :D

i got my prp seats today. as you can see they are a tight fit. with tcase being that high, my passenger side might need to sit right behind the tcase. this may only work for me. i am the only formula that i know of that has this tranny. i have the L-52 tranny which is 6" shorter than the w-56, g-52, etc...so being back 8" with the short tranny, i have perfect front and rear drive angles. and i dont have to slap my pass seat right on top of the front output.

But for sentimentaility points your shoulda just welded the OEM crossmember in there crooked so it matched the pedal assembly. :flipoff2:

It's good to see that it's coming along better and faster than the last attempt. It took me about 2 minutes to rip off that peddal assy on the last one. At least we know the welds on this one are going to hold up better. and with dave helping him every thing will at least be straight but Iwouldn't be gettin to eager to pass of that crown hobie has alot of work to do on that thing and if nobody is thare to guide him at the time who knows what could happen  :D

thats cuz i just got finished making the motor sound, then i made the stall sound and then the engine quit on me during the steep incline. dont you notice the steep angle that the buggy is at :D

steve, it will be tough to make by aug 20th. just depends how smoothly things go together. i will be there either way, hopefully with a running buggy.

and dont worry, by the end of this, i feel confident that i can pass the crown off to a worthy candidate.

a friend came over today and took some pics with his camera. mine sucks so these pics came out way better than the ones i tried to take. the motor mount is just tacked in right now. i will finish welding it when we get to that point. you can see our own fabbed up crossmember that is flush with the top and bottom of the frame. and the rear hanger is an all pro rear hanger, then we added the top peice to inboard and then we just have to put in the sides of the hanger that we will plasma cut a shape that will give the hanger its support that it needs. it should look nice! the hanger sits almost as narrows as the front springs and its tucked up all the way to the frame.

so i finally welded up the last hole on the frame :) man, that took forever...cut off everybracket, grind them down, then weldup every single hole and then grind it down and then flap it......sheeeesh.....

i also just tracked down my hubs and rotors. i sent them to mike for the official "hendrix hub mod". i had him drill my rotors as well. now i will make this thing a roller saturday.

okay so the rig stand 6'5" tall at the top of the chassis. right now it has 28" of ground clearence. i figure once the springs settle and another 1000 lbs are added, it will sit lower and everything should balance out...

well actually, the other way the will rub when the spring droops. they look like they will rub on the inside frame foward of the shackle. thats why we turned them around....

does it matter which way the shackles are turned??

No, not on your frame. I needed 'banana' shackles on my truck to keep from hitting the body mount when the spring compressed. You no longer have that body mount, so it doesn't matter which way they're mounted. ;)

Looking good! AND better than the last build!

I'm been meaning to ask this for a while now... When the rules say the chassis must be supplied by an approved vendor does that also mean that no modifications can be done to it? If I built a Formula Toy I would probably have to shorten up the lower side bars, behind the front tire and in front of the rear tire to allow for a bit shorter wheelbase but that would take some major tweaking. Okay I'm getting sidetracked.....I see that you cut the front hoop off. Is that LEGAL by the Formula rules??? And if it is, what chassis mods are legal?

camo
06-17-2004, 11:06 AM
That bar is a optional when you order your chassis...so you don't have to keep it

4RnrRick
06-17-2004, 01:56 PM
Thanks Camo....... So other than that, am I correct is saying you can NOT modify, tweak, remove or change the chassis in any other way? Could a formula guy bend the hood portion of the chassis down legally? (like what Wilson did) Just curious on whats legal to do and still being able to pass tech..... If I'm gettting out in NeverNeverLand - just tell me to go fly a kite or PM me because I don't want to hijack the thread to much.....

Looking good! .....If I built a Formula Toy I would probably have to shorten up the lower side bars, behind the front tire and in front of the rear tire to allow for a bit shorter wheelbase

thanks. luckily i have made some friends :D we had 4 guys at the house that day working on it. thanks guys!!!!

but as far as making the wheelbase shorter, that is kind of tough cuz you lose your approach and departure angles. then if you move the motor back but want to move your rear axel up, that makes your rear drive shaft angle worse. with 38's i measure 106" would be the shortest i could go without hitting the chassis. right now i have stock sized springs, but i want some springs that move the axel foward, once i get those i think my wheelbase will be like 109" or close to it. i put a 1" spacer relocation plate on the front so my wheelbase is now 107". these 56" rear springs are pretty long. i could defintely see how some 51's will help the departure angle.
just to get the 56's on, the frame sticks out that back farther than the chassis.
see.

and i think i might have to move the shackle mount back another inch cuz there is no weight on it right now and my shackle angle is already at 30*

well i got my one wheel to finally stop leaking. i took a tube of silicone 2 that i got from the depot. then smeared a thick layer over the bead around the wheel. then waited 24hr and then did it again. then waited 24hr and then aired it up. and then waited another 24hr and the wheel didnt lose any aire during that time, and the biggest difference is that you actually dont hear air coming out of it after youved air it up.

BTW 32 bolts for the rockstomper beadlocks is alot of freaking bolts to tighten. i have takent that wheel apart sooo many times now, i hope i dont ever have to do it again for a long while

here is what we got done sat. we got the seats mounted, the chassis officially mounted and started the pedals. we used 1" tube .120 wall for the seats and the fire wall and pedal mounts. we still have to run some more tube for the seats and definetly for the pedals. there is another mount on the pedals right behind the frirst mount. the plan is to run tube from those to the sides where i drew the red lines. and also continue the tube straight down from the top as well from the first mount. my seats are rocked back a bit to make it more comfortable and to help get those legs up to push the pedals.

FYI: the seats are prp and are 22" wide according to their site. the front is rocked back a few inches and the rear tabs sit on top of the frame rail. with the L-52 tranny the seats clear about 1/4" from the tcase but the seats are shuved up against and touching the hendrix chassis. the seats could not be mounted any lower, thats another good reason to rock the seats back. they wont fit in there totally flat on top of the frame.

BTW my wheelbase is 108.5"

anywho....

here are some highlights that we were able to get (http://www.s-10crewcab.com/hobie/firstwheelintrip.WMV)

i ran slege for the rig's first run...i ran the last half of it with no lights in the dark..then got lost on the way back to camp....those bomb craters filled with water sure do come up on you fast with no headlights  the next day i ran aftershock and didnt have any trouble with that either. sunday morning, i went over to back door, but my tires just werent stickin it and i didnt really feel like laying the hammer down any more than i had to....so i just backed off and luckily didnt go over, but my passenger had a good view

I saw him and tried to slow down to stop, but didnt want to take out the car next to me (I rarely tow a trailer, so I was taking it easy, expecally since it wasnt my rig). We had just gotten out of traffic and there was a ton going the other way. I figured about 30 min to get back to you guys. the dash is temp for right now. i plan on running a tube across the chassis and makeing a dash that goes from side to side and putting a OS handle on the passenger side off of that tube...cuz right now they have nothing to hold onto..

and about the high comment. the bar that runs across the top is where my line of site it with the front of the chassis so it doesnt impair my vision. i plan on running my hood to there and being able to clear the motor...but i am not going to fab it up till i hear about what exactly "full hood" means.. you need to see down the driver side, so if i run my hood all the way to the side of that upper tube thats on my buggy right now, i wont be able to see. so if i have to make a full hood, then i will take the tube by the driver and make it swing down to the chassis so it doesnt block my site

well i have been out of town for 2 months. now i am back and i started working on the F-toy again. for my chrsitmas gift to myself, i bought a plasma cutter. the hypertherm powermax 380. it made a huge difference today. i got things done much much faster.

so i finished up the flat pan for the belly. its 40" by 50". 3/16" steel and wieghs 85lbs. i have wheeled with it and its working well. it protects all my fuel, brake lines, exuast and wiring, battery tray....and it can still support the buggy with the help of the crossmembers. it is completely flush on the bottom so there are no rock anchors.
http://www.s-10crewcab.com/hobie/formulatoy/12505/images/flatbellydown.jpg
http://www.s-10crewcab.com/hobie/formulatoy/12505/images/flatbellyup.jpg

also, the little peices of tube that connect the hendrix chassis to the toy frame were getting hung up on things. i had attached them to the bottom of the frame and it turned out not to be the best design. so i cut them out and put in another piece that attaches at the top of the frame. here you can see the difference in the pics. i gained alot of clearence.

a2b
01-25-2005, 04:48 PM
chris, there isnt a rule on plating the sides. i know of one F-toy that has done it. but he doesnt post any pics of his rig. i dont plan on doing it cuz of the extra weight that it would involve

how much weight do you think it would add?

wondering if the extra weight (which I'd guess isn't all that much) would be worth having a smoother surface at the rockers.

a2b
01-25-2005, 07:40 PM
how much weight do you think it would add?

wondering if the extra weight (which I'd guess isn't all that much) would be worth having a smoother surface at the rockers.

dont know but it would have to be thick enough to do any good. i figure if it becomes a problem, then plate the sides. i dont think todd or lisa plated theirs, so it must not be a big problem if they are mounted like i have them now which is like theirs

a2b
01-26-2005, 07:41 PM
so today i worked on the gas tank position. i dont know how many gallons it holds, but it is alot. the one in todd's and lisa's rig, isnt as big as my stock tank. anyways, so that much weight mounted that high cant be a good thing for COG. so i lowered it 5" and moved it foward.

before:
http://www.s-10crewcab.com/hobie/formulatoy/12605/images/gastankbefore1.jpg

after:
http://www.s-10crewcab.com/hobie/formulatoy/12605/images/gastankafter1.jpg

also, my rear shackle angle settled to a solid 55 degrees and the shackles would over extend and get stuck. so i had to move the JJ back 2". they used to be flush with the rear square tube, but now i needed more surface to weld to. so i put some square tubbing back there at the joint. i will plate the sides tommorrow. i am shooting for around a 20 degree shackle angle.

http://www.s-10crewcab.com/hobie/formulatoy/12605/images/jj2.jpg

i took some advice on the degree thing. we'll see if it pays off

a2b
01-28-2005, 12:58 AM
so today i plated the mounts. unfortunately, one of the perches was mounted .5" off from the other, so my jonny joints are a full 1" off in the back. i was wondering my driver side spring was crooked. so this time i mounted the JJ so it wouldnt be crooked sitting there.

http://www.s-10crewcab.com/hobie/formulatoy/12705/images/jjplated2.jpg

the better part of the day was spent on the steering box. in the stock position my steering colided cuz the box was back too far. so i was using a relocator to move the axel back one inch to help.
so i need to move the steering foward so i could move my axel foward for better approach angle. i had to cut out the front tube. i will have to come up with another way of attaching the hendrix chassis to the frame in the front. so i plated the sides with 3/16" and sleeved the holes. in all i moved it 3.5" foward. now i can move my axel foward 3". i have to order new springs cuz my shackle angle in the front is about 10 degrees. i have no flex in the front at all. its like wheeling an IFS rig
the new deavers and all pros are longer and should work with where my shackle hole is in the frame. plus, those springs move the axel foward unlike my old alcans that i have now.

so today i sat the fan in. it barely fits. it says it does 2300 CFM. during the winter the stock fan (no shrowd) was having a time keeping the engine cool. i hope this setup works. i also started working on the front. first i had to redo the tubes since i moved the steering box foward.

next is winch, stinger, lights, grill....etc...

todd, what temp was yours running at in the summer?

mine was running sometimes at 220 during last fall when it was 60 degrees out. it usually was fine but sometimes heated up, so i figured that when it got really hot, i would have problems. thats why i switced. but also my radiator is about 3" away from my fan. mabey yours is closer?
i would prefer not to switch and just leave it alone and work on other stuff.

Hobie I am pretty sure mine runs between 180-200 all year long. I know it does not over heat. Mine is set up like Todd's.

well in order to comply to calrocs rules. you have to have something to cover the tranny and cover the output shaft...so i built a tunnel. also i made a dashplate that can bolt in and out as i update it with guages and radios and what not. i still need to do the finish paint and some odd and end stuff. but i have the basics in. i just need to make them purty.

here is the old interior

here is the new interior. tunnel and dash. i think it looks alot better. the tunnel is held in with bolts. so i can take the whole thing out if i need to. i still have to plate down my rubber boots. i didnt run the dash all the way across becuase when strapped into the seat, you need that corner open to see the driver front tire.

180 was what I have mine set at, but I have a custom 16" square 4-core and it hasn't hardly gone above that even on the hottest day.

Not that my vote matters, but with the improvents you've made in your fab work I think you would have to be allowed to give it up. :cool2:
